Hari and Brahma are ways the one has become, throughout the cosmos, and the foot that stood in the world is asked whether it is not one. The fools are people who put on a guise and manufacture a difference by saying that it spreads apart. The last line is plain. Look with understanding. Here and there, it is one. The spreading of the world remains one foot, one presence.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar vigorously dismantles the theological discord between Saivism and Vaishnavism by declaring the absolute unity of the Godhead. The one Supreme Reality manifests as Hari (Vishnu) the preserver, Ayan (Brahma) the creator, and the vast cosmic expanse. The sacred foot that grounds and permeates the universe is a single, indivisible foundation. Those who put on sectarian costumes, mark their bodies with partisan symbols, and claim that God is split into opposing deities are nothing but foolish pretenders (வேடமிட்ட மூடர்). Sivavakkiyar urges seekers to cultivate genuine spiritual discernment: look with unclouded awareness—here in the heart, there in the cosmos, in all directions, the Divine is indivisibly One.

Burnt ash is already on the body, and a costume is already being worn. The daily mutter is already under way, begun after the mind has thought it up. The question blesses none of the mantras by name. The mantra that came first, the root mantra, or whichever mantra it may be: in which of them does the Lord come and move? The Lord's movement is what the lines ask for, and the label on the chant is left in doubt.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar challenges the vanity of external asceticism and mechanical ritualism. Seekers smear their bodies with holy burnt ash (திருநீறு), don religious costumes, and recite memorized mantras every day. Yet the poet pointedly asks: In which of these mantras does the living Lord actually move and manifest? Does He reside in the ancient formula, in the esoteric root mantra (Moola Mantra), or in any intellectually conceived syllables? Sivavakkiyar underscores that the living Divine cannot be summoned through cosmetic ash or vocal gymnastics; the Lord animates only where sincere, internal awareness awakens in silent, contemplative communion.

The letters are treated as causes. In the cause of the letter A there are many and many forms. In the cause of U he stood, having taken a shape. In the cause of M the world is what wanders in confusion. In the cause of Si, Sivayam is what grew clear. The print spaces the word for cause, and the sequence stays steady. Multiplicity, embodiment, bewilderment, and clarity are hung on four letters, and the last is the one said to have become clear.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar maps the cosmological projection and spiritual involution of the universe onto the sacred seed-sounds of the Pranava (A-U-M) and the Panchakshara (Si). In the causal letter 'A' (அகார காரணம்), the formless primordial source expands into the infinite multiplicity of manifest phenomena. In the causal letter 'U' (உகார காரணம்), the sustaining power consolidates, allowing consciousness to assume physical embodiment and tangible shape. In the causal letter 'M' (மகார காரணம்), the veil of cosmic illusion (Maya) operates, causing the mortal world to wander in spiritual bewilderment. Finally, in the causal letter 'Si' (சிகார காரணம்), the root of pure Shiva-consciousness awakens, dispelling all ignorance and culminating in the supreme, luminous clarity of Sivayam.

Verse 226

The letters are asked how they died into one another. Did U come into that letter, and did A settle and cease? Did U and M stand one inside the other? Even where the states of Siva gather, the line asks whether they stood matched in rightness. The knowers at the end are those who resemble good nature, which is what the rare word in the last line names. They are told to unfold the matter and speak.

The teaching

Delving into the esoteric alchemy of the sacred syllables of the Pranava (A-U-M), Sivavakkiyar interrogates enlightened seers (ஞானிகள்) on how these primal vibrations interact within the body. He asks how the sustaining power of 'U' merges with the causal source of 'A', and how 'U' and 'M' interpenetrate to maintain the phenomenal universe. When these sacred sonic principles achieve perfect balance and vertical alignment (செவ்வை ஒத்து நிற்றல்) within the central Sushumna channel, the yogi effortlessly reaches the transcendental abodes of Shiva (சிவபதம்). The poet summons true mystics to unfold this inner science of sonic resonance, through which vocal chant is transmuted into liberating silence.

The song counts downward through the numbers the lines themselves give. Five that are the beginning, four that have no beginning, three that are light, two that have no form of their own, and the one that is rightness: in that one, a substance stands full. The close says the beginning-one is the five letters in their ceased, unbound state. The last phrase is packed tight. The counting comes home to the five letters.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar reveals the descending and ascending involution of cosmic reality through a mystical countdown of foundational principles. The five at the beginning are the gross elements and the five faces of Shiva; the beginningless four are the inner faculties of mind and intellect; the luminous three are the sacred internal fires of the sun, moon, and agni in the subtle nadis; and the formless two are Shiva and Shakti prior to manifestation. All of these resolve into the righteous One—the non-dual Supreme Reality that fills and sustains all things. Ultimately, even the conceptual formulation of the Five Letters dissolves, returning the seeker to the unconditioned, beginningless Void.

Each line gives a thing and then takes it back. Nothing exists without the sky, and if it is the sky, the sky is absent too. Nothing exists without flesh, and if it is flesh, flesh is absent too. Nothing exists without the I, and if you draw near, the I is absent too. The last line keeps the pattern only halfway. Nothing exists without the self, and then, in place of a neat erasure, it falters and dances.

The teaching

In a breathtaking display of Siddha dialectics and Advaitic negation (Neti Neti), Sivavakkiyar systematically examines the pillars of existence. Without the expanse of space, nothing can exist, yet when space is deeply investigated, space itself dissolves into the void. Without the physical body of flesh, no experience is possible, yet when flesh is analyzed to its core, separate material substantiality vanishes. Without the witnessing 'I', nothing is known, yet when one inquires into the 'I', individual ego vanishes into nothingness. Finally, without the Supreme Self, nothing can be; and here all negation ceases as the Self reveals Itself as the shimmering, ecstatic cosmic dance (தயங்கி ஆடுகின்றது) pulsating throughout all reality.
