One word is struck again and again, and in this song it is the five. Four times it stands in the first line beside whatever stands doing harm. The five is then what sits inside and remains. If you can hold to that five, the close brings it home: five and five have sat within you, and what sat is Sivayam. The word also sounds like fear, so the hammering carries dread as well as number, and the song ends by naming Sivayam.

The teaching

Through the rhythmic repetition of the word 'five' (அஞ்சு), Sivavakkiyar plays upon the double meaning of the fivefold cosmic principles (tattvas) and existential dread (அஞ்சுதல்). Uncontrolled, the twenty-five tattvas—the five elements, five senses, five organs of action, and their subtle counterparts—inflict endless torment (அல்லல்) and entrap the soul in fear. Yet, these very same fivefold principles reside within the body as the sacred foundation of divine manifestation. If the practitioner can master, harmonize, and embrace these energies through focused yogic awareness, fear dissolves, and the fivefold framework within is transformed into the peaceful sanctuary of Sivayam permanently abiding in the heart.

Verse 218

The questions are about letters, and they press past the mere reciting of them. What sat and stood as the beginning of the five letters? Standing in the heart's letter, what are you chanting? What does the sword of the five letters cut? The last line asks for the straightness of the tender letter to be separated and told. That tender letter continues the song's play of five-letter and heart-letter, and the song wants its straight sense spoken apart.

The teaching

Moving beyond the mechanical chanting of mantras, Sivavakkiyar demands that the seeker understand the esoteric reality behind the Five Letters. He asks: What primordial consciousness existed prior to the Five Letters and serves as their eternal foundation? What is the true unspoken prayer inscribed in the spiritual heart beyond vocal utterance? With the luminous sword of the Five Letters (அஞ்செழுத்தின் வாள்), the yogi must sever the deep-rooted knots of ignorance, karma, and egotism. He calls for a discerning comprehension of the subtle 'tender seed-letter' (பிஞ்செழுத்து)—the primordial Pranava—which must be extracted from rote ritual and experienced in its pure, radiant simplicity.

Verse 219

  1. 1Uyirirundhadhu evvidam? udambeduppu thanmunam?
  2. 2Uyiradhaavadhu eedhadaa? udambadhaavadhu eedhadaa?
  3. 3Uyiraiyum udambaiyum onruvippadhu eedhadaa?
  4. 4Uyirinaal udambeduththa unmaignaani solladaa.

Four questions, and the answer is withheld. Where was life, in the moment before a body was taken? The printed phrase for that prior moment is compressed. What is the thing called life? What is the thing called body? What makes the two into one? The last line summons the true knower, the one who took a body by means of life, and tells that knower to speak. The explanation is asked of someone who has already undergone the joining.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar confronts philosophers and theologians with the ultimate mysteries of consciousness and embodiment. He poses four fundamental existential questions: Where did the soul reside before it assumed this physical body? What is the true nature of life (உயிர்), and what is the true nature of the bodily vehicle (உடம்பு)? What mysterious divine catalyst unites subtle consciousness with gross flesh? The poet refuses to accept second-hand scholastic theories; he summons the true Knower of Reality (உண்மைஞானி)—one who has consciously experienced the descent of spirit into matter and transcended it—to step forward and unveil this profound secret.

These lines are one gesture, and the sentence never quite finishes. A curled letter is set on the face of speech. The root channels go on, having crossed pain and pleasure. A firmly pressed letter is raised inside the fire. The six lotuses are mixed with that movement, and the arrival is the place beyond. The print is compressed, there is no closing verb, and the song leaves you at the threshold.

The teaching

This verse encapsulates the complete esoteric trajectory of Kundalini yoga (வாசி யோகம்). The 'curled letter' (சுழித்தவோர் எழுத்து) refers to the dormant Kundalini serpent and the primal Pranava coiled at the base of the spine. By establishing this sacred vibration at the vanguard of concentrated awareness, the yogi transcends the dualities of pleasure and pain. Channeling prana through the central root channel (Sushumna), the practitioner kindles the dormant inner fire (அங்கி / Agni) at the Muladhara. Ascending through the spine, this awakened fire pierces and blossoms through the six psychic chakras (ஆறு பங்கயம்), ultimately reaching the transcendental cranial space beyond (அப்புறத் தலம்)—the Sahasrara—where individual consciousness dissolves into the boundless light of Shiva.

Three befores, and then a hard word for the gurus. Before form is taken on, there is the sound that life entered. Before the womb bears a child, the body is blood. Before grace is taken on, awareness is the root support. The gurus are told to mark this and know it, and they are addressed as gurus whose qualities will perish. The song asks them to notice what comes before the things they usually discuss.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar challenges worldly gurus (குணங்கெடும் குருக்கள்) whose minds are clouded by superficial qualities, urging them to contemplate what precedes all manifest creation. Before any physical form coalesces, the soul is animated by the primal vibration of cosmic sound (Nada). Before the maternal womb conceives, the physical body is merely uterine blood (சோணிதம்). And before divine Grace (அருள்) is bestowed upon the soul, unconditioned Awareness (அறிவு) already resides as the fundamental foundation at the Muladhara. The poet demands that spiritual teachers comprehend these primordial origins rather than losing themselves in petty dogmas and external ritualism.

The Lord who is everywhere has already entered our body. The questions follow from that. Will he stand there dealing out shares and portions? Going off to some post never brought him near. Is there a split into two, called our god and your god? Apart from the division you keep, the lines find a single truth. Sectarian speech is what produces a second one. His entering the body has already left one truth standing.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar launches a powerful attack against sectarian bigotry and theological divisions. When the omnipresent Lord who pervades the entire cosmos has already taken up His dwelling inside this very human body, how can sectarian teachers presume to divide Him into shares, fractions, and partisan camps? God cannot be monopolized by joining a religious faction or retreating to an isolated post. The poet mocks the petty quarrels of dogmatists who argue over 'our God' versus 'your God.' In reality, there are not two separate truths; the appearance of duality is entirely an illusion created by human prejudice and sectarian division.
