Weeding paddy that has sprouted in a field is ordinary work. The song sets the world's truth-telling beside that work and asks how anyone is saved by it. What springs up in the heat of separation — the gloss gives the rare word that ache — is called false. Living as one born in hell is the suffering of a country lost. Public honesty and private longing are both set aside. The fever that feels like love is a false crop.
The teaching
Sivavakkiyar distinguishes between conventional, worldly honesty and the transcendent Truth of the Siddhas. Just as a farmer must meticulously weed out invasive wild grass that mimics sprouted paddy, seekers must discern authentic spiritual awakening from social pieties. How can worldly moralizers ever attain liberation through mere conventional truth-telling when their lives remain entangled in egoic attachments and social pretension? What springs up from the feverish emotional ache of separation (விரகு) or intellectual passion is merely a deceptive counterfeit of Truth. Living trapped in such emotional turmoil is like being born in hell—an agonizing exile where the soul endlessly suffers the travails of mortal delusion.
