These are people who bathe every day so the dirt will leave, and the dirt has not left. The questions are blunt. Where did the dirt remain? Where is the thing that has no beauty? If they can cut the dirt away in the place where it actually sat, then what is without dirt may draw near the light and live. The song follows the dirt to its real seat and ties clean life to that cutting.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers an incisive critique of those who obsessively bathe in sacred rivers (தீர்த்தமாடல்) under the illusion that physical ablutions can wash away sins. Day after day, people scrub their skin, yet their inner nature remains heavily encrusted with pride, malice, and ignorance. The poet asks: Where does the true filth reside? External water can only clean external dust; it cannot touch the deep-seated defilement of egoism (anava) and delusion harbored within the mind. If a seeker possesses the wisdom to locate the real seat of impurity and sever it through self-knowledge, the soul is instantly purified, entering into eternal communion with the immaculate, self-luminous Divine (அழுக்கிலாத சோதி).

A human birth is pictured first as a frame massed of atoms and as every many-fold womb, and then as a daze inside a book that was recited and laid by. Out of that daze the singer asks what really perishes and what death is, while one passes through the midst of a word the print leaves compressed, the still realm or the heat of austerity. What thinks? What stands? The command is to think and look. The stored book is the place of the bewilderment.

The teaching

Reflecting on the vast evolutionary journey of the soul, Sivavakkiyar marvels at the rarity of human incarnation. Having evolved through endless aggregates of atomic matter and cycled through millions of diverse animal, reptile, and plant wombs (பல்லியோனி), the soul has finally attained this precious human birth. Yet tragically, humans squander this hard-won embodiment by becoming utterly bewildered and trapped in rigid, man-made scriptural books and theological doctrines. Sivavakkiyar challenges seekers to pause and contemplate the core existential truths: What is birth? What is death? What is the permanent reality that endures through all changing forms? He urges them to look inward and realize the eternal Witness rather than perishing in textual bewilderment.

The one who is the beginning stands past the cosmos, and past that, and past that again, as light, the Soma of the revealed sound. The knowers in this song received him without waiting for a lesson, and recognized him inside themselves. From that recognition the lines draw a plain conclusion and say it twice. The thing called caste difference is absent even as a trace. It is absent altogether.

The teaching

This verse stands as one of Sivavakkiyar's most uncompromising proclamations of radical egalitarianism and non-dual realization. The Supreme Being stands far beyond the furthest reaches of the cosmos, shining as the primordial light—the inner nectar-essence (Soma) of revealed sound (Sruti Nada). The true jnanis (enlightened seers) are those who realize this divine radiance directly within their own consciousness, without depending on orthodox lessons or priestly mediation. Having recognized the singular Divine pulsing within all creation, they perceive that caste divisions (சாதிபேதம்) are completely fictitious, fabricated social delusions. In the clear light of spiritual truth, caste does not exist even to the slightest degree—it is utterly and totally non-existent.

In the primal cause the body has no old age. The next line turns the flesh inward: the tongue is folded into the nose, and the going is along the channel of sound. The third line is compressed. It speaks of a pair, once longing is cut, and of pressing that pair tight if one is able. Looking then has a wide result. Look and look, and every direction is the supreme Brahman.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar unveils the esoteric Siddha practice of Khechari Mudra and Vasi Yoga to conquer physical decay and awaken cosmic consciousness. In the realm of the Primal Cause (ஆதிகாரணம்), the body is freed from the ravages of aging. By curling the tongue upward into the nasal pharynx and cranial vault (நாக்கை மடித்து) and ascending along the subtle sonic channel (Nada Nadi), the yogi transcends worldly cravings and firmly unites the twin breaths of Ida and Pingala (இரட்டையை இறுக்க அழுத்த வல்லீரேல்) into the central Sushumna. When this internal union is achieved, the cranial nectar showers down, and the yogi's perception expands into universal illumination: wherever one looks, in every cardinal direction, the entire universe is directly experienced as the Supreme Brahman (பரப்பிரம்மம்).

One word is struck again and again, and in this song it is the five. Four times it stands in the first line beside whatever stands doing harm. The five is then what sits inside and remains. If you can hold to that five, the close brings it home: five and five have sat within you, and what sat is Sivayam. The word also sounds like fear, so the hammering carries dread as well as number, and the song ends by naming Sivayam.

The teaching

Through the rhythmic repetition of the word 'five' (அஞ்சு), Sivavakkiyar plays upon the double meaning of the fivefold cosmic principles (tattvas) and existential dread (அஞ்சுதல்). Uncontrolled, the twenty-five tattvas—the five elements, five senses, five organs of action, and their subtle counterparts—inflict endless torment (அல்லல்) and entrap the soul in fear. Yet, these very same fivefold principles reside within the body as the sacred foundation of divine manifestation. If the practitioner can master, harmonize, and embrace these energies through focused yogic awareness, fear dissolves, and the fivefold framework within is transformed into the peaceful sanctuary of Sivayam permanently abiding in the heart.

Verse 218

  2. 2Nenjezhuththi ninrugondu niisepippadhu eedhadaa?
  3. 3Anjezhuththin vaaladhaal aruppadhaavadhu eedhadaa?
  4. 4Pinjezhuththin neermaidhaan piriththuraikka veendumee.

The questions are about letters, and they press past the mere reciting of them. What sat and stood as the beginning of the five letters? Standing in the heart's letter, what are you chanting? What does the sword of the five letters cut? The last line asks for the straightness of the tender letter to be separated and told. That tender letter continues the song's play of five-letter and heart-letter, and the song wants its straight sense spoken apart.

The teaching

Moving beyond the mechanical chanting of mantras, Sivavakkiyar demands that the seeker understand the esoteric reality behind the Five Letters. He asks: What primordial consciousness existed prior to the Five Letters and serves as their eternal foundation? What is the true unspoken prayer inscribed in the spiritual heart beyond vocal utterance? With the luminous sword of the Five Letters (அஞ்செழுத்தின் வாள்), the yogi must sever the deep-rooted knots of ignorance, karma, and egotism. He calls for a discerning comprehension of the subtle 'tender seed-letter' (பிஞ்செழுத்து)—the primordial Pranava—which must be extracted from rote ritual and experienced in its pure, radiant simplicity.
