The verse is a compressed itinerary, and it ends by telling you to know. A light draws inward. One stood at the navel, one in the middle place, and there is a climbing by the foot that walks. Two stand as if released. Truth comes with the body, and falsity comes too. Next to all of that stands the beginning that stood without a beginning. The line says: know that one.

The teaching

This verse maps the yogic ascent of prana through the subtle chakras. The practitioner gathers the scattered sensory currents into the inward-drawing light (ஒடுக்குகின்ற சோதி). Moving from the vital center at the navel (உந்தி / Manipura) through the middle sanctum of the heart (நடுத்தலம் / Anahata), the life-force climbs along the spinal pillar (காலில் ஏறி). The dual alternating breaths of Ida and Pingala (இருவர்) are released and transcended. In this intense internal pilgrimage where the mortal body's truth and illusory falsehood are laid bare, Sivavakkiyar urges the seeker to recognize the supreme mystery: the beginningless, primordial Source (அனாதி நின்ற ஆதி) that stands eternally intimate, closer to the soul than breath itself.

Verse 319

  1. 1Udhiththaman thiraththinum odungum akkaraththinum
  2. 2Madhiththaman talaththinum maraindhuninra sodhinii,
  3. 3Madhiththaman talaththulee mariththunii irundhapin
  4. 4Siriththaman talaththulee sirandhadhee sivaayamee.

You are named as the light that stood hidden. The hiding places are the mantra that arose, the letter that contracts, and the sphere held in the mind. The print splits those words with a space, and the sense still runs. Then comes a death. After you have died and remained inside the regarded sphere, what excels in the sphere that laughs is Sivayam. Dying here is inside the mandala, and the next mandala laughs.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a sublime teaching on mystical death and spiritual rebirth (ஜீவ மரணம்). The seeker is reminded that the divine light is not an external object: within the arising mantra, within the dissolving letter, and within the subtle yogic centers, you yourself are that hidden radiance (சோதி நீ). However, this radiant identity cannot be realized while the individual ego reigns. The seeker must undergo the mystical death—dying to worldly desires, intellectual constructs, and personal vanity within the contemplative mandala From the ashes of this egoic demise, consciousness ascends into the 'laughing sphere' (சிரித்த மண்டலம்)—the ecstatic cranial realm of Sahasrara, where Sivaya(ma) shines in unblemished, immortal splendor.

Verse 320

  1. 1Thiruththivaiththa sarkuruvais siirpera vanangiliir
  2. 2Kurukkodukkum piththaree konduniindha valliiro?
  3. 3Kurukkodukkum piththarum kurukkolvandha siidanum
  4. 4Paruththipatta paadudhaan pannirandum pattadhee.

The true guru who was set firm is the one you did not bow to, though that bow would have brought excellence. The verse then turns on a trade. Madman who hands out a guru, can you take what you deal in and swim? The madman who supplies a guru and the disciple who came to acquire one meet the same end. All twelve plights of beaten cotton fall on them. A guru is not a thing to be given and taken.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar launches a blistering satirical assault against commercialized spirituality, pseudo-gurus, and foolish seekers. People ignore the authentic, indwelling Sadguru who alone can purify and steady consciousness. Instead, worldly charlatans set themselves up as spiritual masters, selling mantras and initiation for money and prestige. Sivavakkiyar asks these delusional peddlers: can your traded spirituality actually rescue you from the turbulent ocean of birth and death? Both the mercenary guru who dispenses false teachings and the naive disciple seeking a transactional shortcut meet a pathetic fate: like raw cotton subjected to the twelve agonizing stages of being pounded, threshed, carded, and spun, their spiritual pretensions end in total humiliation and suffering.

Verse 321

  1. 1Vizhiththagan thudhikkavum vindhunaadha osaiyum,

  3. 3Ezhuththelaam azhindhuvitta indhirasaala veliyilee
  4. 4Yaanumniiyu meegalandha thennadhanmai iisanee.

Praise is left behind while it is still happening. As the opened eye praises, the sound of bindu and Nada, Meru, and the spheres of the universe are already things one has passed. Beyond them is a space of magic where every letter has perished. There the verse asks, of Isa, what nature it is in which I and you have mingled. The question is tender. The mingling is the point.

The teaching

This verse reaches the dizzying heights of transcendental absorption and mystical union. The seeker moves far beyond outer rituals, sensory perceptions, and even the subtle yogic milestones—surpassing the cosmic sound-currents of Bindu and Nada, the spinal axis of Meru, and the myriad cosmic globes. Consciousness penetrates into the boundless, magical expanse (இந்திரசால வெளி) where all letters, dogmas, and linguistic descriptions completely dissolve into silence. In this pristine void of pure awareness, the final barrier collapses: the individual 'I' and the cosmic 'Thou' merge into an indistinguishable, ecstatic unity. Sivavakkiyar breathes a tender, awe-filled question to the Divine: What ineffable nature is this, O Lord, where all duality has ceased to be?

Verse 322

  1. 1Omnamo enrumulee paavaiyenru arindhapin,

  4. 4Uunum uunum onrumee unarndhidaay unakkulee.

Twice you are told to know a puppet. First inside the saying of Om namo, then inside the thought of the sun-body. After that knowing, the verse mimics a boast: I exist and you exist, man, and that fine clan exists, man. The answer is blunt. Food and food are one. Know it inside yourself. Lineage is being laughed at by the sameness of eating.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar radically dismantles the absurdity of caste pride and individual egoism. Through deep contemplation, the seeker recognizes that the human body is nothing more than a fragile puppet (பாவை), mechanically dancing to the cosmic rhythm of the primordial sound ('Om Namo') and energized by the solar fire of prana. How laughable, then, is the proud man's claim: 'I am superior, you are inferior, and my noble lineage (நலங்குலம்) elevates me above others!' Sivavakkiyar levels all aristocratic pretension with an undeniable biological and metaphysical fact: the rice that feeds the prince and the outcaste is the same food, sustaining the same flesh and blood. Look within, he urges, and see that all humans share one common anatomy, one common hunger, and one divine animator.

Verse 323

  1. 1Aimbulanai venravarkku annadhaanam iivadhaal
  2. 2Nanpulanga laagininra naadharukkadhu eerumo
  3. 3Aimbulanai venridaadhu avaththumee uzhanridum
  4. 4Vambarukkum iivadhum koduppadhum avaththamee.

Food given as alms is put on trial. You may give it to people who have conquered the five senses, and the verse still asks whether that gift reaches the Nada who stands as the true senses. Without the conquest, a person only wanders in distress. Giving to the worthless, and the mere handing over, is distress itself. Charity is not allowed to stand in for the victory over the senses.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar subjects ritual charity (அன்னதானம்)—frequently exploited as an easy substitute for genuine spiritual transformation—to rigorous critique. Worldly donors feed self-proclaimed ascetics, naively believing that handing over food mechanically earns divine merit or reaches the Supreme Lord. Sivavakkiyar punctures this illusion: the Lord is the pure consciousness underlying the senses, not an external entity pleased by ceremonial banquets. Furthermore, lavishing food on undisciplined hypocrites who indulge their five senses while donning ascetic garb is doubly harmful—it sustains spiritual parasites and compounds the donor's own delusion. True charity is the internal conquest of one's own senses; without this inner victory, outer giving is merely hollow vanity.
