Verse 43

Three questions say what cannot be forced. Take an arrow to the hall and tell it to fear: will it fear? Tell the milk-ocean that has no churning post to grow turbid: will it? Will darkness come near a yogi who has left pleasure behind? The first verb is tightly printed, and it pairs with will it fear the way the next line pairs be turbid with will it be turbid. The close is a statement. In the hall of red gold, what has become clear is Sivayam.

The teaching

The unassailable tranquility of the realized yogi and the inner space of consciousness. If you shoot an arrow into the open sky (அம்பலம்) and order it to fear, will the boundless space tremble? If you order the motionless cosmic milk-ocean to become turbid, will it lose its clarity? Likewise, the spiritual darkness of delusion can never touch a true yogi who has renounced fleeting sensory pleasures and stabilized his mind in the golden hall of inner awareness, where Sivayanama shines in pure lucidity.

The siddhas are questioned as if their technical words were unpaid bills. What is mind, what is thought, what is the soul, what is power, what is Sambhu, what is liberation, what is the source, what are the root mantras? Into that list the verse sets one plain claim: the reality asked about is without division of caste. The place they must answer from is a seed that has no seed, and they are told to say, there, what this is. The vocabulary of attainment waits on that seedless seed.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar aggressively deconstructs the esoteric jargon of scholastic Siddhas. What is intellect (சித்தம்)? What is thought (சிந்தை)? What is the soul (சீவன்)? What is power (சக்தி) or Shiva (சம்பு)? What is liberation or root mantras? In the ultimate reality, all these conceptual categories and all caste divisions (சாதிபேதம்) vanish. He demands that practitioners speak from the 'seedless seed' (வித்தில்லாத வித்து)—the causeless primordial void prior to all mental formulations.

Verse 45

  1. 1Siththamatrus sindhaiyatrus siivanatru ninridam
  2. 2Saththiyatrus sambuvatrus saadhipeedha matrunal
  3. 3Muuththiyatru muulamatru muulamandhi rangalum
  4. 4Viththaiiththai iinraviththil vilaindhadhee sivaayamee.

The questions just asked are answered by removal. A place stands with mind gone, thought gone, and soul gone; with power gone, Sambhu gone, and caste-division gone. Release, source, and the root mantras go too. The print's word here is மூத்தி, beside the previous song's முத்தி, and several line-ends are compressed, so the reading follows that list being cancelled. In the seed that brought this and that forth, what has been yielded up is Sivayam. Drawing inward is the reply the questions receive.

The teaching

The sublime state of cosmic dissolution (ஒடுக்க நிலை / Laya). Here, the questions of the previous verse find their resolution through transcendental negation. It is the realm where intellect, conceptual thought, and individual soul-identity cease; where notions of Shakti and Sambhu dissolve; where all caste divisions, paths of liberation, and root mantras vanish. In that uncaused 'seed that birthed all seeds,' all existence effortlessly resolves into the primordial vibration: Sivayam.

Verse 46

  4. 4Saadhipeedham odhuginra thanmaienna thanmaiyo?

Caste is asked to identify itself. All water, once it has gathered, is water. The elements' doorway is one, and the five elements are one. A compressed list then sets ear, sword, karai, wire, and padaga-gold beside one another and asks whether they are one. Taken with the water and the elements, the list is many forms of a single stuff, though the printed items stay tight. The last line turns on the person who recites caste-difference and asks what sort of nature that nature is.

The teaching

Another fierce assault on the artificial cruelty of caste divisions (கிரியை). Sivavakkiyar demands: What is caste? All water, once merged, is simply water. The entrance into physical existence through the womb is identical for all beings, and the five elements composing all human bodies are identical. Gold is one, whether fashioned into an earring, a sword-hilt, a bracelet, or an anklet. How then can human beings rationalize the grotesque absurdity of preaching caste superiority?

Verse 47

  1. 1கறந்தபால் முலைப்புகா, கடைந்தவெண்ணெய் மோர்புகா;
  2. 2உடைந்துபோன சங்கின்ஓசை உயிர்களும் உடற்புகா;

  4. 4Irandhavar pirappadhillai illai illai illaiyee.

Four pictures show what does not go back. Milk that was drawn does not return into the breast. Churned butter does not return into the buttermilk. The sound of a broken conch, and lives themselves, do not re-enter the body. An opened flower and a fallen fruit do not go back into the tree. The conclusion is as hard as the pictures. The dead are not born, and the line says there is not, three times. Irreversible things are stacked, and death is said to be like them.

The teaching

The absolute irreversibility of cosmic and biological law (அறிவு நிலை). Milk that has been milked cannot re-enter the udder; churned butter cannot dissolve back into buttermilk; the shattered music of a broken conch cannot be reconstituted; a departed soul cannot re-enter a dead corpse; a fallen blossom or ripe fruit cannot climb back onto the tree. With unsparing clarity, Sivavakkiyar shatters naive superstitious hopes of worldly resurrection or physical continuity: that which has died is gone forever; only the transcendent truth endures.

Verse 48

  3. 3Praiyarindhu niirpirandha anrudhuumai enriliir,
  4. 4Puraiilaadha iisarodu porundhumaaradhu engnganee.

Purity is shown as a word people use when the moment suits them. When it lay in the room, that day they did not say pure. The day they bathed at the ghat, knowing the bathing place, they did not say impure. The third line is compressed at its first word, printed with a pulled consonant, and on the day water came to be they likewise did not say impure. The verse then asks how anyone joins the lord who has no flaw.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar exposes the hypocritical, opportunistic definitions of ritual purity and menstrual pollution (தூமை). When the child lay in the mother's womb surrounded by bodily fluids, people did not declare it impure. When they plunge into the public river ghats to bathe, they do not consider the water polluted. On the day water was created, they did not call it impure. Yet they invent artificial taboos against natural processes while claiming to be fit to unite with the flawless, all-pervading Supreme Lord.
