Temples, tanks, and the mark where priests stand are where the mind goes astray, and so do illusion and the lap. The address is direct: you are bewildered there. If Ayan and Aran are known and taken in, the result is like oneself seated with mother and with father. The public places of worship are the scene of confusion, and the family seat is the likeness of real knowing.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a devastating critique of orthodox religion, priestcraft, and external idol worship. Blind seekers wander between brick temples, bathing tanks, and sectarian caste marks, completely bewildered by greedy priests (குருக்கள்) and deceptive doctrines. They waste their mortal lives in delusion and spiritual lethargy. If one could truly understand and intuitively realize the inner unity of Ayan (Vishnu / the preserver) and Aran (Shiva / the destroyer)—recognizing that Hari and Hara are one non-dual reality within consciousness—such an awakened seeker rests in profound, intimate peace, like a beloved child securely seated in the loving embrace of both Mother and Father. External shrines become utterly superfluous when the Divine Parents reside within the heart.

Verse 393

  1. 1Koyil engum onralo, kulangalniirgal onralo?

  3. 3Aayasiivan engumaay amarndhudhavaaradhu onralo?
  4. 4Kaayamiidharindha peergal kaatsiyaavar kaanumee.

Temple, tank, light, wind, and Siva are each asked whether they are already one, and the life that searched is asked the same, together with whatever sat and gave help. The questions walk through the places and forces people treat as separate sites. At the end, the people who have known this body become the vision itself, and they are told to look. Knowing the body is the seeing the questions were pressing toward.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar exposes the absurdity of sectarian boundaries and sacred geography. Is not the cosmic temple essentially One everywhere? Is not water identically the same across all temple tanks, streams, and oceans? Are not fire (தேயு) and wind (வாயு) universal elements operating uniformly across the universe? And is not Shiva—the supreme consciousness—identically One within all? Is not the discerning soul pervasive and identical in all beings? Those enlightened masters who realize the profound truth of this physical body (காயம்) as the true living cosmos transcend all ritualistic divisions; they become the very vision of divine reality (காட்சி), seeing the One in all and all in the One.

Verse 394

  1. 1Kaadhugangal muukkuvaay kalandhavaaradhu onralo?

  4. 4Naadhaviidu arindhapeergal naadharaavar kaanumee.

Ear, eyes, nose, and mouth are asked if what was mixed of them is one. What was lifted after the light was set, and the five pleasures, are asked if they are one. The treatise that was recited and stored, and what arose, are asked if they are one. Then the people who have known the house of sound will become the lords of sound. Senses, pleasures, and the stored book are all brought under the sound's house.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar points to the fundamental unity of human biology and consciousness. Do not the ears, eyes, nose, and mouth function through the exact same conscious life-force in every human being, regardless of caste or creed? Is not the inner spark of light that enlivens the five sensory pleasures identical in all people? Did not all scriptures and holy treatises (சாத்திரம்) originate from that very same singular source of human consciousness? Those rare, illumined souls who realize the inner mansion of primal sound (நாத வீடு / the subtlest realm of unstruck resonance) become sovereign Masters (நாதர்). They do not serve outward dogmas; they embody the supreme reality itself.

Verse 395

  1. 1Avvudhiththa atsaraththin utkalandha atsaram
  2. 2Savvudhiththa mandhiram sambulaththu irundhadhaal
  3. 3Mavvudhiththa maaygaiyaal mayanguginra maandhargaal,
  4. 4Uvvudhiththadhu avvumaay uruththariththadhu unmaiyee.

The line runs a set of letter-births: av, sav, mav, uv. The syllable mixed inside the syllable from which av arose comes first. The mantra from which sav arose was inside Sambhu, and because of that the illusion from which mav arose bewilders people. What arose as uv, being also av, is the thing that took form, and that is the truth. The address to the bewildered sits in the middle of the letter-run.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar unpacks the esoteric algebra of the sacred syllables: 'A' (அகாரம் - origin), 'U' (உகாரம் - preservation/form), 'M' (மகாரம் - dissolution/veil), and 'Si' (சிகாரம் - Shiva). The syllable arising from 'A' conceals the secret inner letters, and the mantra rooted in 'Si' resides within the lotus casket of the heart. Fools are hopelessly bewildered by the cosmic illusion (மாயை) generated by the letter 'M'—the principle of obscuration and egoic sleep. In ultimate truth, that which arose as 'U' (energy/form) and that which manifested as 'A' (primal consciousness) take embodied shape together. The entire physical universe and human body are the direct incarnation of this primordial sonic truth.

Verse 396

  1. 1Agaaramennum akkaraththil akkaram ozhindhadho?
  2. 2Agaaramennum akkaraththil avvuvandhu udhiththadho?
  3. 3Ugaaramum agaaramum onrinanru ninradho?
  4. 4Vigaaramatra gnaanigaal, virindhuraikka veenumee.

The questions are handed to the knowers who are free of distortion. In the letter called a, did the letter cease? In that same letter, did av come and arise? Did the letter u and the letter a stand as one firm thing? The singer asks them to explain it at full length. This saying is the demand, and the telling they owe is a wide one.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar poses profound metaphysical riddles to realized sages. In the primordial letter 'A' (அகாரம்), did all other letters dissolve? Or did the universe of sound spring forth from 'A'? Did the letter 'U' (dynamic Shakti) and the letter 'A' (pure Shiva) unite in immaculate, indivisible harmony? Sivavakkiyar challenges those serene sages who are free from mental distortions (விகாரமற்ற ஞானிகள்) to articulate this mystery: the profound non-dual truth that Shiva and Shakti, stillness and movement, origin and manifestation, are forever intertwined in the uncreated syllable.

Verse 397

  3. 3Suththiaindhu kuudamonru sollirandha thorveli
  4. 4Saththisivamum aagininru thanmaiyaavadhu unmaiyee.

Truth is named as your body, and the life that wavers is Siva inside. The babblers are told that past this there is nothing left to rattle on about. Then a further picture is given anyway: five purities, one hall, an open that speech has left, standing as both Sakti and Siva, and coolness as the truth. The scolding stops their extra talk. The account that remains is body, inner Siva, one room, and a coolness.

The teaching

In one of the most radical, definitive verses in all Siddha literature, Sivavakkiyar declares the absolute pinnacle of embodied mysticism: Shakti is your very physical body (சத்தி உன்னுடல்), and the flickering, vibrant soul within is Shiva Himself (உட்சிவம்)! Calling dogmatic disputants "fools and madmen" (பித்தர்காள்), he commands them to stop their senseless theological babble, for there is no higher truth than this embodied non-duality. Purifying the five sensory elements within the single hall of the body (கூடம்), one enters the ineffable expanse (சொல்லிறந்த வெளி) that lies beyond all human speech. Standing as the unified presence of Shakti and Shiva, consciousness settles into supreme, cooling peace (தண்மை)—the ultimate, undeniable Truth.
