Verse 144

  1. 1அம்மைஅப்பன் உப்புநீர் அறிந்ததே அறிகிலீர்;

  2. 2Ammaiappan uppuniir ariayan aranumaay
  3. 3Ammaiappan uppuniir aadhiyaadhi aanapin
  4. 4Ammaiappan ninnaianri yaarumillai aanadhee.

Mother, father, and salt water are repeated until they become the whole theology. You do not know what is known. Those three stand as Hari, Ayan, and Hara. After they have become the first beginning, mother and father resolve into you: except you, there is no one.

The teaching

The ultimate resolution of cosmic parenthood into the non-dual Self. Humanity is mesmerized by the trinity of Father, Mother, and the primordial waters (the cosmic elements and the amniotic fluids of birth), worshipping them through the mythological forms of Brahma (Ayan), Vishnu (Hari), and Shiva (Hara). Sivavakkiyar pierces through this theological tapestry to unveil the ultimate non-dual truth: when the source of all beginnings is traced back to its pristine essence, the divine Mother and Father are realized not as external entities, but as the seeker's own True Self. In the grand awakening of Advaita, there is no other: "Except for You, there is no one else."

Verse 145

  1. 1Uruththarippa tharkumun udalgalandhadhu engnganee?
  2. 2Karuththarippa tharkumun kaaranangal engnganee?
  3. 3Poruththivaiththa podhamum porundhumaaradhu engnganee?
  4. 4Kuruththiruththi vaiththasol kuriththunarndhu kollumee!

Three questions ask how anything could be arranged before it exists. Before form is taken up, how did the body mingle? Before conception is taken up, how are the causes? And the teaching that was set to agree, how does it fit? The answer is not another theory. Aim at the word the guru corrected and set, and grasp it.

The teaching

Metaphysical cosmogony, the mystery of embodiment, and the supreme authority of the Guru's word. How did the formless spirit coalesce into flesh and bone before physical birth? What primordial karmic causes orchestrated conception within the dark womb? And how does conscious awareness (போதம்) come to inhabit this mortal frame? Sivavakkiyar warns that dry intellectual speculation and philosophical debate can never unravel the mystery of existence. The only path to resolving this cosmic riddle is to silence mental chatter and deeply meditate upon the living, transformative instruction (குருத்திருத்தி வைத்த சொல்) bestowed by the enlightened Satguru.

Verse 146

  2. 2சோதிஉண்டு சொல்லுமில்லை சொல்லிறந்த தேதுமில்;
  1. 1Aadhiundu andhamillai anrunaalu veedham il.
  2. 2Sodhiundu sollumillai sollirandha theedhumil;
  3. 3Aadhiyaana muuvaril amarndhirundha vaayuvum
  4. 4Aadhianru thannaiyum yaararivadhu annalee?

There is a beginning and there is no end, and on that day the four Vedas are not. There is light and there is no speech, and there is nothing that has passed beyond the word. Among the three who are the beginning, wind sat. On the day of the beginning, the Lord is asked who knows even oneself.

The teaching

The primordial, pre-cosmic silence that precedes scriptures, language, and the gods. In the beginningless origin, only the self-luminous, infinite Radiance (சோதி) existed—boundless, eternal, and entirely devoid of beginning or end. On that primal day, the four Vedas had not been composed, no mythological speech had been uttered, and the sectarian gods of the Trinity had not yet taken form; only the subtle, primordial breath (வாயு) moved through the void. Sivavakkiyar addresses the Supreme Lord with a profound mystical paradox: in that pristine state of undifferentiated consciousness, who was there to know their own Self?

Verse 147

  1. 1Pulaal pulaal pulaal adhenru peedhamaigal peesugiriir?
  2. 2Pulaalaivittu embiraan pirindhirundhadhu engnganee?
  3. 3Pulaalumaayp pidhatrumaay peerulaavum thaanumaayp
  4. 4Pulaalilee mulaiththezhundha piththangaanum aththanee!

Follies keep saying flesh, flesh, flesh. The song asks how our Lord could have stayed apart after leaving flesh. He is flesh, he is babbling, he is fame roaming, he is himself. Look, father: the madman sprouted up in the flesh. The last address is compressed and can also be heard as the father the madman sees.

The teaching

A revolutionary Siddha proclamation on the divinity of human flesh. Orthodox asceticism and religious puritanism routinely condemn the physical body as foul, corrupt meat (புலால்), advocating self-loathing and denial. Sivavakkiyar fiercely denounces this dualistic folly: if Shiva is truly the omnipresent ground of all being, how could He ever be separate from physical flesh? God Himself is the flesh, He is the spontaneous speech, He is the wandering fame, and He is the divine spark. The Lord is the eccentric Divine Madman (பித்தன்) who has sprouted and blossomed right inside this very flesh—revealing that the physical body is the living temple of the Divine.

Verse 148

  1. 1Udhiramaana paalgudiththu okkaniir valarndhadhum
  2. 2Idharamaay irundhadhuonru irandupattadhu ennalaam
  3. 3Madhiramaaga vittadheedhu maangisappulaal adhen?
  4. 4Sadhiramaay valarndhadheedhu saivaraana muudaree?

You grew alike by drinking milk that is blood. One that stood as other can be said to have split in two. Then the Saiva fools are asked what was let go as wine, what the compressed மாங்கிசப்புலால் of flesh is, and what grew in the uncertain form சதிரம். The verse keeps the questions on the body they all grew.

The teaching

The unmasking of dietary and caste hypocrisies within religious orthodoxy. Sivavakkiyar takes orthodox Saivites to task for their self-righteous obsession with ritual purity and vegetarianism. He reminds them of a universal biological fact: every single human infant grew and flourished by drinking mother's milk, which is nothing other than transformed maternal blood (உதிரம்). The fundamental unity of human biology was artificially divided into high and low through social prejudice. By interrogating why they condemn flesh and wine while forgetting that their own physical form blossomed from transformed blood, the Siddha shatters the haughty pretensions of religious orthodoxy.

Verse 149

  1. 1உண்டகல்லை எச்சில் என்று உள்ளெறிந்து போடுகிறீர்;
  1. 1Undagallai echchil enru ullerindhu podugiriir;
  2. 2Kandaechchil kaiyalo paramanukkum veeradho?
  3. 3Kandaechchil keeladaa, kalandhapaani appilee
  4. 4Kondasuththam eedhadaa? kurippilaadha muudaree!

You fling away the eaten lump, calling it எச்சில், saliva-pollution. Is the saliva you see a matter of the hand, the compressed கையலோ, or is it something other even than the Supreme? Listen: in the mixed morsel in the palm, what purity was taken? The name for the hearer is a fool with no aim.

The teaching

The demolition of obsessive ritual taboos regarding saliva and food defilement (எச்சில்). Orthodox ritualism is plagued by phobias of saliva contamination, casting away eaten morsels and constantly performing outer ablutions. Sivavakkiyar exposes the absurdity of this externalized purity: can saliva, or any substance in creation, ever be separate from the all-pervading Supreme Lord? Furthermore, in the biological reality of digestion, food is naturally mixed with moisture in the hand and mouth to sustain life. True purity is not achieved through superficial washings, but by purifying the inner mind and recognizing that the entire phenomenal universe is permeated by the single, indivisible Divine Presence.
