A light that cannot be measured is at once the atom and the undivided whole. Marked within as its own quality and looked at, it is release. What they do instead is count fingers to a little clicking sound, inside a daze they cannot come back from. Want of resolve is why the puja goes on. The click is the sound of not looking.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar celebrates the paradox of the Absolute: subtler than the subatomic particle yet encompassing the infinite cosmos—an immeasurable, radiant Light beyond conception. Rather than seeking this mystery through intellectual debate, the seeker is urged to recognize this peerless splendour within the subtle chamber of the self. By merging individual consciousness with this incomparable effulgence in unbroken non-dual union, the cycle of mortality is severed forever. The seeker transcends the grim fate of the physical body as a rotting corpse (பிணம்) and escapes the revolving wheel of birth and death, stepping into timeless immortality.

Verse 478

They stand worn out crying spit, spit, as if saliva were the whole of impurity. The pure body, the song says, came to be as that spit; the packed துச்சில் reads, against எச்சில், as the spit of a hut. Honey that was stored is spit, the flower is the bee's spit, and milk drawn with the teat in the hand is spit. The gloss names சுதா as the cow's teat. What they shrink from is what they take in.

The teaching

In a tour de force of biological insight and social satire, Sivavakkiyar completely demolishes the orthodox obsession with ritual defilement (எச்சில்). Caste purists shrink in horror from saliva and bodily contact, yet the Siddha exposes that their entire world of worship is constructed of saliva. Honey offered to the gods is the regurgitated spit of bees; fresh blossoms picked for the altar are already tasted and soiled by insects; and consecrated cow's milk used for holy bathing is drawn from teats licked by nursing calves. Even the human body itself originates from visceral biological fluids. By showing that nature itself operates through these sacred secretions, Sivavakkiyar shatters artificial notions of pollution, revealing that true purity is purely an inward spiritual state.

Verse 479

They run, saying holy water, linga, and image, and that running is called evil. Holy water and linga are then told to clarify the life in which they stand inside. If the two can be seen clearly within, they do not remain a destination. What stands foremost is Sivayam. The same pair of words opens every line, and each time the address moves inward.

The teaching

Orthodox Hinduism revolves around the holy triad of sacred waters (teertha), enshrined emblems (linga), and anthropomorphic idols (murti). Sivavakkiyar rebukes those who run after these external shrines as spiritually perverse (தீதர்), because they seek outside what is throbbing within their own breath. The ultimate holy river and the true, uncarved Linga is the indwelling life-force (jiva) animating the physical frame. When the seeker turns within and clearly beholds this inner sanctuary, the external paraphernalia of temples falls away. The living soul itself is recognized as the supreme Linga, shining forth as the triumphant glory of Sivayanama.

Verse 480

  4. 4Podudharppa puusaienna puusaienna puusaiyo?

Someone takes a goat, divides it into shares, and sits: that is the likeness. Copper being hunted is spread until it lies firm. The Lord being hunted is already within us, stated as a fact in force. Thrown darbha grass is asked, three times, what sort of puja it is. Sacrifice, metal, and ritual grass stand beside a Lord who did not need the errand.

The teaching

With biting sarcasm, Sivavakkiyar exposes the commercialization and cruelty of temple priesthoods. He compares ritualistic priests to butchers who carve up a sacrificial goat into profitable meat portions and settle down comfortably to collect their spoils. These ritualists spread out copper plates, coins, and yantras with calculating precision, demanding fees while tossing blades of dried darbha grass into sacrificial fires. Sivavakkiyar fiercely asks: While the supreme Master of the universe dwells vibrantly within our own hearts, what possible meaning can there be in tossing dried grass and waving copper utensils? True adoration is internal communion, not mercantile superstition.

Verse 481

This song asks, and does not scold. The Lord is the one who does not forget the singer even for a scrap of time: the Sole One, whom the gloss calls the single foremost, God, king of kings of kings. The singer asks whether he can stay apart for even that scrap. The help he wants is the Lord's name, set on his tongue.

The teaching

Amidst his scathing critiques of external religion, Sivavakkiyar reveals the tender, unshakeable bedrock of his personal devotion. The relationship between the Siddha and the inner Lord is one of continuous, reciprocal remembrance: the divine Presence never abandons the seeker even for the fraction of a heartbeat, and the awakened mystic cannot endure a single breath devoid of divine awareness. This is not ritualistic chanting, but an intimate plea for grace. Sivavakkiyar asks the indwelling Lord to govern his entire existence and to let the sacred vibration of the Divine effortlessly inhabit his tongue at every moment.

Verse 482

  3. 3Nallainpam monasaaga raththilee azhuththiyee
  4. 4Naadonaadha amirdhamundu naanazhindhu ninranaal.

A light with no border stands so as to burn as the One. The mighty radiance, printed with a break inside the word for fullness, becomes the single bliss of austerity. Good joy is pressed into letters spaced as an ocean of silence. The song ends on a day: the day this singer drank nectar no search can find, and stood destroyed.

The teaching

This verse is a sublime confession of mystical union (Samadhi). Sivavakkiyar describes the momentous day when the boundless cosmic Light blazed forth as a singular, undivided flame, consuming all sense of duality. The mighty, full radiance of divine consciousness became the seeker's own state of ecstatic absorption. Plunged deeply into the boundless 'Ocean of Silence' (மோன சாகரம்), the mystic drank the ungraspable nectar of immortality that no external intellectual search can ever reach. In that supreme downpour of grace, the illusory 'I' (the separate ego) was completely annihilated, leaving only the eternal, shining Reality.
