You haul water from the tank until your arms fail, and the singer asks why you stand there slack. The people addressed have no wetness in the mind and no understanding. If moisture enters the mind and the dirt is cut away, a gentler question follows. The light you held in thought, and you, and I: are we one? Outer bailing exhausts the hands. Inner wetness joins the persons a rite keeps working apart.
The teaching
A moving critique of mechanical temple rituals and water oblations performed with hardened, arid hearts. Sivavakkiyar watches with pity as ritualists exhaust their arms bailing water from temple tanks to wash stone idols, while their inner minds remain completely devoid of the moisture of compassion and spiritual wisdom. External water can only wash surface dirt from flesh and stone; it can never cleanse the deep karmic filth of the soul. If seekers could instead cultivate the living moisture of universal love and tender devotion within their hearts (மனத்துள் ஈரம்), dissolving all egoic impurities, the ultimate Advaitic truth would instantly dawn: the Supreme Effulgence contemplated in meditation, the seeker, and the poet are all eternally One (நீயும் நானும் ஒன்றலோ).
