The dear ones addressed here are the ones who keep saying five letters and three letters. They are told to look: that substance is neither the five nor the three. The five are then set beside the letter of the heart. Once that letter is known, the five letters take its manner, and the manner is Sivayam. The syllables stay, and the count stops being the thing itself.
The teaching
Transcending external numerology and sectarian squabbles over mantras, Sivavakkiyar addresses devotees who endlessly argue whether salvation lies in the Five Letters (நமசிவாய) or the Three Letters (AUM / Omkara). He warns that the supreme Reality (அப்பொருள்) cannot be circumscribed by any numerical count of syllables. True realization occurs only when one presses this sacred vibration deep into the spiritual heart (நெஞ்சழுத்து) and awakens the primordial seed-letter 'A' (அவ்வெழுத்து)—the primal vowel of pure consciousness. Once this fundamental source-awareness is realized within, the five letters lose their rigid external forms and merge into the self-luminous nature of that source, revealing Sivayam not as an external incantation, but as the living essence of one's own heart.
