The madmen are people who have taken the name of Brahman and still ask whether the thing they seized, and the thing that clings, is theirs. They are charged with leaving a thick disguise and taking caste difference in its place. One costume comes off, and a division is put on. If they can speak the truth of the one Siva who stood refined, they may go and join the lord whom the line calls startled. The meeting is offered as possible, and the caste-taking has just been named.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a blistering condemnation of ascetics who claim knowledge of the Supreme Brahman while harboring caste arrogance. He challenges wandering ascetics who carry the ascetic staff (தண்டு) and call themselves enlightened (பிரமமான பித்தர்): Does holding a wooden stick confer spiritual authority? You cast off one thick disguise only to don the far more poisonous delusion of caste superiority (சாதிபேதம்). If, instead of clinging to social divisiveness, you possess the spiritual courage to speak and embody the unvarnished truth of the singular, refined Shiva, you will instantly merge with the awe-inspiring Divine who shatters all worldly falsehood.

The song says you, and keeps saying it. You are power, you are grace, and you are the voice of the sounding conch. You are attainment, you are Siva, and you are the letter that is Sivayam. You are release, you are the source, and you are the god who became the three. After that litany the last line points inward. A compound left packed in the print sits within you, and you are told to know it and realize it.

The teaching

In a magnificent, sweeping non-dual litany, Sivavakkiyar proclaims that the Divine is the sum and essence of all existence, discovered within oneself. Addressing the Supreme Reality, he declares: You are Shakti (creative energy), You are Grace, You are the celestial sound of the conch (Nada). You are spiritual attainment (Siddhi), You are Shiva, and You are the sacred letters of Sivayam. You are ultimate liberation (Mukti), You are the uncaused Source, and You are the cosmic Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra). After this cosmic declaration, the poet turns the seeker inward: realize this all-encompassing reality within the citadel of your own bodily temple (அத்திபூரம்).

Scholars are mocked in their clothes. The shirt is on, the beads shine, and they are quibblers of the treatises. They stack the book and recite the lesson, and they are called liars. Then come the questions a quotation cannot hide. What is firm practice? What is knowledge? What of the letter the compressed print places in the water, or in the you who stood? What is the marked division? Tell me, the line says, you wicked deceivers.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar launches a fierce polemic against hypocritical scholars and fraudulent religious teachers. He mocks orthodox pedants who wear ornate robes (சட்டையிட்டு), display polished rudraksha beads, and endlessly quibble over scriptural rules. They pile up stacks of palm-leaf manuscripts and lecture self-importantly on wisdom, yet live as deceivers and frauds. The poet demands answers to the essential spiritual questions: What is true meditative stillness (நிட்டை)? What is genuine wisdom (ஞானம்)? What is the primal seed-letter that sustains life, and what do your painted forehead stripes amount to? He exposes the utter emptiness of book-learning divorced from direct realization.

Clear knowers are asked to explain a sequence the song states and leaves packed. The true seed stood as the means. Becoming white, it ran swiftly in the water, and the printed phrase for that running is compressed. The cool body bore it, and a form came to be. The knowers are told to become clear and say it. These lines belong with the songs of seed and body, and they insist that someone speak the sequence aloud.

The teaching

Closing this sequence, Sivavakkiyar poses the profound biological and metaphysical mystery of conception and embodiment to true knowers (தெண்மையான ஞானிகள்). He asks them to elucidate the divine chemistry of birth: how the vital seminal seed (சுக்கிலம்) acted as the subtle vehicle; how that fluid substance moved swiftly through the waters of life; and how the cool, sheltering womb coagulated and sculpted this marvelous human frame. By demanding that seers explain the genesis of the physical body, Sivavakkiyar reveals that embodiment is not a random accident of passion, but a sacred, cosmic vessel crafted for the soul's ultimate awakening.

The verse faces people who nurse a crooked birth because they want it, and who want it in the mind. The five letters are the short name in which Siva is held, and here they are a truth still to be learned. One condition governs the whole song. If that false birth can be killed, the truth of the letters can be taken in. While the wanting remains, the name stays out of reach. The tone is a warning with a door left open.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar addresses the fundamental existential delusion that ensnares humanity: the deep-seated, covert attachment to worldly identity and embodiment (வஞ்சகப் பிறவி). Humanity clings unconsciously to mortal existence through latent desires (vasanas) harbored within the depths of the mind, and because of this stubborn craving, remains utterly blind to the transcendent mystery of the Five Letters (Panchakshara / நமசிவாய). The sacred syllables cannot be decoded through intellectual curiosity or ritualistic chanting as long as the ego cherishes its own bondage. The Siddha sets down an uncompromising prerequisite: only if one possesses the fierce spiritual resolve and yogic discipline to eradicate this fraudulent, self-perpetuating cycle of bodily desire (வதைத்திடவும் வல்லீரேல்) will the true ontological reality of the Five Letters unveil itself as the living, liberating ground of pure Consciousness.

Each picture catches an enjoyment cut off from its source. Bees that love ripe fruit work a grove that bears none. Honey with no bee in it is eaten through sleep that lasts night and day. A ship with no sail is boarded, and the far shore is named before anyone arrives. The close asks whether silence-knowledge is a thing the mouth can say. The print presses the question against the word for silence.

The teaching

Through a sequence of striking esoteric paradoxes, Sivavakkiyar exposes the tragic absurdity of theoretical spirituality and self-deluded seekers. Worldly minds are like bees buzzing fruitlessly in an orchard that never bears fruit—hungering for sweet realization while chasing dry, phantom worldly pursuits. They claim to taste the bee-less honey (the divine nectar / amrita) yet remain deadened in the deep slumber of spiritual ignorance night and day. Boarding a sailless vessel—the fragile, unsteered raft of the mortal body devoid of yogic mastery and divine grace—they boast of having already crossed to the distant shore of liberation. The poet punctures this arrogant pretense with cutting irony: can the supreme wisdom of transcendent stillness (மவுன ஞானம் / the silent realization of the Sahasrara) ever be trivialized and captured through the noisy chatter of the physical mouth? Authentic realization is born of profound interior silence, not hollow verbal rhetoric.
