The body in these lines is the mute frame that lay through ten months. It is counted in pairs: two hands, two feet, and two eyes with them. The third line is tightly printed, gathering that frame as sound and setting taste and smell beside it as things that shine. What people call the pure body is this same frame the song is describing.

The teaching

With characteristic boldness, Sivavakkiyar deconstructs the physical body to dismantle orthodox obsessions with ritual purity and caste cleanliness. He traces the biological genesis of every human frame: for ten lunar months (ஐயிரண்டு திங்கள்), the developing embryo remains contained within the maternal womb, sculpted entirely from uterine blood and gestational fluids (தூமை). From that very substance, the human architecture emerges—two hands, two feet, two eyes, massed flesh, and the sensory faculties of sound, taste, and odor. Orthodox priests routinely disparage these natural bodily fluids as impure, yet hypocritically venerate the resulting physical form as a 'pure and immaculate body' (துய்ய காயம்). By revealing that all human beings share the exact same humble, biological origin, Sivavakkiyar annihilates all pretensions of caste hierarchy and external sanctity.

A crowded altar is gathered into one name. The seat of the limb-linga, the three letters of the inauspicious mantra, the conch and the discus in the hand, every heaven, the yogis who took a share, the five supreme gates, and the lion-lord's roar are set down as if they could be separate powers. The last line refuses the separation. Nothing in that company stands as other than Sivayam.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar brings all disparate sectarian symbols, rituals, and yogic phenomena into a grand non-dual synthesis. Devotees and ascetics fiercely divide themselves over outward emblems: the bodily Linga-pedestal of Virasaivism (அங்கலிங்க பீடம்), the three seed-syllables of esoteric mantras, the conch and discus of Vaishnavism, celestial heavens, the internal stages attained by accomplished yogis, the five divine portals (the senses and subtle nadis), and the resounding lion-roar of inner mystic sound (சிங்கநாத ஓசை / Nada). The poet declares that these outer forms and inner mystical milestones are not competing realities or separate divinities; they are all merely diverse expressions and modulations of the singular, primordial vibration: Sivayam.

The dear ones addressed here are the ones who keep saying five letters and three letters. They are told to look: that substance is neither the five nor the three. The five are then set beside the letter of the heart. Once that letter is known, the five letters take its manner, and the manner is Sivayam. The syllables stay, and the count stops being the thing itself.

The teaching

Transcending external numerology and sectarian squabbles over mantras, Sivavakkiyar addresses devotees who endlessly argue whether salvation lies in the Five Letters (நமசிவாய) or the Three Letters (AUM / Omkara). He warns that the supreme Reality (அப்பொருள்) cannot be circumscribed by any numerical count of syllables. True realization occurs only when one presses this sacred vibration deep into the spiritual heart (நெஞ்சழுத்து) and awakens the primordial seed-letter 'A' (அவ்வெழுத்து)—the primal vowel of pure consciousness. Once this fundamental source-awareness is realized within, the five letters lose their rigid external forms and merge into the self-luminous nature of that source, revealing Sivayam not as an external incantation, but as the living essence of one's own heart.

A cherished mantra, a body set in place with its auspiciousness, women, children, kin, and the sleep that came as confusion are all laid to one side. The question cuts through the list. What entered and hid? What stood having become everything, everywhere? The singer asks the lord for the place where the light entered and hid. The first line is compressed in the print, body and auspiciousness packed into one phrase, and the hiding place is left for the lord to name.

The teaching

The awakening of supreme gnosis causes the entire scaffolding of worldly life and religious ritual to dissolve into the primordial Light. Cherished mantras, formal Agamic scriptures, domestic attachments to spouse, children, and kin, and the deep hypnotic slumber of worldly delusion (மாயை)—where do they all vanish when transcendental illumination breaks through? Do they disappear into the void, or are they reabsorbed into the omnipresent Divine? Sivavakkiyar directly questions the inner Guru (சுவாமி) to reveal the secret sanctuary where that supreme Divine Light (சோதி) enters and hides. The verse points to the mysterious dwelling of unmanifest consciousness concealed within the spiritual heart, veiled by the illusions of the phenomenal world.

Yogis who have come in numbers are given four questions and a demand for speed. Is the letter without beginning? Is the soul? Are the elements that entered and stayed, and the senses with them, without beginning? Are the fit and plentiful books, and Sadashiva, without beginning? The song stacks the letter, the soul, the senses, the books, and Sadashiva in one challenge, and waits for the yogis to speak.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar issues a daring philosophical challenge to scholarly yogis and theologians, cutting through doctrinal dogma with foundational ontological inquiries. He demands: Is the sacred seed-letter beginningless (அனாதி)? Is the individual soul beginningless? Are the five gross elements and sensory faculties that entered this body beginningless? Are the venerated scriptures beginningless, or is the supreme Lord Sadasiva alone without origin? By interrogating the temporal and causal nature of language, soul, matter, and scripture, the Siddha compels the practitioner to transcend superficial textual debates and penetrate to the uncaused, eternal Source that precedes all cosmic manifestation.

The nine gates of the body are given a last day, a day on which they cease. Against that closing the song sets a name it calls the ninth: Rama, Rama, Rama. On the tongues of hostile people that name comes and is said to stop disease. On the tongues of loving people it settles deep and stays. The name is placed in the mouth, for the day when the nine gates fail.

The teaching

Contemplating the inevitability of human mortality, Sivavakkiyar focuses on the ultimate moment when the nine bodily gates (ஒன்பது வாசல்) cease to function and physical life dissolves. Against this terminal collapse, he invokes the esoteric power of the name 'Rama' (ராம நாமமே). In Siddha yogic science, 'Ra-Ma' is not merely an external mythical name; 'Ra' represents the Agni/solar fire of Pingala and 'Ma' represents the cooling lunar nectar of Ida; their harmonious union at the crown transcends the cycles of time and decay. On the tongues of malicious, deceitful people, holy words are reduced to hypocritical pretense that brings spiritual disease; but in the hearts of true lovers of the Divine (அன்பர்), this sacred resonance settles into the deepest core of being, bestowing fearless liberation at the hour of death.
