Born in water, you still make a rite of water. The singer asks whom you think of while you pour all that water into distress. The word for the place of pouring is tight. It reads as calamity, and it sits where a funeral pouring would sit. Then the instruction changes: think of the root, the art, and what sprouts in the seed. If that excellence is held in mind, Siva's state is reached.

The teaching

The Siddha exposes the irony of humans who, having been conceived and gestated in the amniotic waters of the womb, spend their adult lives performing mechanical water rites, libations, and funeral oblations. Sivavakkiyar asks with biting urgency: toward whom are you directing these thoughts while wasting precious water and vital breath in distressful, futile rituals? Rather than pouring water onto external earth, the seeker must meditate upon the root of life (the Muladhara), contemplate the primordial spiritual seed (the seed-syllables of the mantra), and realize the magnificent sprout of divine Consciousness blossoming from that inner source. By attuning to this living internal origin, one effortlessly reaches the immortal state of Shiva (சிவபதம்).

A gate matching ten holds a root letter, crooked and spread. Liberation and special powers are called a tangle, spoken by the root that moves. A churning mind and the five senses stand beside a dance made into a great show. The word for that show is compressed and may also mean a makara-dance. The last dwelling is inside the people of that place, and what is set firm there is Sivayam. The ripened name lives in persons.

The teaching

An esoteric exposition of bodily portals, subtle Kundalini movement, and liberation. The human organism possesses ten apertures (பத்தொடொத்த வாசல்), through which vital energies circulate, anchored by the foundational root-letter (மூல அக்கரம்) at the base of the spine. When the primal root energy surges, conventional notions of liberation (mukti) and occult powers (siddhi) are recognized as mere dualistic entanglements (தொந்தம்). Though the intoxicated mind and the five turbulent senses stage a chaotic, dramatic dance like churning sea-monsters, the living truth remains steadfast: within the awakened beings of Kanchi (அத்தியூரர்) and within every realized heart, the sacred name 'Sivayam' stands eternally established as peace and transcendence.

Verse 285

  1. 1Anuvinodum andamaay alavidaadha sodhiyaik
  2. 2Kunamadhaagi ummulee kuriththirukkil muththiyaam

  4. 4Thinandhinam mayakkuviir sembupuusai panniyee.

The light cannot be measured, and it is the universe even down at the atom. If that light becomes your own quality and you mark it within, the line calls the result liberation. What happens instead is muttering inside, finger joined to finger, and the gesture done again. Every day the copper-pot worship bewilders the people who perform it. The rebuke is specific. A vessel and a finger-count stand where a marking of the inner light would have been freedom. The light was already both atom and world.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar draws a stark contrast between non-dual absorption in the Infinite and the petty mechanics of priestly ritualism. The Supreme Light of Shiva is boundless—infinitesimally smaller than the smallest atom and simultaneously expanding as the entire cosmic universe. If one can absorb this luminous presence into one's own character and contemplate it within the silence of the heart, instant liberation (முத்தி) is attained. Instead, dogmatic ritualists spend their days muttering unintelligible mantras under their breath (முணமுணென்று), counting incantations obsessively on their fingertips, and worshiping inert copper idols and metal pots (செம்பு பூசை). The Siddha mocks this daily self-delusion, demanding that seekers abandon dead metal to realize the living effulgence within.

Verse 286

Before anyone comes face to face with the root letter, everything prior is in the way. A fool covers things foolishly, and the line throws the name fool, then a lame one, with a mark printed before that last word. If the five elements, here identified with Death, contract into the five, two questions follow. Will that join the temple? Will it join what has no beginning? The temple is the boast the song doubts. Contraction of the elements is asked whether it arrives anywhere a shrine could claim.

The teaching

A piercing inquiry into the nature of spiritual awakening and physical dissolution. Before the seeker comes face-to-face with the primordial root-letter (மூலமான அக்கரம் / the primal sound of the Muladhara), spiritual ignorance covers the mind like a thick, paralyzing veil. Sivavakkiyar scolds the spiritually crippled (முடரே) who remain complacent in their blindness. When the five physical elements—which constitute the very instrument of Death (காலன்)—finally collapse and dissolve back into their subtle origins, where will the departed consciousness go? Will it merge with an external stone temple (ஆலயம்), or will it dissolve into the Beginningless, Timeless Source (அனாதி)? A brick-and-mortar shrine cannot offer sanctuary to a departing soul; only union with the Beginningless Divine grants true immortality.

Verse 287

  4. 4Uchcharikkum mandhiraththin unmaiyee sivaayamee.

A triangle becomes the root and becomes the end, and both are one. That figure then settles as the one letter that was contained. Inside the truth, the true figure shines as the lamp of knowledge. The truth of the mantra one actually utters is Sivayam. Geometry, letter, and lamp move as one motion. The name arrives as what the spoken mantra is, once the figure has been taken all the way in. Uttering and truth meet in the last line, and the meeting is the name.

The teaching

A masterly synthesis of subtle sacred geometry and mantra realization. In the internal temple of the human body, the root triangle (முச்சதுரம் / the Muladhara matrix) serves as both the absolute origin and the ultimate culmination of cosmic manifestation, unified in seamless oneness. That subtle geometric space encloses the single, indivisible seed-syllable of creation. Within the authentic matrix of the body, the Divine blazes as an unwavering lamp of transcendent wisdom (ஞான தீபம்). Sivavakkiyar reveals that the living reality pulsating at the very heart of the chanted mantra—the ultimate Truth behind all sacred speech—is nothing other than the transformative, non-dual essence of 'Sivayam'.

Verse 288

You are like swarms of beetles, and the stain in the mind is still uncut. You are like earrings, and you bathe in the tank. The four-faced one, yours from of old, flies and searches and comes back without a find. What can be seen stays mixed in you, and the line says to look. Ornament and a holy bath are the outside of one failure. Searching, even by that god, misses what is mixed into the searcher.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar addresses humanity comfortable in physical luxury and domestic complacency: what power do your recited mantras hold while you remain trapped in the perishable mansion of the physical body (மாளிகைக்குள் வாழ்பவா)? What real use are occult techniques and ritual strategies (தந்திரங்கள்) if they are merely used to suppress sensory impulses through forced control? The Siddha reveals the only path of genuine transformation: when the seeker turns inward and attains the dancing lotus feet of the Cosmic Lord who dances in the celestial ether of the heart (அந்தரத்துள் ஆடும் நாதர்), the mortal ego dissolves. Merging with those sacred feet, the seeker is transformed into the radiant, beautiful embodiment of divinity (சுந்தரச் சொரூபம்), attaining pristine, unconditioned purity.
