Four pictures show what does not go back. Milk that was drawn does not return into the breast. Churned butter does not return into the buttermilk. The sound of a broken conch, and lives themselves, do not re-enter the body. An opened flower and a fallen fruit do not go back into the tree. The conclusion is as hard as the pictures. The dead are not born, and the line says there is not, three times. Irreversible things are stacked, and death is said to be like them.

The teaching

The absolute irreversibility of cosmic and biological law (அறிவு நிலை). Milk that has been milked cannot re-enter the udder; churned butter cannot dissolve back into buttermilk; the shattered music of a broken conch cannot be reconstituted; a departed soul cannot re-enter a dead corpse; a fallen blossom or ripe fruit cannot climb back onto the tree. With unsparing clarity, Sivavakkiyar shatters naive superstitious hopes of worldly resurrection or physical continuity: that which has died is gone forever; only the transcendent truth endures.

Purity is shown as a word people use when the moment suits them. When it lay in the room, that day they did not say pure. The day they bathed at the ghat, knowing the bathing place, they did not say impure. The third line is compressed at its first word, printed with a pulled consonant, and on the day water came to be they likewise did not say impure. The verse then asks how anyone joins the lord who has no flaw.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar exposes the hypocritical, opportunistic definitions of ritual purity and menstrual pollution (தூமை). When the child lay in the mother's womb surrounded by bodily fluids, people did not declare it impure. When they plunge into the public river ghats to bathe, they do not consider the water polluted. On the day water was created, they did not call it impure. Yet they invent artificial taboos against natural processes while claiming to be fit to unite with the flawless, all-pervading Supreme Lord.

Verse 49

  1. 1Thuumai thuumai enrulee thuvandualaiyum eezhaigaal!
  2. 2Thuumaiyaana pennirukkath thuumaiponadhu evvidam?
  3. 3Aamaipola muzhugivandhu aneegaveedham odhuriir
  4. 4Thuumaiyum thirandurundu sorkurukkal aanadhee.

The poor are seen sagging and wandering inside the cry of impurity, impurity. The question that stops them is simple. While the woman they call impure is right there, where did the impurity go? It would have a place if the word were solid. Instead they dive like a tortoise, come up, and recite many Vedas. The last line gathers the impurity itself, rolled into a mass, and says it has become gurus made of words. The teachers of the rule are what the stain has rolled itself into.

The teaching

A scathing defense of women and condemnation of patriarchal taboos regarding menstrual pollution (தூமை). Fools wander about obsessively shrieking about pollution and female impurity, yet when the woman herself stands right before them, where has this supposed 'impurity' gone? These same hypocrites dive into sacred ponds like tortoises, surface, and chant the Vedas, unaware that their dogmatic teachers and word-bound gurus are themselves the real congealed embodiment of spiritual pollution.

Word-guru, body of light, guru of the true body, the worship one happens to want, good guru, the treatises, guru of rites: each title is allowed to finish naming itself. Then the whole set is called one thing. It is purity, clumped and rolled into a ball. Anyone hoping the right kind of teacher would be spared has already lost that hope. The roles are the lump. What had been praised as cleanliness now sits there as a mass you can see.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar mounts a scathing critique of religious commercialization and spiritual hypocrisy. Charlatans and institutional teachers hoard flamboyant titles—verbal masters (சொற்குரு), masters professing bodies of light (சோதிமேனி), gurus of the physical frame (மெய்க்குரு), and self-styled satgurus (சற்குரு) who merely recite scriptures and conduct customized rituals for patronage. The Siddha strips away these sanctimonious robes to reveal that all outer spiritual roles and formal ceremonies, when divorced from direct inner illumination, are nothing more than rolled-up balls of mortal impurity (திரண்டுருண்ட தூமை). True awakening does not consist of peddling sacred jargon or presiding over external ceremonies, but in transcending the physical vessel and its egoic delusions entirely.

The eyes are busy and the mind is not. Something in the hands is being looked at, and the looker stands there blinking. Then it is places, counted and counted again. The turn is blunt. If the mind that has already recognized the lie can be looked at steadily, the rest can be said at once, past the body, inside you. Long searching is treated as a way of not looking. The inside is where the telling gets short.

The teaching

A direct strike against externalized pietism and mechanical asceticism. Sivavakkiyar mocks the hypocritical posturing of ritualists who count rosary beads (கைவடம்) in their hands while blinking their eyes in feigned ecstasy, or who endlessly tally sacred pilgrimage sites across geography without understanding their own minds. The Siddha insists that spiritual realization requires turning the gaze inward to confront the deceitful machinations of one's own mind (பொய்யுணர்ந்த சிந்தை). When the seeker confronts and dissolves the ego's falsehood, transcending body-consciousness (மெய்கடந்து), the supreme Truth reveals itself instantly within the inner sanctuary of the heart, rendering all beads, counting, and external shrines redundant.

The voice changes from scolding to asking. A goat is shown and a tiger is caught. Cattle are shown, and the question is whether a mind will be muddled the same way. A tusk is shown, an elephant is killed and flayed, and the victor who did it is addressed. The plea is to change the bait. Show the house, and bring the speaker out into the open. Every earlier showing is a trick that catches something. This showing is the one he says he still needs.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar employs the metaphor of a hunter's trap to challenge the Divine and lay bare the snares of worldly illusion. Just as a trapper stakes a helpless goat to ensnare a fierce tiger, the world ensnares human consciousness using the bait of material wealth, cattle, and sensory pleasures (மாடுகாட்டி). Sivavakkiyar invokes Shiva as Gajasamharamurti—the conqueror who ripped apart the raging elephant of pride and sensory delusion—pleading not to be trapped by the illusions of maya. Instead of petty worldly entrapments, he demands the ultimate Siddha gift: to be shown the true house of liberation (வீடு) and revealed within the boundless expanse (வெளி) of transcendent consciousness.
