Eight and eight and eight, then seven and seven, then eight and one and three: the count keeps changing, and the one inside it is the primal God. Bowing is tied to feet that are eight, and the manner of standing bowed is the picture. Those who recite the eight letters stand clear of suffering. The line never spells those eight letters. Set against the pile of numbers, that recitation is what loosens pain.

The teaching

Cosmic numerology is synthesized into the liberating power of the sacred Eight Letters (Ashtakshara / ஓம் நமோ நாராயணாய / the esoteric Siddha synthesis of Shiva and Vishnu). The Divine manifests through the eight directions, the eightfold subtle body, the eight forms of nature (Ashtamurti), and the cosmic order. When the seeker surrenders egoic will and bows before the boundless feet of the Primal God, meditating inwardly upon the mystic Eight Letters, the entire knot of existential suffering and karmic grief (அல்லல்) is instantly dissolved. Sivavakkiyar shows that authentic surrender transcends dry metaphysical arithmetic, bringing immediate release from the anguish of mortal existence.

Verse 270

Ten with ten, and seven with nine, open another count. Then comes a land that stood inside the ten and four directions, and the good of gaining that land. A cluster of ten is added. The place that follows is compressed in the print, something like that spot and a great beginning. For devotees the close piles liberation on liberation. One phrase there is uncertain and may set this liberation apart from mere learning, or it may simply press the word three times. The song counts the devotee into release.

The teaching

The complex counts of subtle physiology—the ten vital winds (vayus), ten cranial nadis, and bodily apertures—govern mortal life within the fourteen directions of the cosmos. Trapped within these dense clusters of physical attachments and karmic knots, humanity struggles in vain to attain freedom through intellectual cleverness or ceremonial pride. Sivavakkiyar proclaims with resounding finality: true, irrevocable liberation (முத்தி முத்தி முத்தி) cannot be purchased through ritual bargaining or dry scholarship. It is bestowed solely upon sincere devotees (பத்தர்கள்) who melt in unconditional devotion and surrender to the Beginningless Supreme Lord (ஆதி மால்).

Verse 271

  4. 4Aasaiyaay marakkalaadhu amararaagal aagumee.

Breath comes first. Become the moving breath, make love one, and say what came and stood in the way. The day roams as love, among faults that have good mixed in. The next line is compressed: a shoulder lifted and waving, an anklet, and a you who made that something into nothing. Desire stays, and must be remembered. From that, becoming deathless is said to arrive. Yoga, fault, and longing stay knotted in the print.

The teaching

An exalted proclamation of the Siddha path to immortality through Vasi yoga and supreme love. When the vital breath (வாசி) is regulated and fused with undivided divine love (நேசம் ஒன்றி), what karmic adversary or existential obstacle can dare oppose the practitioner? As the sanctified breath circulates harmoniously through the body, it burns away both worldly merits and accumulated sins, shattering the haughty ego and the boastful swagger of physical pride. By tethering the heart in unceasing yearning to the ankleted feet of the Divine, the yogi transcends physical decay and mortal vulnerability, awakening directly into the deathless, immortal state of the Siddhas

  1. 1Eliyadhaaga kaayamiidhil embiraan iruppidam
  2. 2Alivuraadhu ninradhee agaaramum ugaaramum
  3. 3Kolugaiyaana sodhiyum kulaavininradhu avvidam
  4. 4Veliyadhaagum onrilee vilaindhadhee sivaayamee.

The Lord's place is put on this body, called a simple thing. What stood there without fading is the letter a and the letter u. A light like a flame played in that same place and stayed. In the one that opens into sheer space, what came to fruit is Sivayam. The letters are a dwelling. They remain when God's address is the flesh and the flame has somewhere to stand. The name ripens after a and u have held their ground.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar reveals the breathtaking simplicity of divine realization: the mortal human body itself, humble and fragile, is the chosen sanctuary of the Supreme Lord. Within this physical frame, eternally unfading, reside the primordial seed-syllables 'A' and 'U' (அகாரமும் உகாரமும் / the Shiva and Shakti currents of the cosmic Pranava). At their luminous convergence blazes the radiant flame of awakened consciousness, which expands into the boundless expanse of the Inner Void (வெளியதாகும் ஒன்று). In that vast, unconditioned stillness, the living resonance of 'Sivayam' ripens to full fruition. Liberation is not an exotic attainment in a distant paradise, but an immediate inner flowering within the very vessel of flesh.

Verse 273

  1. 1Anjezhuththum muunrezhuththum enruraikkum anpargaal
  2. 2Anjezhuththum muunrezhuththum allagaanum apporul
  3. 3Anjezhuththai nenjazhuththi avvezhuththai arindhapin
  4. 4Anjezhuththum muunrezhuththum avvumaam sivaayamee.

Lovers of the name are caught dividing it. Some say five letters, some say three. The song tells them to look: that substance is those counts no longer, once it is seen. The order that matters comes next. Press the five letters into the heart, and know that letter. Afterward five and three are both admitted, and both are Sivayam. The quarrel about the number is settled by driving the letters inward. Spoken arithmetic gives way to a name that can hold either count.

The teaching

A sharp, illuminating resolution of the sectarian debate between the Five Letters (Na-Ma-Si-Va-Ya) and the Three Letters (A-U-M / Si-Va-Ya). Sivavakkiyar gently admonishes sectarian disputants who quarrel over numerical counts: that ultimate Reality (அப்பொருள்) is neither five nor three in any literal or dogmatic sense! The secret lies in experiential practice: pressing the sacred syllables deep into the stillness of the spiritual heart and realizing the uncreated vibration behind them. Once that living essence is awakened, all divisions dissolve; the five, the three, and the primal sound 'A' are all realized to be nothing other than the undivided, non-dual essence of 'Sivayam'.

Verse 274

  1. 1Poyyuraikka pogamenru poyyaruk kirukkaiyaal
  2. 2Meyyuraikka veendudhillai meyyarmeyk kilaamaiyaal
  3. 3Vaiyagaththil unmaidhannai vaaydhirakka anjineen
  4. 4Naiyavaiththadhu engolo namasivaaya naadhanee!

Liars have an enjoyment prepared, the enjoyment of speaking what is false, so they have a place. The true have no further truth waiting to be announced, so truth need not be spoken. In this world the singer feared to open his mouth on the truth itself. The cry goes to the lord of Namasivaya: what was it that wasted me? Silence here is fear in front of the name, and the name is asked to answer for the wasting.

The teaching

A poignant, soul-stirring confession of the Siddha's existential burden in a world steeped in deception. In worldly society, hypocrites and peddlers of falsehood flourish, finding fame and profit in preaching comfortable lies, whereas enlightened masters of Truth have no appetite for noisy debate because Truth resides in majestic, self-evident silence. Sivavakkiyar laments that he trembled to open his mouth to utter the radical, unvarnished Truth to an uncomprehending populace. With raw mystical anguish, he cries out to the Lord of Namasivaya: why have You ground me down and caused my heart to wither in this desert of falsehood? It is the tragic cry of the awakened seer who bears the incandescent fire of non-dual wisdom among those blind to the Light.
