The song turns on you and names the body you are proud of. It is a wasting elemental thing, water lying like scurf, and you are the fool who rose with pleasure inside a pot that stinks. The way out is narrow. If the irritation of the five who rage can be cut, you become breath in one of the six of the lord whose matted hair is counted in crores.

The teaching

A scathing, uncompromising reality check on human arrogance and bodily vanity. The poet compares the frail, decomposing physical frame to an unstable heap of elements and diseased scum (சுணங்கு), born from a foul, boiling womb-pot (நாறுகின்ற கும்பி) filled with impure fluids. Despite such humble and perishable biological origins, humans puff themselves up with egoic pride. Sivavakkiyar presents the only true way of transcendence: mastering and severing the turbulent attachments of the five raging senses (சீறுகின்ற ஐவர்). For the yogi who tames these five feral faculties, the soul ascends through the central spinal channel to unite with Shiva—the cosmic ascetic whose matted hair radiates in millions of luminous rays (ஆறுகோடி வேணியார்)—becoming absorbed into the transcendent sixth state of pure, immortal consciousness beyond bodily corruption.

Verse 102

  1. 1Vattamenru ummulee mayakkivitta thivveli

A bright space inside you has called itself a circle and left you confused. The line then sets restraint and drawing-in inside a compressed eightfold curve, and a wheel that turns as eight and eight and eight. Only the last line changes the mood. Once our Lord is known, what can be reached has already risen.

The teaching

An esoteric exposition of yogic geometry and the transcendence of mental illusion. The uninitiated mind is easily hypnotized by the concept of the void or inner space (வெளி) conceptualized as a mere external geometric circle (வட்டம்). Sivavakkiyar points to the Ashtakshara (அட்டவக்கரம் / the eightfold mystic matrix or the eight-petaled lotus of the heart/Ajna), wherein all sensory movements must be restrained and gathered into absolute yogic stillness (அடக்கமும் ஒடுக்கமும்). Operating within the mystic wheel that pulses in dynamic octaves (twenty-four tattvas of psycho-physical reality), the radiant presence of the Divine suddenly dawns. Once our indwelling Lord is experientially realized through internal concentration, the seeker effortlessly attains that which was previously deemed unreachable by the analytical intellect.

Verse 103

  1. 1பேசுவானும் ஈசனே, பிரமஞானம் உம்முளே;
  2. 2ஆசையான ஐவரும் அலைந்தருள் செய்கிறார்;

The one who speaks is the Lord, and the knowledge of the supreme is already in you. Against that, the five who are desire wander and perform what they call grace. The song's demand is to hold those five inside one letter and to keep from speaking. Then the Lord is the one who comes and talks.

The teaching

Advaitic self-realization through inner stillness and the silencing of sensory turmoil. The ultimate speaker behind every word uttered and every thought formed is none other than the indwelling Lord (பேசுவானும் ஈசனே); supreme divine gnosis (பிரமஞானம் / Brahma Jnana) is not an external attainment, but an inherent, living reality already present within one's own consciousness. However, the five outward-seeking senses (ஆசையான ஐவர்), masquerading as providers of fulfillment and pleasure, distract and scatter the vital energy. Sivavakkiyar instructs the seeker to rein in these five wanderers and dissolve them into the single primordial seed syllable (ஓர் எழுத்து—the Pranava Om / Ekakshara). By abiding in radical, thought-free inner silence (பேசிடாது இருப்பிரேல்), the personal ego recedes, and the Supreme Master Himself steps forth to illuminate the silence with divine speech.

Verse 104

  1. 1Namasivaaya anjezhuththum nalgumeel nilaigalum
  2. 2Namasivaaya anjilanjum puraanamaana maayaiyum
  3. 3Namasivaaya anjezhuththu nammulee irukkavee!
  4. 4Namasivaaya unmaiyai nanguuraisey naadhanee!

The five letters Na-ma-si-va-ya are struck four times, and each time they take a different burden. Granted, they bring the states with them. The maya that has turned into purana fears inside those five. Then the claim drops to its plainest form: the five letters are inside us. The last line asks the Lord to say that truth well.

The teaching

The supreme efficacy, cosmic scope, and intimate presence of the Five Letters (Panchakshara / நமசிவாய). Sivavakkiyar strikes the sacred five syllables four times, demonstrating how they encapsulate all levels of spiritual attainment and metaphysical planes of consciousness (மேல் நிலைகள்). Simultaneously, the five cosmic elements, the five sheaths, and the entire mythological illusion of the external universe (புராணமான மாயை) unfold from and dissolve back into these very five vibrations. Rather than searching for holy formulas in external texts or distant shrines, the Siddha boldly proclaims that the Five Letters are already naturally vibrating within our own breath, pulse, and spinal axis (நம்முளே இருக்கவே). The verse concludes with an earnest petition to the indwelling Satguru to unveil the living, experiential truth of Namasivaya within direct subjective awareness.

The address grows close. Between the supreme and the singer there is no separate fear, and the cry is Para, Para. Raised hands and joined palms are named as what is owed, then the Lord is the one who melted the head and gave nectar while moving in splendor. The strength that was given is not a mood. It is Om Namasivaya.

The teaching

A sublime expression of non-dual devotion and Siddha cranial alchemy. Between the Supreme Absolute (பரம்) and the seeker's awakened consciousness, there exists no real separation; once this non-duality is understood, all existential terror and worldly fear evaporate (பயம் இலை). Raising hands in outward supplication or joining palms in mechanical temple worship are merely superficial religious gestures. The true, internal spiritual transformation occurs when the radiant Lord of Splendor (சீருலாவு நாதன்) melts the cranial vault (சிரம் உருகி) at the Sahasrara, showering the seeker's nervous system with the ambrosial nectar of immortality (அமுது). The impenetrable fortress and supreme spiritual vigor (உரம்) bestowed upon the mystic is the primal, resonant vibration of Om Namasivaya pulsating through the awakened Sushumna.

Verse 106

  1. 1Pachchaiman padhuppilee pazhuppadhindha veettuvan
  2. 2Nichchalum ninaindhida ninaiththavannam aayidum;
  3. 3Pachchaiman idindhupoy parandhadhumbi aayidum
  4. 4Pichchargaal arindhugolga piraaniyatru kolamee.

A hunter sits in a hut of raw green clay, the tawny color settled in him. Think of him without a gap and the thought becomes the form. Then the same green clay collapses and turns into a beetle that has taken wing. The mad ones are told to recognize this as the guise the Lord himself puts on.

The teaching

The classic Siddha and Vedantic analogy of the wasp and the caterpillar A predatory hunting-wasp (வேட்டுவன்) imprisons a caterpillar within a cell of damp green clay (பச்சைமண்); through constant, uninterrupted contemplation born of intense focus, the earth-bound worm undergoes a complete biological metamorphosis, taking on the winged form of the very insect it meditates upon, until the clay prison shatters and it takes flight as a beetle (தும்பி). Addressing worldly fools as madmen (பிச்சர்காள்), Sivavakkiyar reveals this parable as the mysterious transmutation wrought by the Divine. If the soul, currently trapped in a mortal frame of perishable red and green clay, fixes its awareness unceasingly upon the Supreme, the physical shell collapses, and consciousness takes flight as liberated, radiant Spirit.
