The light cannot be measured, and it is the universe even down at the atom. If that light becomes your own quality and you mark it within, the line calls the result liberation. What happens instead is muttering inside, finger joined to finger, and the gesture done again. Every day the copper-pot worship bewilders the people who perform it. The rebuke is specific. A vessel and a finger-count stand where a marking of the inner light would have been freedom. The light was already both atom and world.
The teaching
Sivavakkiyar draws a stark contrast between non-dual absorption in the Infinite and the petty mechanics of priestly ritualism. The Supreme Light of Shiva is boundless—infinitesimally smaller than the smallest atom and simultaneously expanding as the entire cosmic universe. If one can absorb this luminous presence into one's own character and contemplate it within the silence of the heart, instant liberation (முத்தி) is attained. Instead, dogmatic ritualists spend their days muttering unintelligible mantras under their breath (முணமுணென்று), counting incantations obsessively on their fingertips, and worshiping inert copper idols and metal pots (செம்பு பூசை). The Siddha mocks this daily self-delusion, demanding that seekers abandon dead metal to realize the living effulgence within.
