A long refusal, and then the word subtle three times. He does not praise, does not destroy, does not become a form of maya. He does not slip away, does not rage, through age after age after age. He does not droop, does not stir, does not become pure incense. He does not taste, does not speak. The subtle, the subtle, the subtle. Worship cannot turn him into any of the acts you bring.

The teaching

Through a relentless series of apophatic negations (நேதி நேதி / via negativa), Sivavakkiyar strips the Divine of all anthropomorphic traits and ritualistic projections. The Absolute cannot be cajoled by human flattery (வழுத்திடான்), nor is He an angry deity who destroys in wrath or slips away through carelessness. He does not take on illusory forms (மாயரூபம்), nor can He be captured by the fragrant smoke of temple incense (தூய தூபம்). He has no tongue to crave sensory tastes, nor vocal cords to mouth human words. Beyond all emotional agitations, physical movements, and mental categories, the Supreme Reality abides in immaculate, immutable transcendence. Sivavakkiyar seals this realization with a threefold exclamation: subtle, subtle, beyond all conception subtle

Verse 330

  4. 4Eegameega maagavee iruppargodi kodiyee.

The bliss belongs to a letter that was uttered as a call, the sound the line prints as āki kū. Crores who go about saying yogi, yogi, never draw near, know, and see that bliss. A mind-monkey, pictured as an areca nut, surges, fades, and is here as well. The last line is compressed. As the one, and only as the one, crores upon crores abide. Naming oneself a yogi is not the seeing.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar satirizes the legions of pretentious ascetics who don external robes and boast of being 'yogis' while their minds remain completely unmastered. The sublime ecstasy of the primordial mystic sound ('ஆகிகூ'—the esoteric respiration of prana and the subtle Hamsa resonance) remains utterly hidden from them. Like a restless monkey leaping wildly through areca palm groves (மனக்குரங்கு), their undisciplined mind oscillates between fleeting surges of excitement and dark depressions of dullness. External titles, ash-smeared bodies, and public claims of yogic prowess are utterly worthless. True yoga is the radical stilling of mental restlessness, wherein the seeker dissolves all mental fragmentation and abides unshakeably in the solitary, non-dual expanse of the One (ஏகம் ஏகமாகவே).

Verse 331

  4. 4Kuudi kuudi kuudi kuudi nirpargodi kodiyee.

The crores of the previous verse are now seen searching. People of the world seek the Beginning, crore upon crore, search upon search. The day stretches and passes in vain. Seeking again and again, the body itself grows bruised. Then they gather, and gather, and stand, crores and crores. The verse watches a vast effort that piles people together and does not arrive.

The teaching

In this rhythmic, haunting verse, Sivavakkiyar exposes the tragic futility of mass religious frenzy and external pilgrimages. Millions upon millions of worldly seekers (குவலயத்தோர்) spend their entire lives in frantic external searches for the Primordial Divine (ஆதி). They trudge to sacred rivers, scale distant mountains, and exhaust their mortal frames until their bodies are bruised and withered with fatigue (தேகமும் கசங்கியே). Day after day evaporates in vain striving. They congregate in immense temple crowds, chanting and pressing against each other, mistaking religious gatherings for spiritual realization. Sivavakkiyar's repetitive cadence underscores the relentless, mechanical circling of human delusion: as long as humanity searches outside for that which is seated within the breath, their mass religious strivings will end in collective exhaustion and emptiness.

Verse 332

  1. 1Karuththilaan veluththilaan paranirundha kaaranam
  2. 2Iruththilaan oliththilaan onrumirandum aagilaan
  3. 3Oruththilaan mariththilaan ozhindhidaan azhindhidaan
  4. 4Karuththilgiiyum kuuvumutron kandarindha aadhiyee.

The supreme is described by what he does not have, and the cause of his abiding is that bareness. No intention, no pallor. No seat, no hiding, and he does not become one or two. No woman, no death, and he neither ceases nor perishes. Then the verse turns. The one who bears both the cry and the call in thought is the beginning that was seen and known.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar articulates the pristine, unconditioned nature of the Supreme Reality (பரன்). Transcending all dualities of color (கருப்பு / வெளுப்பு), physical location, and conceptual categories of oneness or twoness, the Divine has no material seat and hides behind no external curtain. Free from gender, birth, decay, and death, the Supreme neither diminishes nor perishes. How then can such an ineffable Reality be perceived? Sivavakkiyar points to the esoteric science of breath: when the practitioner internalizes the subtle sonic vibrations of respiration ('கீ' and 'கூ'—the secret Hamsa / Soham current of Vasi yoga) within their awareness, the discursive intellect dissolves. In that breath-suspended stillness, the seeker directly encounters and knows the beginningless Source.

Verse 333

  3. 3Viidhi viidhi viidhi viidhi vidaierup porukkuvaan
  4. 4Saadhi saadhi saadhi saadhi sagaaraththaik kandidaan.

Four obsessions, each said four times, and each missing the real thing. He debates and does not know the silt. He blows and blows until his light dims and he babbles. Street after street, he gathers the dung of the bull. Caste after caste, he does not see the letter sa. Argument, windy talk, street piety, and caste are one portrait of a man who never meets the syllable.

The teaching

With blistering satire, Sivavakkiyar skewers the four prevailing hypocrisies of his day: empty philosophical debate, counterfeit alchemy, superstitious ritualism, and caste bigotry. The polemical debater (வாதி) endlessly argues theology, yet remains utterly blind to the murky silt of his own unpurified mind. The fraudulent alchemist blows incessantly into bellows, wasting his eyesight and breath until his inner light is extinguished and he babbles in delirium. The blind devotee wanders the streets gathering dried bull dung to manufacture sacred ash, confusing cattle excrement with holiness. And the arrogant orthodox bigot obsesses over hereditary caste distinctions (சாதி), completely oblivious to the sacred seed-letter 'Sa' (சகாரம்)—the primordial syllable of Shiva that dissolves all social rank into the light of pure consciousness.

Verse 334

  1. 1Aanmai aanmai aanmai aanmai aanmaiguurum asadaree
  2. 2Kaanmaiyaana vaadhiruupam kaala kaala kaalamum
  3. 3Paanmaiyaagi monamaana paasamaagi ninridum
  4. 4Naanmaiyaagi naralaivaayil nangumingum angumee.

Manhood is shouted five times, and the people who shout it are called fools. The verse then runs a rhyme away from that shout: seeing, then song, then modesty. A debater's form that consists of sight lasts through age after age. It becomes the quality of song, becomes a bondage that is silence, and stands. As modesty, it is at the door of the hum, yonder and here and there. The boast of maleness is walked down to a doorway.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a sharp critique of patriarchal arrogance and masculine vanity Worldly men puff themselves up with boasts of virility, aggression, and patriarchal supremacy. Sivavakkiyar exposes this machismo as the delusion of fools. True spiritual strength does not lie in brute physical dominance or intellectual swagger, but in the internal alchemy of consciousness. The turbulent ego must be tamed through ages of spiritual maturity, transforming into the sweet melody of divine surrender and the sacred bond of inner silence (மோனம்). Cultivating profound spiritual humility and modesty (நாண்மை), the seeker arrives at the roaring portal of the inner ocean (நரலை வாயில்)—the threshold of primordial Nada—where true, immortal power resides beyond all transient notions of gender.
