Scholars are mocked in their clothes. The shirt is on, the beads shine, and they are quibblers of the treatises. They stack the book and recite the lesson, and they are called liars. Then come the questions a quotation cannot hide. What is firm practice? What is knowledge? What of the letter the compressed print places in the water, or in the you who stood? What is the marked division? Tell me, the line says, you wicked deceivers.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar launches a fierce polemic against hypocritical scholars and fraudulent religious teachers. He mocks orthodox pedants who wear ornate robes (சட்டையிட்டு), display polished rudraksha beads, and endlessly quibble over scriptural rules. They pile up stacks of palm-leaf manuscripts and lecture self-importantly on wisdom, yet live as deceivers and frauds. The poet demands answers to the essential spiritual questions: What is true meditative stillness (நிட்டை)? What is genuine wisdom (ஞானம்)? What is the primal seed-letter that sustains life, and what do your painted forehead stripes amount to? He exposes the utter emptiness of book-learning divorced from direct realization.

Clear knowers are asked to explain a sequence the song states and leaves packed. The true seed stood as the means. Becoming white, it ran swiftly in the water, and the printed phrase for that running is compressed. The cool body bore it, and a form came to be. The knowers are told to become clear and say it. These lines belong with the songs of seed and body, and they insist that someone speak the sequence aloud.

The teaching

Closing this sequence, Sivavakkiyar poses the profound biological and metaphysical mystery of conception and embodiment to true knowers (தெண்மையான ஞானிகள்). He asks them to elucidate the divine chemistry of birth: how the vital seminal seed (சுக்கிலம்) acted as the subtle vehicle; how that fluid substance moved swiftly through the waters of life; and how the cool, sheltering womb coagulated and sculpted this marvelous human frame. By demanding that seers explain the genesis of the physical body, Sivavakkiyar reveals that embodiment is not a random accident of passion, but a sacred, cosmic vessel crafted for the soul's ultimate awakening.

Verse 250

  1. 1Vanjagap piraviyai manaththulee virumbiyee
  2. 2Anjezhuththin unmaiyai arigilaadha maandhargaal
  3. 3Vanjagap piraviyai vadhaiththidavum valliireel
  4. 4Anjezhuththin unmaiyai arindhugolla laagumee.

The verse faces people who nurse a crooked birth because they want it, and who want it in the mind. The five letters are the short name in which Siva is held, and here they are a truth still to be learned. One condition governs the whole song. If that false birth can be killed, the truth of the letters can be taken in. While the wanting remains, the name stays out of reach. The tone is a warning with a door left open.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar addresses the fundamental existential delusion that ensnares humanity: the deep-seated, covert attachment to worldly identity and embodiment (வஞ்சகப் பிறவி). Humanity clings unconsciously to mortal existence through latent desires (vasanas) harbored within the depths of the mind, and because of this stubborn craving, remains utterly blind to the transcendent mystery of the Five Letters (Panchakshara / நமசிவாய). The sacred syllables cannot be decoded through intellectual curiosity or ritualistic chanting as long as the ego cherishes its own bondage. The Siddha sets down an uncompromising prerequisite: only if one possesses the fierce spiritual resolve and yogic discipline to eradicate this fraudulent, self-perpetuating cycle of bodily desire (வதைத்திடவும் வல்லீரேல்) will the true ontological reality of the Five Letters unveil itself as the living, liberating ground of pure Consciousness.

Verse 251

Each picture catches an enjoyment cut off from its source. Bees that love ripe fruit work a grove that bears none. Honey with no bee in it is eaten through sleep that lasts night and day. A ship with no sail is boarded, and the far shore is named before anyone arrives. The close asks whether silence-knowledge is a thing the mouth can say. The print presses the question against the word for silence.

The teaching

Through a sequence of striking esoteric paradoxes, Sivavakkiyar exposes the tragic absurdity of theoretical spirituality and self-deluded seekers. Worldly minds are like bees buzzing fruitlessly in an orchard that never bears fruit—hungering for sweet realization while chasing dry, phantom worldly pursuits. They claim to taste the bee-less honey (the divine nectar / amrita) yet remain deadened in the deep slumber of spiritual ignorance night and day. Boarding a sailless vessel—the fragile, unsteered raft of the mortal body devoid of yogic mastery and divine grace—they boast of having already crossed to the distant shore of liberation. The poet punctures this arrogant pretense with cutting irony: can the supreme wisdom of transcendent stillness (மவுன ஞானம் / the silent realization of the Sahasrara) ever be trivialized and captured through the noisy chatter of the physical mouth? Authentic realization is born of profound interior silence, not hollow verbal rhetoric.

Verse 252

  1. 1Peeygal peeygal engiriir pidharkuginra peeyargaal,
  2. 2Peeygalpuusai kollumo pidaaripuusai kollumo
  3. 3Aadhipuusai kollumo anaadhi puusai kollumo
  4. 4Kaayamaana peeyalo kanakkarindhu kondadhee.

People who point and say ghosts are turned into the ghosts themselves, and the name is given to their babble. The song then asks whether an offering is even received: worship aimed at ghosts, worship of Pidari, a rite called primal, a rite called beginningless. The last line names the ghost that counts. It is the body. The reckoning of that body is already known, so feeding spirits at the door does not change the sum. The voice is sharp and tired of the show.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a blistering critique of superstitious religion, folk demonology, and fear-driven rituals. Orthodoxy terrifies people with tales of restless spirits and malevolent ghosts, prompting fearful animal sacrifices and offerings to village deities like Pidari. Sivavakkiyar turns the accusation back upon the priests and villagers: those who babble in fear of external phantoms are themselves the real ghosts, alienated from divine awareness. Can blood offerings and rituals truly feed bodiless spirits, appease village goddesses, or reach the Beginningless, Primal Godhead? The poet unveils the ultimate esoteric truth: the only ravenous 'ghost' demanding continuous sacrifice is the mortal physical body itself (காயமான பேய்). This perishable flesh relentlessly consumes vital breath, food, and lifespans according to its karmic reckoning, only to end in dust. Wisdom lies not in appeasing roadside specters, but in mastering and transcending this ghostly fleshly vessel.

Verse 253

  4. 4Meelumveeru kaangileen vilaindhadhee sivaayamee.

The song steps inside the body and draws a small figure. In the root circle a triangle stands as the beginning. Four gates are there, and our Lord is the mantra that rose in their midst. Eight petals are set down, cool and opened, like a design drawn on the ground. The singer then refuses a further, different sight. What ripened in that place is Sivayam. The name is not added from a book. It is what the figure itself brought to fruit.

The teaching

An explicit revelation of Kundalini yoga and subtle chakra architecture. Sivavakkiyar guides the seeker into the foundational subtle center: the Muladhara (மூலமண்டலம்), envisioned as a root square of four doorways enclosing the primal downward-pointing triangle. At the exact nexus of this energetic matrix, the primordial mantra of our Supreme Lord spontaneously surges upward as living dormant fire. Ascending through the central channel, it unfolds into the cool, blossoming eight-petaled lotus of the heart (Anahata), radiating serene nectar and divine illumination. Beholding this magnificent inner alchemy, the realized Siddha completely abandons all external theological searches, stone temples, and sectarian scriptures. Beyond this radiant inner blossoming, nothing else exists: the entire universe and one's own being have ripened into the undivided, sweet reality of 'Sivayam'.
