A seeing happens, and it is compared to gathering tender coconut water in a red palm: the sweetness is already in the tree, and the work is to take it there. In that way the lord came, entered the heart, and made a temple of it. The next line repeats the arrival and adds the consequence. Once that inner temple is taken, the mouth stays shut before the people of the world. The vision is told as real, and it is kept from display.

The teaching

The intimate, quiet nature of direct mystical vision (தரிசனம்). Just as sweet water naturally gathers inside a tender green coconut without any visible inlet, the Supreme Lord silently entered the poet's heart and transformed it into His living temple. Once this profound inner sanctum is consecrated by the Lord's presence, the mystic falls into reverent silence, having no need to boast, preach, or argue before the worldly crowd.

  3. 3Maarupatta theevarum arindhunokkum ennaiyum
  4. 4Kuurupattuth thiirkkavo kurukkalpaadham vaiththadhee.

Fools are shown at work on an image. They go about it crosswise, polish a gem, carry the bee's leftover, honey told as spit, and pour it on a stone that has been cut. That is worship of a carved god, told so the offering looks slightly foul. Another god, one who differs, looks on the speaker and knows him. The last line is compressed. Read straight, it asks whether the matter is settled by dividing shares, and says what took place is the placing of the guru's feet.

The teaching

A biting exposure of idol worship and ritual absurdity (அறிவு நிலை). Pompous ritualists polish cold stones, gather honey (the spit of bees), and pour it over chiseled statues, imagining they are pleasing God. Meanwhile, the true living Lord looks within and knows the heart of the seeker. External rituals cannot resolve the soul's bondage; only the grace of the Satguru placing his sacred feet upon the seeker's consciousness dissolves ignorance and liberates the soul.

Verse 34

  1. 1Koyilaavadhu eedhadaa? kulangalaavadhu eedhadaa?
  2. 2Koyilum kulangalum kumbidum kulaamaree!
  3. 3Koyilum manaththulee kulangalum manaththulee!
  4. 4Aavadhum azhivadhum illai illai illaiyee.

The questions are rude on purpose, tossed at a man of family. What, exactly, is a temple? What are the tanks? He is then named as the one who bows to both. The correction is short: the temple is in the mind, and the tanks are in the mind. The last line widens that correction into a denial of process. Arising is absent and perishing is absent, said three times. Sacred places located in the mind are kept from being buildings that come to be and fall down.

The teaching

A radical demolition of external sacred geography. Sivavakkiyar challenges the orthodox: What is a temple building? What is a sacred bathing tank? The true temple is the purified mind; the true sacred tank is the tranquil heart. External buildings are constructed and eventually crumble to dust, but the inner sanctuary of consciousness knows neither birth nor destruction To worship the mind as the altar of God is to step into eternity.

Verse 35

  1. 1Sengalum karungalum sivandhasaadhi lingamum
  2. 2Sembilum tharaavilum sivaniruppan engiriir
  3. 3Ummadham arindhuniir ummainiir arindhapin
  4. 4Ambalam niraindhanaadhar aadalpaadal aagumo!

Stone and metal are listed the way a maker would list them. Red stone, black stone, a linga of the red kind, and then the claim that Siva will dwell in copper and in the தராவு as well. That second vessel-word is uncommon in the print; the line's force is that they locate Siva in objects. After you know your own doctrine and know yourself, the verse asks whether the dance and song of the lord who fills the hall come about.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar confronts those who localize the omnipresent Divine within inert physical materials: red stones, black granite, carnelian lingams, copper, or brass idols. He declares that once you investigate your own spiritual doctrines and attain genuine Self-realization (உம்மை நீர் அறிந்தபின்), the Lord who fills the cosmic expanse (அம்பலம் நிறைந்த நாதர்) ceases to be an external idol and reveals Himself as the ecstatic, living dance of consciousness within.

Verse 36

  1. 1Puusai puusai enruniir puusaiseyyum peedhaigaal.
  2. 2Puusaiyulla thannilee puusaigondadhu evvidam?
  3. 3Aadhipuusai kondadho, anaadhipuusai kondadho?
  4. 4Eedhupuusai kondadho? innadhenru iyambumee!

Fools are caught saying puja, puja, while they perform puja. The singer asks, in the very place where puja exists, where the puja has taken hold. Was it the primal puja that took hold, or the beginningless puja, or which puja? He tells them to say plainly what it is. The demand for a location and a definition is the attack. A word repeated with piety still has to be a thing one can point to. Until they can say where it holds, the word stays empty.

The teaching

An unsparing interrogation of external puja. Priests and devotees cry 'Puja! Puja!' while mechanically performing rituals, but Sivavakkiyar demands: In the realm of ultimate reality, where does this puja actually land? Did the primordial unmanifest Source receive it? Did the beginningless void accept it? By demanding the ontological recipient of ritual actions, he reveals that without inner awareness, all external offerings are empty, directionless motions.

Verse 37

  1. 1Irukkunaalu veedhamum ezhuththai aravodhinum
  2. 2Perukkaniiru puusinum pidhatrinum piraaniraan
  3. 3Urukkinenjai utkalandhingu unmaiguura valliireel
  4. 4Surukkamatra sodhiyaith thodarndhu kuudalaagumo!

The Rig and the four Vedas may be recited down to the last letter. Ash may be smeared in heaps. One may babble on. The lord, the line says, stays away through all of that. The condition is stricter than recital: melt the heart, merge within, and be able to speak the truth here. Then the question arises whether one may follow and join the light that does not shrink. That unbounded light is named again, and this time it is tied to truth-telling from a melted heart.

The teaching

Scriptural pedantry and superficial asceticism exposed. Even if one flawlessly recites the Rig and all four Vedas down to their exact syllables, plasters the body with holy ash, and prattles theological treatises, the Lord remains absent. God is realized only when the hard shell of the ego melts with genuine compassion, merging within the inner light, and uttering living truth. Only through this heartfelt dissolution can one unite with the boundless, unshrinking Divine Radiance.
