Verse 274

  1. 1Poyyuraikka pogamenru poyyaruk kirukkaiyaal
  2. 2Meyyuraikka veendudhillai meyyarmeyk kilaamaiyaal
  3. 3Vaiyagaththil unmaidhannai vaaydhirakka anjineen
  4. 4Naiyavaiththadhu engolo namasivaaya naadhanee!

Liars have an enjoyment prepared, the enjoyment of speaking what is false, so they have a place. The true have no further truth waiting to be announced, so truth need not be spoken. In this world the singer feared to open his mouth on the truth itself. The cry goes to the lord of Namasivaya: what was it that wasted me? Silence here is fear in front of the name, and the name is asked to answer for the wasting.

The teaching

A poignant, soul-stirring confession of the Siddha's existential burden in a world steeped in deception. In worldly society, hypocrites and peddlers of falsehood flourish, finding fame and profit in preaching comfortable lies, whereas enlightened masters of Truth have no appetite for noisy debate because Truth resides in majestic, self-evident silence. Sivavakkiyar laments that he trembled to open his mouth to utter the radical, unvarnished Truth to an uncomprehending populace. With raw mystical anguish, he cries out to the Lord of Namasivaya: why have You ground me down and caused my heart to wither in this desert of falsehood? It is the tragic cry of the awakened seer who bears the incandescent fire of non-dual wisdom among those blind to the Light.

The verse lowers the bar to the ground. Even if people kill one another and make a meal of it, even if they run false theft through the market — the gloss on that word is the shop — a meeting is still offered. If you can join, with love, the Lord the boar goes looking for, then the gods inside you are known. The boar stays an animal that searches. The gods worth knowing are already in you.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar radically extends the threshold of divine redemption, dismantling moralistic self-righteousness. Even if human beings sink to the lowest depths of carnality and violence—cannibalizing one another or engaging in deceit, theft, and exploitation in the bustling marketplace of worldly life—the door to spiritual awakening is never shut. If one can turn inward with fierce, melting love to unite with the Supreme Lord whom even Vishnu as the cosmic boar (வராகம்) burrowed through the netherworlds in vain to find, an instantaneous transformation occurs. On that very day of inward union, all celestial divinities and divine powers are revealed to already dwell within one's own consciousness. Liberation depends not on external moral posturing, but on unreserved, heartfelt surrender to the indwelling Divine.

A mouth climbs inside the fish and speaks illusion, and the first line seems to say that mouth should be left. Its closing word is compressed, so the command is uncertain, while the mouth and the illusion are clear. Stay in that interior and let knowledge be taught, and our Lord, who wants nothing and stands as everything, is what remains. The last line changes the lesson from knowledge to a cutting. The everywhere-lord is what is left once the cut is learned inside.

The teaching

An esoteric allegory of Kundalini yoga and the blossoming of cosmic consciousness. The physical organism, when purged of worldly poisons and sensory toxins (நச்சிலாத பூமி), becomes the fertile ground where the seed of divine awareness is planted through breath mastery. Ascending through the central spinal nadi, this spiritual sprout bursts forth at the crown of the head (உச்சி / Sahasrara) as a peerless, blazing effulgence of pure Light. In that supreme zenith, our Lord—completely free from all worldly desire and attachment (இச்சை அற்ற எம்பிரான்)—stands revealed as omnipresent Reality. He dwells within the very printing-press or matrix of the body (அச்சகம்), severing all karmic knots and bestowing direct, unmediated Self-realization from within.

Verse 277

  1. 1Vayalilee mulaiththanel kalaiyadhaana vaarupol

Weeding paddy that has sprouted in a field is ordinary work. The song sets the world's truth-telling beside that work and asks how anyone is saved by it. What springs up in the heat of separation — the gloss gives the rare word that ache — is called false. Living as one born in hell is the suffering of a country lost. Public honesty and private longing are both set aside. The fever that feels like love is a false crop.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar distinguishes between conventional, worldly honesty and the transcendent Truth of the Siddhas. Just as a farmer must meticulously weed out invasive wild grass that mimics sprouted paddy, seekers must discern authentic spiritual awakening from social pieties. How can worldly moralizers ever attain liberation through mere conventional truth-telling when their lives remain entangled in egoic attachments and social pretension? What springs up from the feverish emotional ache of separation (விரகு) or intellectual passion is merely a deceptive counterfeit of Truth. Living trapped in such emotional turmoil is like being born in hell—an agonizing exile where the soul endlessly suffers the travails of mortal delusion.

The Lord who dances is present. The people addressed are the ones who say over there and over here and then go looking, and they are called sinners for the search. They will not consider the one thing that is already clear. Forest, country, and house are a waste once they are mixed together, and in that mixture a thief has been standing. The command is to run the search inside and look with affection until understanding comes. The thief is the one scattered through every place already lived in.

The teaching

A stinging rebuke to outward pilgrims and temple-goers who project the Divine into distant geographic shrines. Sivavakkiyar calls those who wander restlessly, crying 'He is here, He is there!' spiritual sinners, because they remain willfully blind to the crystal-clear Reality within. Fleeing into dense forests, roaming holy countries, or building opulent domestic shrines is an utter waste of vital energy. The Supreme Lord plays the role of an intimate thief (கள்வன்), secretly hidden right in the midst of ordinary human life. Instead of exhausting yourself in external running, direct your breath and awareness inward through the subtle channels (நாடி ஓடி), contemplating the Beloved with melting tenderness until your true divine nature is revealed.

Verse 279

  1. 1Aaduginra andarguudum appurama thippuram
  2. 2Theedunaalu veedhamum theevaraana muuvarum
  3. 3Niiduvaazhi puudhamum ninpadhor nilaigalum
  4. 4Aaduvaazhin ozhiyalaa thanaiththumillai illaiyee.

Dance, the celestials gathering, that side and this side, the four Vedas searching, the three who became gods, the long-lived element, and the states that are yours: the list is what a person might call real. The last line clears it. Apart from the life of the dance, there is nothing, and the nothing is said twice. The compressed close can mean except for that living, or the impossibility of leaving it. The dance empties the rest of the list.

The teaching

An absolute Advaitic declaration of the cosmic dance of Shiva. Orthodoxy clings to cosmic mythologies: celestial hosts dancing in heaven, speculative realms beyond, the four Vedas endlessly searching without finding, the theological Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra), the everlasting elements, and various existential stages. Sivavakkiyar sweeps away this entire metaphysical catalog with a single stroke: apart from the living, vibrant dance of Supreme Consciousness (ஆடு வாழ்வு), absolutely nothing exists! Creation, preservation, scriptural lore, and individual states are all merely waves upon the ocean of this singular divine dance; beyond it, there is sheer Emptiness and nothing else.
