Verse 484

  3. 3Eththanaipeer enninum ettirandum paththalo?
  4. 4Aththanukkidhu eerkumo arivilaadha maandharee?

Someone brightens the bell every day, sits a long time gone into a corner, cries at a lamp-wick, and keeps the eyes shut. The song asks what profit that is. Then a child's sum: however many people count, eight and two make ten, and does that suit the Father? People with no understanding are left holding a correct total the line will not accept as worship. மணி can be bell or bead; corner and wick fix a huddled rite.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar scorns the covert, theatrical pieties of sectarian ritualists who retreat into dark room corners, obsessively polish bronze bells and idols, and squeeze their eyes shut to weep over burning oil wicks. He asks what spiritual gain can possibly come from such dramatic posturing. Invoking the classic Siddha numerical riddle of 'eight and two' (எட்டிரண்டு)—which conventionally equals ten, but esoterically signifies the mystical union of 'A' (8 / Shiva) and 'U' (2 / Shakti) in the central breath—the Siddha mocks those who treat sacred wisdom as superficial arithmetic or mechanical ritual. Does such shallow, ignorant mumbo-jumbo befit the majestic cosmic Father?

Verse 485

  1. 1Ettirandum kuudiyee ilingamaana theevanai
  2. 2Mattadhaaga ummulee madhiththunokka valliireel
  3. 3Kattamaana piravien karungadal kadakkalaam
  4. 4Ittamaana oliyinodu isaindhiruppiir kaanminee.

Eight and two, the sum just left as a child's total, are now joined in the god who is the linga. If he is reckoned within as the measure and looked at, a bound birth is asked why it should hold, and the black sea can be crossed. You will stay in accord with the light that was set. The line says to see. The count matters once it is inside that god.

The teaching

Building upon the esoteric cipher of 'eight and two', Sivavakkiyar reveals the true nature of the Linga. The authentic Linga is not a sculpted stone pillar on an earthly pedestal, but the divine confluence of the primary cosmic letters 'A' and 'U'—the inner harmonization of Shiva and Shakti within the Sushumna. If a seeker can anchor their awareness within and contemplate this living divine pillar of light as the measure of their own soul, the dark and stormy ocean of karmic birth is effortlessly crossed. In place of existential struggle, the yogi enters into sublime, permanent attunement with the beloved Supreme Light.

Verse 486

  1. 1Unmaiyaana mandhiram oliyilee irundhidum
  2. 2Thanmaiyaana mandhiram samaindhuruupam aagiyee
  3. 3Venmaiyaana mandhiram vilaindhuniira thaaneedhee
  4. 4Unmaiyaana mandhiram adhonrumee sivaayamee.

Three mantras are given a quality, and a fourth returns to the true one. The true mantra rests in the light. The cool mantra, once prepared, becomes a form. The white mantra ripens and itself becomes ash. That one true mantra is Sivayam. Light, form, and ash lie in a row, and the name at the end is not a fourth object beside them.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar distills the essence of all sacred utterances into their primordial source. The authentic mantra does not reside in ink, sound vibrations in the air, or memorized verses; it dwells intrinsically within pure, uncreated Light. When this luminous resonance cools and condenses, it gives birth to cosmic form; when it ripens into total dissolution, it manifests as the sacred white ash of pure transcendence. Sivavakkiyar declares that this singular, primordial vibration behind all creation, preservation, and dissolution is none other than the Five Letters—Sivayam. To realize this inner vibration is to possess the crown of all mantras.

Verse 487

  1. 1Thachchuvaayil uchchimeel aayiram thalangalaay
  2. 2Muchchudarum muuvirandum muundezhundha thiichchudar
  3. 3Vachchiram adhaagiyee valarndhuninradhu evvidam?
  4. 4Ichchudarum indhiriyamum eegamaanadhu engnganee?

Above the crown, at a gate the print calls தச்சுவாயில், a compressed compound, a thousand places stand. Three flames and six, the twice-three, are the fire-flame that sprang up burning. Become the thunderbolt, that flame is asked where it grew. The question the song will not skip is how this flame and the senses became one thing.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar lifts the veil on the highest mystery of Kundalini yoga. Above the cranial vault, at the mystical threshold of the crown (Brahmarandhra), unfolds the thousand-petaled lotus of the Sahasrara (ஆயிரம் தலங்கள்). Here, the three cosmic lights (Sun, Moon, and Fire) and the energies of the six foundational chakras fuse into a singular, soaring pillar of fire, crystallizing into the indestructible diamond-light of the Vajra nadi. The Siddha poses a breathtaking philosophical and experiential riddle: Where does this cosmic thunderbolt dwell, and how does this transcendental fire become seamlessly unified with the physical sense organs? He who resolves this experiential riddle realizes that the sensory body and the supreme flame are one undivided reality.

Verse 488

  1. 1Vallavaasal onpadhum maruththadaiththa vaasalum
  2. 2Sollumvaasal oraindhum sollavimmi ninradhum
  3. 3Nallavaasa laiththirandhu gnaanavaasal uudupoy
  4. 4Ellaivaasal kandapin inippirappa thillaiyee.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 488, this gloss explains a word in verse 481: 481.

Gates are counted without a separate map. Nine are strong, one is barred by refusal, five speak, and something stood choking on the word. The good gate is opened, the gate of knowledge is passed through, and after the boundary gate is seen the count ends. There is no being born again. Bar and stammer belong to the passing.

The teaching

The human body is an earthly citadel pierced by nine outward-facing gates of sensory perception and physical elimination. Sivavakkiyar explains that the tenth gate—the cranial portal of Brahmarandhra—remains firmly shut to ordinary mortals, causing ignorant seekers to sink into despondency and despair. Yet, when the yogi transcends sensory agitation and closes the doors of worldly suffering through pranic mastery, this hidden portal transforms into the Gateway of Supreme Bliss (ஆனந்தத்தின் வாசல்). At this ultimate crown threshold, all seeking ceases, for the Supreme Lord Himself steps forward to abide with the liberated soul.

Verse 489

  1. 1Vandupuu manangalodu vandhirundha theenelaam
  2. 2Undulee adangumvannam odhulinga muulamaayk
  3. 3Kandu kandu veerilee karuththodunga valliireel
  4. 4Pandugonda valvinai parandhidum sivaayamee.

Honey that came with bee, flower, and scent is to be held in, and the linga that is chanted is the root of that holding. If, by looking and looking, thought can sink at the root, strong karma taken long ago flies. The line gives that flying the name Sivayam. Sweetness is made to settle. The old deed is what leaves.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar exposes the tragic blindness of human beings toward mortality. Like a wild bee that greedily exhausts every drop of sweet nectar from a flower, a man squanders his vital energy in lust, sensual indulgence, and worldly pleasures. Yet the moment the life-breath (jiva) slips out of the fleshy cage, relatives treat the beloved body as a foul contagion, while priests hasten to shutter the temple doors in dread of death-defilement. Sivavakkiyar calls them pathetic fools with no spiritual discernment: they indulged the flesh while it lived, and now cower before dead clay, completely blind to the eternal Spirit that was animating the vessel all along.
