The eyes are lowered and gathered, and all the letters, blocked, depart. Where this happens is called the open space that is the house of a magic already ripened. In the hour of undergoing, pressing leaves the mind reeling. The last line stacks three claims side by side: he is, I am absent, and no one is. That, the song says, is what came to be.

The teaching

Here Sivavakkiyar describes the experiential pinnacle of Nirvikalpa Samadhi, where the external senses and mental faculties collapse into transcendental absorption. When the yogi's physical gaze converges inward (கண்குவித்த போது) in the meditative stance of Shambhavi Mudra, all verbal concepts, mantras, and letters dissolve into stillness. The phenomenal universe is seen for what it truly is: an elaborate magical illusion (இந்திரசாலம்) unfolded in the open space of consciousness. In that sacred hour of divine communion, as discursive intellect reels and vanishes, the ultimate non-dual realization dawns: "He alone is, I am not, and no separate entity exists" (அவனுமுண்டு நானுமில்லை யாருமில்லை ஆனதே).

Running after good bathing places is the action under rebuke. The next line relocates them. Good baths exist, and the Lord exists, within us. What follows is a bath at the limit and the one worship. If that is done, the life that moves in Tillai will dance inside the state of Siva. The song keeps Tillai's name and moves the dance to the inner state.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar chides pilgrims who exhaust themselves running after sacred rivers and external temple bathing ghats (மஞ்சனம்). He reveals that the purest, most immaculate waters, as well as the Supreme Lord Himself, reside right within our own bodily temple. The true bath is the boundary-transcending bath of consciousness (எல்லை மஞ்சனம்)—purifying the mind in the ambrosial nectar of the Sahasrara. When the seeker performs the singular, non-dual inner worship (ஏகபூசை) of total self-surrender, the individual soul (சீவன்) discovers its true identity as the eternal cosmic dancer of Tillai (Chidambaram), dancing ecstatically within the blissful state of Shiva.

Verse 232

  1. 1Uyiragaththil ninridum udambeduththa tharkumun
  2. 2Uyiragaaram aayidum udalugaaram aayidum
  3. 3Uyiraiyum udambaiyum onruvippadhu achchivam
  4. 4Uyirinaal udambudhaan eduththavaaru uraikkineen.

The questions about where life stood, what life and body are, and what joins them, are answered here in the singer's own voice. Before a body is taken, life stands in the inner. Life becomes the letter A. The body becomes the letter U. What makes them one is that Siva. The last line drops into plain speech. The manner in which the body was taken by means of life, the singer says, I have told.

The teaching

Providing the esoteric resolution to the existential riddles of embodiment, Sivavakkiyar explains the sacred geometry of human incarnation. Before assuming a physical body, the life-force abides in the inner sanctuary of pure Spirit. In the esoteric science of sacred sound, the vital soul (உயிர்) is the primal letter 'A' (அகாரம்—the source vowel of consciousness), while the physical body (உடல்) is the letter 'U' (உகாரம்—the manifests form). What mysteriously binds spirit and flesh together into living embodiment is the Supreme Lord Shiva (அச்சிவம்)—the unifying catalyst of Grace. Thus, the poet unveils the profound truth of how consciousness clothes itself in mortal flesh through the divine syllables.

Whirling is the verb until the last line turns whirling into dance. The seven worlds whirl. Endless wombs whirl. Ancient Vishnu, spread out together with Brahma, whirls. The dark power that stood beyond the eight directions whirls. Then cosmos and cosmic egg, as one, dance the original dance. The many motions are gathered into a dance at the beginning.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar portrays the entire cosmos as a single, dynamic choreography animated by the primal dance of Shiva (ஆதி நட்டம்). The seven planetary realms whirl in orbit; countless millions of wombs (அனந்த யோனி) whirl through the cycles of reincarnation; the ancient preserver Vishnu and creator Brahma whirl through cosmic aeons; and even the dark, primordial Shakti spanning beyond the eight directions whirls in cosmic momentum. Beneath and through all this apparent chaos and movement, the cosmos and the cosmic egg unite as one living organism, executing the eternal dance of the Primal One. All universal motion is recognized as the playful, ecstatic movement of Shiva alone.

Verse 234

  1. 1Uruvaniir uruppugondu uruththariththu vaiththidum

People of form take up limbs and set a shape in place. The great path is asked whether it will speak for them, and they are called fools like a ghoul. The god they are pointed toward cannot be seen, and is present as dark Vishnu and as Brahma. The instruction is to take him as one's own. Within you, know him and know him and take him. Meeting is placed inside.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar forcefully condemns anthropomorphic idol worship and the delusion of localizing the infinite within carved stone. Religious priests fashion physical idols with carved limbs, install them in stone shrines, and claim that these mute images speak for the great spiritual path. The poet derides them as fools behaving like ghosts The supreme Godhead cannot be perceived by fleshy eyes, nor is He confined to the mythic forms of dark Vishnu or Brahma. Sivavakkiyar commands seekers to claim the Divine as their own intimate reality (உரிமையாக) and realize Him continuously through deep, inward awareness (உணர்ந்துணர்ந்து கொள்ளுமே).

Verse 235

  4. 4Onnumaagi ulagaliththa onrainenjil unnumee.

A stone that was made and set in place is being called the ancient thing. The singer asks what name, through all this reckoning, the poor ones think they are pronouncing. Making, creating, keeping, and giving are then listed as powers. The one who was able, and who gave the world, is the one to deal with, and the dealing is eating. Eat that one in the heart. The printed word sits between being able and being one, and the song wants the heart's eating to begin.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar takes pity on spiritual paupers (ஏழைகாள்) who take a freshly chiseled piece of stone, set it on an altar, and worship it as the beginningless, ancient Reality (பழம்பொருள்). He asks what possible holy name they think they are pronouncing to an inert block of rock. The true Divine is that singular, omnipotent reality who creates, sustains, preserves, and dissolves the entire universe. Instead of bowing to cold stone outside, Sivavakkiyar urges seekers to 'consume' and assimilate this singular Divine Reality into the spiritual heart (நெஞ்சில் உண்ணுமே)—imbibing and digesting God within through direct contemplative realization.
