A chain of pictures runs without a sermon attached. Someone runs and runs, weaving, until the sole of the foot goes white. A guilty cat comes and leaps into the milk. A figure called the panikkan arrives, looks, and says there is no weight. Then the thread snaps. The singer asks the Lord what marvel this is. Several of the printed words are uncertain, and the verse keeps the force of a riddle.

The teaching

Through a vivid and enigmatic folk allegory, Sivavakkiyar captures the tragic fragility of mortal existence. A weaver frantically runs back and forth laying out the warp and weft of his fabric until the soles of his feet turn white with exhaustion—symbolizing the ceaseless, lifelong toil of human beings weaving their tapestry of wealth, status, and worldly attachments. Suddenly, a thieving, sinful cat leaps into the vessel of fresh milk, instantly spoiling the hard-earned sustenance; a supervisor (பணிக்கன் / Panikkan) arrives, examines the situation, and coldly declares that there is no remaining weight or substance. In the next instant, the delicate thread of life snaps (இழை அறுந்து போனது), and the entire illusion collapses into death. Sivavakkiyar stands in awe before the Lord, crying out at this inscrutable cosmic illusion (மாயம்) that so abruptly dissolves a lifetime of worldly striving.

The inner body is given as a count. The square is four, what is hidden is eight, and the stations that abide are three. A course of breath that stands opposite pervades the circle named for it. Eight mountains of blood are numbered on the head. In the body's place of rays, nada rises and mixes. The printed sums are compressed. They are left as a chant of channels, blood, and sound.

The teaching

An esoteric map of Siddha subtle anatomy, the chakras, and Nada yoga. Sivavakkiyar describes the inner organism through symbolic numbers: the four-sided square (சதுரம் நாலு) is the Muladhara chakra; the eight hidden petals (மறைவு எட்டு) belong to the inner heart lotus (Anahata); the three abiding stations (தானம் தங்கி மூன்று) are the principal nadis (Ida, Pingala, Sushumna) or the three granthis. The six opposing currents of vital air (வாயு ஆறு) circulate through the six chakras and the subtle body. Upon the cranial crown (சிரசின் மேல் / Sahasrara), the eight subtle essences of vital nectar are gathered. In this radiant bodily vessel of divine light (கதிரதான காயகம்), the primordial, unstruck cosmic resonance (நாதம் / Nada) ascends and blends into transcendental consciousness.

The counting goes on, and it is still compressed. Four with six stands at ten, and four and three are placed above that. An upper ten comes with its reverse, and what gathers on top is one. Then the five letters appear. If the guru sits in those letters and speaks, skin and body stand forth as the sheath of nada. The sums are a way of arriving at that sheath.

The teaching

Continuing his esoteric exposition of the subtle body, Sivavakkiyar weaves the sacred numbers of yogic physiology: four added to six yields the ten primary nadis and vital airs; upon these are placed the four inner faculties and the three gunas, while sixteen subtle kalas (மேலு பத்து மாறுடன்) culminate in the supreme unity of the cranial Bindu. When the practitioner aligns this entire internal architecture within the sacred Five Letters (கோலி அஞ்செழுத்துளே), and the inner Satguru awakens to reveal the secret wisdom, a total biological and spiritual transmutation occurs. The gross physical body of skin and flesh (தோல் மேனி) is experienced no longer as inert matter, but as the luminous, vibrating sheath of pure primordial Sound (நாதமாய் தோற்றி நின்ற கோசமே).

What rose as a sheath, what stood piercing the body, and what was born as a region are gathered into one claim. They are the five letters, Sivayam. The many mantras are what the Lord partakes of. The fifty-one letters are what stood filling the vessel. Five and fifty-one are held in the same song, the short name and the full alphabet resting in one receptacle.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar reveals the sonic cosmology of the Five Letters (Sivayam) in relation to the totality of sacred speech. That which manifests as the five gross and subtle sheaths of the body (கோசம்), that which pierces and animates the fleshy cage (கூடு உருவி நின்றது), and that which was born as all the diverse realms of the universe (தேசம்) is nothing other than the Five Letters: Sivayam. While religious traditions proliferate countless millions of mantras (அனேகனேக மந்திரம்) to petition the Divine, all of them are merely permutations of the fifty-one primal letters of the alphabet (ஐம்பத்தோர் எழுத்து) that fill the cosmic matrix (ஆசயம்). Sivavakkiyar declares that this entire vast ocean of sonic manifestation is distilled, encompassed, and transcended within the supreme five-syllable resonance of Sivayam.

Limb and linga have a seat, and the twice-five letters have a place beside it. The surging lotus and the inner of those who accord are named in the same breath. The light that took a share is the five letters spread wide. Even the sound called the lion's roar is nothing other than Sivayam. Seat, flower, share of light, and roar are folded into the five letters.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar internalizes the sacred Shiva Linga and unveils the mystical experience of the 'Lion's Roar' (சிங்கநாதம்). The practitioner's own physical body is the sacred altar (பீடம்), and the indwelling consciousness is the living Linga. Spanning the twice-five subtle letters (the ten primal energies) and the blooming thousand-petaled lotus of the Sahasrara (பொங்கு தாமரை), the effulgent Light of Shiva shares its radiant presence in the hearts of those who attain inner harmony. At the height of Kundalini absorption, the yogi hears the thunderous, majestic inner sound known as the Lion-Nada (சிங்கநாத ஓசை)—the supreme reverberation of unstruck sound. Sivavakkiyar proclaims that this ecstatic inner roar and cosmic illumination are nothing separate from the all-pervading vibration of Sivayam.

Four questions ask where, and none of them is answered. Inside the great light that has no likeness, where is the thing that became form? In the universe that itself became a likeness, where is what stood as form? Where did the supreme one who is austerity stand bearing it? In the supreme itself, where did water arise and remain? Form, place, and water are all refused a settled spot.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar poses a series of profound non-dual cosmological questions to dissolve the illusion of spatial locality and physical form. Inside the boundless, peerless Great Light (உவமையிலாப் பேரொளி / பரஞ்சோதி) that defies all comparison and boundaries, where could localized, tangible form (உருவம்) possibly exist? In this vast universe that is itself merely a reflection or shadow of the unmanifest, where does form truly abide? Where does the Supreme Lord of pure tapas (தவமதான பரமனார்) stand? And within the absolute Reality (தற்பரம்), how and where did the fluid flux of primordial creation (சலம்) arise and stay? Sivavakkiyar demonstrates that before the infinite expanse of Pure Consciousness, spatial categories ('where?') are completely meaningless; the Divine does not occupy a geographical coordinate, but is the undivided, shoreless ground of all Being.
