Recitation is collapsed into a single letter, and that letter is the One. It proclaims itself as the body called the Veda, and it is not something else. Nada is one. The four-faced one, Mal, and the singer are one. The verse ends on the rightness of having known the one that stands with nothing beside it. Identity is stated, not argued.

The teaching

A stunning declaration of radical Advaitic non-duality and sound mysticism (Nada Yoga). Sivavakkiyar reveals that the ultimate essence chanted by true seers is the single imperishable letter (ஓர் எழுத்து)—the Pranava. This primal vibration is not an external mythological scripture; it is the living cosmic reality embodying all truth. In this transcendent realization, all theological hierarchies and dualistic separations vanish into thin air: the primordial sound-current (நாதம்), the Creator Brahma (நான்முகன்), the Preserver Vishnu (மால்), and the individual self (நான்) are discovered to be indivisibly One. Sivavakkiyar celebrates the supreme integrity of this awakening: directly knowing the Absolute which stands without a second, utterly self-sufficient and free from all external props.

A vision of the guru's aspect, told as a change of substance. An axle is borne as it wells up, in a lotus space. When it settles, the bodily essence becomes a hollow. When that is poured into the fire, forms become light, and a form is taken on the peak. That, the verse says, is the manner in which the guru abides. The guru here is a shape of light, not a person you hire.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar unveils the secret alchemical mystery of the Sadguru not as a mortal human teacher, but as the living inner light of transfigured consciousness. Through Vasi yoga, the central axis of prana (அச்சு) surges upward into the thousand-petaled lotus of the cranial sky (புண்டரீக வெளி). In this stillness, the raw physical essence of vitality (தாது) is refined and channeled through the subtle spinal bore into the blazing fire of Kundalini (அங்கி). As this vital fuel feeds the internal flame, gross material forms dissolve into pure, effulgent radiance. Seated atop the crown of the head (கொம்பு மேல் / Sahasrara) in dazzling majesty, this luminous presence of self-realization is the true form and posture of the divine Guru.

Verse 317

Someone asks where the people of earth and the people of the sky came from. The answer is a list that mixes them as they arise: Nada and bindu blended with earth like light, the Lord together with Sakti, the five and the five elements, and the seven worlds given and destroyed along with the earth, even today. Origin is not a past event. The line says it is happening now.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar shatters theological myths of a static, historical creation event that took place in the distant past. When asked how mortals on earth and celestial beings in the heavens originated, he reveals that creation is a continuous, living reality unfolding in every present moment (இன்றுமே). The primordial sound (Nada) and cosmic light (Bindu) interpenetrate matter just as sunlight suffuses the earth. The supreme Consciousness (Shiva) dances in inseparable union with His dynamic energy (Shakti), continuously manifesting the twenty-five subtle and gross principles of nature and cycling the seven cosmic realms through generation and dissolution. The universe is not a finished relic of antiquity, but an eternal, dynamic dance occurring right here and now within the living body.

The verse is a compressed itinerary, and it ends by telling you to know. A light draws inward. One stood at the navel, one in the middle place, and there is a climbing by the foot that walks. Two stand as if released. Truth comes with the body, and falsity comes too. Next to all of that stands the beginning that stood without a beginning. The line says: know that one.

The teaching

This verse maps the yogic ascent of prana through the subtle chakras. The practitioner gathers the scattered sensory currents into the inward-drawing light (ஒடுக்குகின்ற சோதி). Moving from the vital center at the navel (உந்தி / Manipura) through the middle sanctum of the heart (நடுத்தலம் / Anahata), the life-force climbs along the spinal pillar (காலில் ஏறி). The dual alternating breaths of Ida and Pingala (இருவர்) are released and transcended. In this intense internal pilgrimage where the mortal body's truth and illusory falsehood are laid bare, Sivavakkiyar urges the seeker to recognize the supreme mystery: the beginningless, primordial Source (அனாதி நின்ற ஆதி) that stands eternally intimate, closer to the soul than breath itself.

Verse 319

You are named as the light that stood hidden. The hiding places are the mantra that arose, the letter that contracts, and the sphere held in the mind. The print splits those words with a space, and the sense still runs. Then comes a death. After you have died and remained inside the regarded sphere, what excels in the sphere that laughs is Sivayam. Dying here is inside the mandala, and the next mandala laughs.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a sublime teaching on mystical death and spiritual rebirth (ஜீவ மரணம்). The seeker is reminded that the divine light is not an external object: within the arising mantra, within the dissolving letter, and within the subtle yogic centers, you yourself are that hidden radiance (சோதி நீ). However, this radiant identity cannot be realized while the individual ego reigns. The seeker must undergo the mystical death—dying to worldly desires, intellectual constructs, and personal vanity within the contemplative mandala From the ashes of this egoic demise, consciousness ascends into the 'laughing sphere' (சிரித்த மண்டலம்)—the ecstatic cranial realm of Sahasrara, where Sivaya(ma) shines in unblemished, immortal splendor.

The true guru who was set firm is the one you did not bow to, though that bow would have brought excellence. The verse then turns on a trade. Madman who hands out a guru, can you take what you deal in and swim? The madman who supplies a guru and the disciple who came to acquire one meet the same end. All twelve plights of beaten cotton fall on them. A guru is not a thing to be given and taken.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar launches a blistering satirical assault against commercialized spirituality, pseudo-gurus, and foolish seekers. People ignore the authentic, indwelling Sadguru who alone can purify and steady consciousness. Instead, worldly charlatans set themselves up as spiritual masters, selling mantras and initiation for money and prestige. Sivavakkiyar asks these delusional peddlers: can your traded spirituality actually rescue you from the turbulent ocean of birth and death? Both the mercenary guru who dispenses false teachings and the naive disciple seeking a transactional shortcut meet a pathetic fate: like raw cotton subjected to the twelve agonizing stages of being pounded, threshed, carded, and spun, their spiritual pretensions end in total humiliation and suffering.
