Food given as alms is put on trial. You may give it to people who have conquered the five senses, and the verse still asks whether that gift reaches the Nada who stands as the true senses. Without the conquest, a person only wanders in distress. Giving to the worthless, and the mere handing over, is distress itself. Charity is not allowed to stand in for the victory over the senses.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar subjects ritual charity (அன்னதானம்)—frequently exploited as an easy substitute for genuine spiritual transformation—to rigorous critique. Worldly donors feed self-proclaimed ascetics, naively believing that handing over food mechanically earns divine merit or reaches the Supreme Lord. Sivavakkiyar punctures this illusion: the Lord is the pure consciousness underlying the senses, not an external entity pleased by ceremonial banquets. Furthermore, lavishing food on undisciplined hypocrites who indulge their five senses while donning ascetic garb is doubly harmful—it sustains spiritual parasites and compounds the donor's own delusion. True charity is the internal conquest of one's own senses; without this inner victory, outer giving is merely hollow vanity.

Verse 324

  1. 1Aaniyaana aimbulangal avaiyummokkugal okkumo?
  2. 2Yoniyil pirandhirundha thunpamikku mokkumo?
  3. 3Viinargaal pidhatruviir meymaiyee unardhireel
  4. 4Uunurakka pogamum umakkenakkum okkumee.

The singer faces people who babble and asks whether their differences are real. Are the five senses that pin a life, and the copies of them, actually the same? Is the sorrow of being born from a womb greatly the same? If you would know the truth, the answer is already in the body. Food, sleep, and pleasure are the same for you and for me. Rank cannot survive that sameness.

The teaching

In an electrifying defense of universal human equality, Sivavakkiyar shatters the foundations of caste hierarchy and social privilege. He directly interrogates orthodox dogmatists: Does a high-born man possess different sensory faculties than a low-born man? Does the excruciating trauma of passing through the maternal birth canal differ between a priest and an outcaste? Branding caste-conscious religionists as babbling fools (வீணர்காள் பிதற்றுவீர்), he points to the absolute biological democracy of human existence: hunger for food (ஊண்), the surrender of sleep (உறக்கம்), and the pursuit of physical pleasure (போகம்) are universally identical for every human being. By establishing that all bodies are born through the same womb and driven by the same primal needs, he demonstrates that artificial caste distinctions are monstrous human fabrications with no basis in spiritual truth.

Running senses, Vedic recitation, and the qualities of gathering pandits are each given a place in letters. The five senses that run contract inside the five letters. The knowers recite the four Vedas they go seeking. The pandits' qualities sit inside three letters. What is then arranged as a dancing puppet is Sivayam. Learning is being folded into a puppet of the name.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar gathers the entire sensory, scriptural, and intellectual apparatus into the subtle science of sacred sound. The five restless senses that incessantly chase worldly objects find their ultimate dissolution and quietude only when gathered into the esoteric Five Letters (Panchakshara / நமசிவாய). While bookish scholars pride themselves on verbally reciting the four Vedas, and pandits congregate to dissect the threefold qualities of nature within the three primordial letters (A-U-M), they miss the master puppeteer. The physical human organism is merely an animated dancing puppet (ஆடுகின்ற பாவை); the invisible, divine animating breath and consciousness moving its limbs from within is none other than the living vibration of Sivaya(ma).

The grammar stays open, and the printed verse is compressed. You are led through a world-wheel into the space of the elemental Nada, then into a wind that rose packed inside a surging lamp-fire. Sun and moon both move at a gate. Someone climbs there after the staff has changed, and the picture stops in a playful space. The verse leaves you standing in that space, with no closing verb to let you out.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar charts the subtle inner mechanics of Vasi yoga and Kundalini awakening. Within the bodily cosmos (புவன சக்கரம்) and the subtle vibrational sky of inner sound (பூத நாத வெளி), the practitioner gathers the vital wind and fuses it with the rising flame of Kundalini (பொங்கு தீப அங்கி). Ordinary mortals breathe erratically through the dual gateways of the solar and lunar channels—Pingala and Ida (தவன சோமர் இருவரும் இயங்கும் வாசல்)—squandering their life force. The accomplished yogi arrests this alternating leakage, switching the pranic current into the central spinal staff (தண்டு மாறி / Sushumna). Ascending this central axis, consciousness bursts into the transcendent, ecstatic inner sky (சரசமான வெளி)—a realm of sublime, playful communion beyond mortal decay.

Breath climbs softly inside the silent five letters, and then enters a sphere of light filled to the measure of the sky. In the span where he and I mingle in the body and enjoy, the verse says what that enjoyment became. The printed words keep a paradox: he too is there, I am not, and nobody is. The union is told as that saying, and the line is compressed. Do not smooth the words into a neater denial.

The teaching

This verse is one of the supreme peaks of Tamil Siddha poetry, capturing the unmediated Advaitic dissolution of the ego in mystical union. Mounting the gentle vehicle of the breath (வாசி) through the silent, wordless resonance of the Five Letters (மவுன அஞ்செழுத்து), the yogi ascends into the boundless cranial sphere of dazzling light (சோதி மண்டலம்). In that sacred sanctuary, the individual soul and the Supreme Lord fuse in an intimate, bodily communion of unutterable ecstasy At the zenith of this communion, the illusion of an isolated individual self evaporates completely. Sivavakkiyar expresses this ultimate non-dual paradox with startling precision: the divine reality remains (அவனுமுண்டு), the personal ego has utterly perished (நானுமில்லை), and all separate identities have dissolved into the nameless void of pure being (யாருமில்லையானதே).

Verse 328

  1. 1Vaaluraiyil vaaladakkam vaayuraiyil vaayvadakkam
  2. 2Aaluraiyil aaladakkam arumaienna viththaigaan!
  3. 3Thaaluraiyil thaaladakkam thanmaiyaana thanmaiyum
  4. 4Naaluraiyil naaladakkam naanum niiyum kandadhee.

A rare art is shown by repeating one pattern: a thing held inside its own sheath. The sword in the sword's sheath, speech in the mouth's sheath, the person in the person's sheath. Then rhythm in the sheath of rhythm, and one's own suchness, and the day in the sheath of the day. What I and you saw, the verse says, is this containment. Mastery is holding, not displaying.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar reveals the esoteric Siddha doctrine of supreme containment and internal restraint (அடக்கம்). Worldly spirituality constantly displays itself through noisy rituals, public piety, and verbose disputations; authentic mastery, however, lies in returning all energy to its source. Just as a deadly sword rests silent and contained within its scabbard, speech rests held in the quietude of the mouth, and the individual soul rests folded back into the supreme consciousness of the indwelling Lord. When cosmic rhythm rests in its origin and mortal time (நாள்) dissolves into the timeless eternity of the present, the seeker masters the rarest of all spiritual arts (அருமை என்ன வித்தை). This profound stillness is not extinction, but the serene, self-contained truth directly realized in the intimate communion between the soul and God.
