Verse 460

  1. 1Thodakkadhenru niirvizhath thodanguginra uumargaal
  2. 2Thodakkirundhadhu evvidam? suththiyaanadhu evvidam?
  3. 3Thodakkirundha vaararindhu suththapanna valliireel
  4. 4Thodakkilaadha sodhiyaith thodarndhugaana laagumee.

People who cannot say where anything starts are already falling into water and calling the fall a beginning. The song calls them mutes and asks where that beginning stood, and where the thing they call pure actually is. If the manner of the start can be known and made pure, the light that never began can be followed and seen.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar lambasts superstitious pilgrims who plunge into holy rivers and temple tanks, foolishly believing that splashing water over their physical skin constitutes the beginning of spiritual purification. He calls them spiritually dumb (ஊமர்காள்) and challenges them to identify where defilement truly originates and where authentic purity resides. Water cannot wash away the deep stains of ignorance and ego. Only when the seeker understands the true source of consciousness and purifies the inner life-force can they transcend temporal origins and behold the beginningless, eternal Light of the Supreme.

A buffalo, as the gloss names மேதி, and a cow, if they mate because they want to, are the picture of a body called caste-difference being put on. The same demand is then made of a man who chants the Veda and a woman the line brands புலைச்சி, an outcaste name. If those two join, speak the manner in which no difference is born. The birth is the argument.

The teaching

With unsparing logical brilliance, Sivavakkiyar dismantles the social myth of caste hierarchy using raw biological reality. If two distinct animal species like a cow and a buffalo mate, the offspring bears obvious physical markers of mixture. Yet when a high-caste Vedic scholar unites with an outcaste woman, the child born of their union possesses the exact same human form, organs, and blood, without the slightest natural marker of caste. Sivavakkiyar fiercely challenges orthodox hypocrites to explain this lack of distinction, proving that caste is merely an artificial, oppressive human construct with no basis in nature or the eyes of the Divine.

Verse 462

  4. 4Nagaikkumaaru manu erikkanaalumnaalum naaduviir.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 462, this gloss explains a word in verse 461:

The people addressed name clan after clan and plead the case. They are told to seek the plain truth of those clans taken as one mass. What they have seen, the line says, is nothing other than a surplus of seed. The close is compressed: day after day they hunt a laughable way to burn Manu, the name tied to the old code of ranks.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar ridicules the endless disputes and legalistic bickering over caste superiority and noble lineage. He demands that people look directly at the biological genesis of humanity: stripped of societal illusions, every human being—king, priest, or outcaste—originates from the exact same drop of male semen and female ovum in the darkness of the womb. To assert divine superiority based on ancestry while sharing the identical visceral origin is utterly laughable. By exposing this undeniable biological equality, the Siddha incinerates the orthodox authority of the Manusmriti and its discriminatory social stratification.

Verse 463

  1. 1Odhumnaalu veedhamum uraiththa saaththirangalum
  2. 2Puudhaththaththu vangalum porundhum aagamangalum
  3. 3Saadhipeedha unmaiyum thayanguginra nuulgalum
  4. 4Peedhapeedhama aagiyee pirandhuuzhanru irundhadhee.

The four Vedas that are chanted, the sastras that were spoken, the principles of the elements, the Agamas that sit with them, the claim that caste-difference is a truth, and the books that waver are stacked in one pile. Their career is a single sentence. They became difference upon difference, were born, and have gone on milling about.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar exposes the spiritual poverty of memorizing the four Vedas, legal codes, and theological treatises without internal realization. Scholars parrot sacred verses like mindless automatons, completely missing the living reality behind the words. The true Veda is not ink on palm leaves or recited phonemes, but the primordial Supreme Lord who is the source of all knowledge. Once the seeker experiences this primal Lord permanently enthroned within their own heart, external scriptural duties, Vedic rituals, and scholarly recitations become entirely redundant. Direct communion supersedes all secondary texts.

Verse 464

  1. 1Angalingam puunduniir agandapuusai seygiriir
  2. 2Angalingam puunduniir amarndhirundha maarpanee
  3. 3Engumodi engum engum iidazhindhu maaygiriir
  4. 4Sengalsembu kallelaam sirandhupaarkkum muudaree.

A linga worn on the body is made the instrument of what they call worship of the undivided. The one who has settled that linga on the chest is addressed, then shown running everywhere, ruined in the bargain, and gone. Brick, copper, and stone are what such fools stare at with pride. The undivided is not a thing those materials can hold.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a stinging critique of sectarian outward symbols and idolatry. Devotees tie miniature lingas to their bodies and boast of conducting "undivided cosmic worship" (அகண்ட பூசை), yet their attention remains hopelessly trapped in finite physical matter. They exhaust their lives trekking endlessly to distant pilgrimage sites, bowing before baked bricks, cast copper, and carved granite statues. Sivavakkiyar calls them tragic fools: the boundless, formless Absolute (Akhanda) cannot be contained in minerals or metal charms. To seek the omnipresent Spirit in dead matter while ignoring the living Divine within is complete spiritual ruin.

Verse 465

  1. 1Thiittam thiittam enruniir thinamummuuzhgum muudaree
  2. 2Thiittamaagi allavo thirandugaayam aanadhum
  3. 3Puuttagaayam ummulee pugazhuginra peeyaree
  4. 4Thiittuvandhu kondalo thelindhadhee sivaayamee.

Every day they plunge, saying pollution twice, and the song calls them fools. The body they wash, it says, clumped into a body by becoming that same pollution. They are called ghosts for praising, inside themselves, the body that is locked. Whether pollution has seized them is left as a question. What has grown clear is Sivayam, the five-letter name.

The teaching

The Siddha ruthlessly exposes the hypocrisy of those who obsessively take ritual baths to cleanse themselves of caste or ceremonial defilement (தீட்டு). Sivavakkiyar reminds these ritualists that the human physical body itself is conceived and coagulated in maternal blood and reproductive fluids—the very biological substances orthodoxy brands as impure. To lavish pride on a fragile cage of flesh while neurotically bathing in ponds to wash away superficial dirt is madness. True purification cannot be achieved with river water; the only power capable of dissolving fundamental delusion and sanctifying the soul is the luminous resonance of the Five Letters (Sivayam).
