The same you is placed, line by line, in the eye, in the sky, within itself, and within the speaker. The first naming is Mal, who churned the dark sea. The dweller in the sky abides and stands there. The one within the self is the one who created the earth. The one within me stands as everywhere. The tone is address. Each line adds a place and still speaks to one listener.

The teaching

This verse is an intimate, ecstatic proclamation of the Divine's omnipresence across the microcosm and macrocosm. Sivavakkiyar addresses the Lord who churned the dark cosmic ocean (Mal/Vishnu) and created the earth: He is the resident of the heavens; He dwells within His own self-contained essence; He sits as the inner light within the eye of perception; and most wondrously, He dwells intimately within the speaker's own consciousness (என்னுளே இருப்பனே), standing as the all-pervading presence everywhere. To find the Lord of the entire cosmos seated within one's own heart is the ultimate Siddha realization of non-duality.

Verse 240

  4. 4Saadivitta kudhiraipol tharmamvandhu nirkumee.

Search the land in your ranging, search the elephant army, search crores of people. The question is whether any of that will come and stand across your path. The answer is something smaller. Alms given on the run, and merit done with a glad heart, will come and stand, like a horse that was driven and then let go. The wide search intercepts nothing. What arrives is the merit. The printed name of the land is compressed, and the sense is the country one moves through.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar reflects on the inevitability of death and the supreme efficacy of selfless compassion (தர்மம்). A person may conquer entire kingdoms, command mighty armies of elephants, and amass vast fortunes of horses and wealth; yet when the hour of death strikes, none of these worldly powers can stand across the path to protect the departing soul. What does rush forward to shield the soul? It is the alms given spontaneously to the needy and the acts of virtue performed with a glad and generous heart. Like a swift, noble war-horse unleashed in the field (சாடிவிட்ட குதிரை), heartfelt dharma gallops across the chasm of mortality to accompany and liberate the soul.

Verse 241

Sesame, iron, wool, cotton, and bronze, and then a garment, a garland, and a cloth for the lord who scooped and ate: these are the gifts named here. The turn is the receiver. If the fitting gift is given to the knower who is inside, every disease comes slowly and turns back, and that turning is Sivayam. A public list of donations is moved indoors, and the name of the healing is the five-letter name.

The teaching

Subverting orthodox ritual charities (தானம்), Sivavakkiyar reveals the true priest and recipient of sacred offerings. Religious orthodoxy prescribes elaborate donations of sesame, iron, blankets, cotton, bronze, ornate silks, and cattle to external priests to ward off sins and appease planets. The poet reveals that the true Knower/Priest (வேதியர்) is the divine Consciousness dwelling within your own heart! When the seeker offers the true internal donation—surrendering the ego and sensory desires to the inner Lord who consumed the cosmic poison—all physical and karmic diseases (நோய் அனைத்தும்) retreat. This supreme inner restoration is the miraculous healing power of Sivayam.

Verse 242

  1. 1Uurilulla manidhargaal orumanadhaayk kuudiyee
  2. 2Theerilee vadaththaivittu sembaivaiththu izhukkiriir
  3. 3Aarinaalum ariyonaadha aadhisiththa naadharai
  4. 4Porilaana manidharpannum puralipaarum paarumee.

The town is gathered with one mind, and the shared work is the chariot. They put the haul-rope to the car, set the piece the print names in a compressed word, and drag. The lord of the next line is the primal perfected one, whom no one can know. Look, the singer says, at the fraud performed by people of the quarrel. A single mind spent on hauling the car is the trick these lines want seen.

The teaching

With biting satire, Sivavakkiyar exposes the collective delusion of temple chariot festivals (தேர்த்திருவிழா). The entire town gathers in unison, grasping massive ropes to drag a colossal wooden chariot bearing a brass or copper idol (செம்பு) through the streets. The poet highlights the tragic irony: the Supreme Primal Siddha Lord (ஆதிசித்த நாதர்) is boundless, formless, and uncontainable by any mind or structure. Yet people who are perpetually engaged in petty social conflicts stage this massive, noisy spectacle, pulling a heavy piece of metal while remaining entirely blind to the living God within their own hearts. Sivavakkiyar urges the wise to see through this collective religious theater.

Verse 243

  1. 1Marulpugundha sindhaiyaal mayanguginra maandharee
  2. 2Kurukkoduththa mandhiram konduniindha valliireel

  4. 4Paruththipatta pannirandu paadudhaan paduvaree.

Delusion has entered the mind, and the people are wandering. The mantra the guru gave is allowed its chance: take it, if you can, and swim. What follows is hard. The servant the guru gave, and the child whose face the line calls broken, will meet the twelve lots that fell to cotton. The images are tight and uncertain in the print. A guru's gift stands beside an ordeal the song names in full.

The teaching

Addressing those whose minds are clouded by spiritual delusion (மருள்), Sivavakkiyar emphasizes the rigorous, testing ordeal of true spiritual discipleship. If an aspirant has the fortitude to grasp the sacred mantra imparted by the Satguru and use it to cross the turbulent ocean of worldly existence, they must be prepared for the intense alchemical purification of the soul. Just as raw cotton must endure twelve harrowing stages of beating, carding, spinning, and weaving before becoming a pure cloth, the disciple must undergo severe trials that completely dismantle personal ego, vanity, and comfort. Spiritual liberation is not a cheap verbal ritual, but the radical purification of consciousness through fire.

Verse 244

  4. 4Thanganar perumaidhandhu thalaivanaay valarndhadhee.

Inside the chamber of the mother's womb these lines see the shining of fire. Something comes and stays in that chamber as a rare form that arrived. The printed phrase is compressed, and rare is the plain sense, while the name Hari also hovers in the same syllables. When it stood equal to itself, it cut the barrier and was the open. It gave a great golden worth and grew as the chief. The growth is told as a thing already accomplished.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar perceives the mystery of human gestation as a sacred spiritual alchemy. Within the dark chamber of the maternal womb, the divine essence abides as the brilliant radiance of inner fire (அங்கியின் பிரகாசம்), where the formless takes on a rare, wondrous human form. When the developing body reaches its full harmony, it breaks through the restrictive barrier of the womb and emerges into the open world. Endowed with innate spiritual nobility, the soul is destined to grow not as a helpless slave to circumstance, but as a sovereign master of consciousness (தலைவன்)—a fully awakened being who commands its own spiritual liberation.
