Water poured into a pot is set over a fierce fire, and the verse asks where the water went. Did it hide in the pot? Did it drink the fire? Did it hide in the ground? Did the wide sky take it? The questions refuse the obvious places one by one. The last line gives the hiding place that matters: once the mind's illusion is removed, it is hidden in the mind. A disappearance of an element becomes a figure of the self.

The teaching

A profound allegorical inquiry into the nature of consciousness and dissolution. When water poured into a cooking pot boils away over a roaring flame, where did it go? Did it vanish into the pot, did the fire drink it, did it hide in the soil, or did the sky claim it? Sivavakkiyar reveals the hidden mystical answer: just as water merges into the unmanifest element, so too, when the mind's illusions (மாயை) are dissolved, consciousness dissolves peacefully back into its own primordial source within.

Verse 39

  1. 1Paraichchiyaavadhu eedhadaa? panaththiyaavadhu eedhadaa?
  2. 2Iraichchidhol elumbinum ilakkamittu irukkudho?
  3. 3Paraichchipogam veeradho panaththipogam veeradho?
  4. 4Paraichchiyum panaththiyum paguththupaarum ummulee!

Two names for women are thrown down, the parai woman and the panaththi, and the singer asks what either name is. He looks where a caste mark would have to be stamped if it were real: in the flesh, in the skin, in the bone. Is a mark set there? Is the body's enjoyment a different enjoyment under each name? Then he tells the hearer to divide the two and look, inside themselves. The argument sends the reader back into the body.

The teaching

A devastating attack on the caste system and social hypocrisy. Sivavakkiyar confronts the orthodox with visceral clarity: What makes an outcaste woman (பறைச்சி) different from a high-caste woman (பணத்தி)? Does the flesh, skin, or bone bear an engraved stamp of caste? Is sexual pleasure, physical biology, or human sensation fundamentally different between them? He challenges the bigot to look deep inside their own anatomy and recognize that artificial social hierarchies have zero basis in nature or spiritual reality.

Verse 40

  1. 1வாயிலே குடித்தநீரை எச்சில் என்று சொல்கிறீர்;
  1. 1Vaayilee kudiththaniirai echchil enru solgiriir;
  2. 2Vaayilee kudhappuveedha menappadak kadavadho?
  3. 3Vaayilechchil poga enru niirdhanaik kudippiirgaal
  4. 4Vaayilechchil ponavannam vandhirundhu sollumee!

A rule about pollution is quoted back at the people who hold it. Water drunk in the mouth, you call saliva, leftover and unfit. The singer asks whether the Veda crammed in that same mouth is fit to be classed the same way. You drink water while telling the mouth's saliva to be gone. Then come and say the matter in the very manner that saliva left. One rule is to be applied to the water and to the Veda. The verse stands and waits for them to do it.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar uses orthodox notions of ritual impurity (எச்சில் / saliva pollution) to turn ritualism against itself. Priests consider water that has touched the mouth as impure saliva, yet in that very same saliva-drenched mouth, they chew and recite the sacred Vedas! Furthermore, they try to wash away saliva by drinking water, which only mixes with more saliva. The Siddha mocks the absurd, contradictory mental gymnastics of external pollution rules, demanding they explain how such superficial purity can lead to liberation.

Verse 41

  1. 1ஓதுகின்ற வேதம் எச்சில்., உள்ளமந்திரங்கள் எச்சில்;
  2. 2போதகங்க ளானஎச்சில்., பூதலங்கள் ஏழும்எச்சில்;
  3. 3மாதிருந்த விந்துஎச்சில்., மதியும் எச்சில் ஒளியும்எச்சில்;
  1. 1Odhuginra veedham echchil., ullamandhirangal echchil;
  2. 2Podhaganga laanaechchil., puudhalangal eezhumechchil;
  3. 3Maadhirundha vindhuechchil., madhiyum echchil oliyumechchil;
  4. 4Eedhilechchil illadhillai illai illai illaiyee!

The saliva-rule is driven until it covers the religious world. The Veda one recites is saliva. The mantras held inside are saliva. Teachings are saliva. The seven earthly worlds are saliva. The drop that was in the moon, the moon itself, and light are saliva. The last line says there is nothing anywhere that saliva fails to touch, and says there is not three times. If the mouth pollutes what it meets, the singer leaves the reciters no pure remainder to stand on. The excess is the argument.

The teaching

A relentless philosophical reductio ad absurdum on ritual pollution. If speech or origin defines pollution (எச்சில்), then the chanted Vedas are saliva; the inner mantras are saliva; religious doctrines are saliva; the seven manifest worlds are saliva; the generative seed in the womb is saliva; the moon and its light are saliva. In all of existence, there is nothing untouched by primal generation. Sivavakkiyar shatters the fragile, arrogant construct of orthodox 'ritual purity' by proving that the entire cosmos is woven of the same shared substance.

Verse 42

  4. 4Aruppena seviirandum anjezhuththu vaalinaal.

Two states are demanded, and both sit outside ordinary memory. How is one, in all the time before birth? How is one after being born and dying away into the earth? If you cannot say it with a sure mark, you are people without a mark. The last line is compressed and abrupt: both ears, as if cut, by the sword of the five letters. Hearing that never answers the question of before and after is treated as already severed. The five letters arrive as a blade.

The teaching

A stark existential inquiry into what precedes birth and what outlasts physical death. How was the soul before entering the womb? How does it exist after the physical body dissolves back into dust? If scholars cannot answer this fundamental question, their spiritual theories are meaningless. Sivavakkiyar threatens to sever the ears that listen to empty doctrines with the razor-sharp sword of the Five Letters (அஞ்செழுத்து வாள்), demanding direct inquiry into the soul's timeless nature.

Verse 43

  1. 1Ambalaththai ambugondu asangenraal sangumo?
  2. 2Kambamatra paarkadal kalangenraal kalangumo?

Three questions say what cannot be forced. Take an arrow to the hall and tell it to fear: will it fear? Tell the milk-ocean that has no churning post to grow turbid: will it? Will darkness come near a yogi who has left pleasure behind? The first verb is tightly printed, and it pairs with will it fear the way the next line pairs be turbid with will it be turbid. The close is a statement. In the hall of red gold, what has become clear is Sivayam.

The teaching

The unassailable tranquility of the realized yogi and the inner space of consciousness. If you shoot an arrow into the open sky (அம்பலம்) and order it to fear, will the boundless space tremble? If you order the motionless cosmic milk-ocean to become turbid, will it lose its clarity? Likewise, the spiritual darkness of delusion can never touch a true yogi who has renounced fleeting sensory pleasures and stabilized his mind in the golden hall of inner awareness, where Sivayanama shines in pure lucidity.
