Three befores, and then a hard word for the gurus. Before form is taken on, there is the sound that life entered. Before the womb bears a child, the body is blood. Before grace is taken on, awareness is the root support. The gurus are told to mark this and know it, and they are addressed as gurus whose qualities will perish. The song asks them to notice what comes before the things they usually discuss.
The teaching
Sivavakkiyar challenges worldly gurus (குணங்கெடும் குருக்கள்) whose minds are clouded by superficial qualities, urging them to contemplate what precedes all manifest creation. Before any physical form coalesces, the soul is animated by the primal vibration of cosmic sound (Nada). Before the maternal womb conceives, the physical body is merely uterine blood (சோணிதம்). And before divine Grace (அருள்) is bestowed upon the soul, unconditioned Awareness (அறிவு) already resides as the fundamental foundation at the Muladhara. The poet demands that spiritual teachers comprehend these primordial origins rather than losing themselves in petty dogmas and external ritualism.
