What people call circling is told to be set at the end of revealed scripture, as if walking around a shrine had been mistaken for the Veda's conclusion. Dancing day and night raises a harder question: where is the place that was ever full? Devotees whose devotion has ripened, and the one they place in the supreme, are called a waste. Madmen are asked how anyone can speak once this has been thought through. Outward circling and inward fullness are refused the same name.

The teaching

Orthodox worshipers walk endless circles around stone temples, mistaking external circumambulation (சுற்றும்) for the ultimate conclusion of revealed scripture (சுருதி முடிவு / Vedanta). Sivavakkiyar asks with relentless skepticism: in all this ceaseless circling and dancing day and night, where is the external shrine that was ever truly full of God? When devotion matures into authentic spiritual illumination (பத்தி முற்றி), all conceptual boundaries of worshiper, temple, and deity dissolve into the boundless, silent Void of the Supreme (பரத்தில் ஒன்று பாழ்). The poet confronts these sectarian zealots directly: once the mind has dissolved into that fathomless, attribute-free Expanse, what remaining words could possibly describe that which is beyond all utterance?

Verse 411

  1. 1Engnganee vilakkadharku eetravaaru ninrudhaan

  3. 3Angnganee irundharulum aadhiyaana tharparam
  4. 4Singamanmi yaanaipolath thirimalangal atravee.

How a thing stands, so that it can be shown, is itself the puzzle. If those dear to the Lord are truly said to have risen in grace, then the beginningless Supreme abides in grace in that same way. The last image is of force lost: the three impurities depart as an elephant departs its pride when it has come near a lion. Grace is not a feeling added to a person. It is the way the primal one already remains, and those three stains do not survive the nearness.

The teaching

Just as a flame naturally illuminates according to the purity of its wick and oil, the beginningless Supreme (தற்பரம்) abides effortlessly within consciousness as self-luminous Grace. To illustrate the transformative power of this divine presence, Sivavakkiyar employs a majestic Siddha simile: just as a massive, rutting elephant instantly loses its arrogance and flees in terror when approaching a mighty lion (சிங்கம் அண்மி யானை போல), so too do the three primordial impurities (திரிமலங்கள் — egoism, binding action, and illusion) instantly disintegrate before the dawn of indwelling divine awareness. Spiritual liberation is not achieved through agonizing moral struggle, but through drawing near to the inner Lion of Consciousness, before whom all cosmic bondages naturally vanish.

Temple labor is listed without praise. An interior is swept and smeared, a great lamp is set, and the dawn worship is performed as a pretense. Good austerity is granted, and so is seeking the feet of the One Lord, and still the verse turns. The closing phrase is compressed in the print, but it tells the hearer to see this learned teaching inside the body. Work on a floor and a lamp is not called wicked. It is shown as work that never became inward sight.

The teaching

An unsparing critique of ostentatious temple ritualism and outward cleanliness. Temple priests and devotees meticulously sweep the stone floors, polish the altars with cow dung, kindle rows of oil lamps, and perform elaborate dawn worship services (ப்ரவாத பூசை) for public display, flattering themselves that they are performing great austerities. Sivavakkiyar emphasizes that these external acts of service (சரியை / Charya) are merely symbolic parables. The true sanctuary that must be swept clean of accumulated debris and anointed with devotion is the inner chamber of the heart (உள் அகம்), and the only lamp that truly dispels darkness is the flame of internal wisdom. Seekers must see through the theatricality of physical temple maintenance and realize this inner purification within their own living consciousness.

Verse 413

  3. 3Vaarththaiyaanadhu ambalam vanniyaanadhu ambalam
  4. 4Siitramaavadhu ambalam thelindhadhee sivaayamee.

The hall is named again, this time by what happens in it. What stood and watched is the hall, and so is the hall where the supreme one dances. The dance that stood, the dreadful, the spoken word, fire, and wrath are each called the hall. What has become clear is Sivaya. Fierce things are not cleaned out of the picture before the mantra is named. Seeing, dancing, speech, burning, and anger share one space, and clarity is what that space comes to.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar explodes conventional, sanitized definitions of the sacred "Ambalam" (the cosmic dancing space). The Hall is not merely a tranquil shrine of sweet hymns; it is the totality of cosmic consciousness in all its dynamic, fierce, and contradictory aspects. It is the silent witness that observes (பார்த்து நின்றது), the ecstatic dance of creation (கூத்து), the terrifying abyss of dissolution (கோரம்), the manifest primal Word (வார்த்தை), the consuming inner fire of Kundalini (வன்னி), and divine destructive wrath (சீற்றம்). The Absolute cannot be confined to gentle pieties—It embraces the terrible and the sublime alike. When the seeker's awareness expands to synthesize these terrifying and wondrous cosmic energies, all dualistic conflicts dissolve, revealing the unified, clarified truth of Sivaya.

Verse 414

  1. 1Senru senru idandhorum sirandhasembon ambalam

  3. 3Enrum enrum iruppadhor irudhiyaana ambalam
  4. 4Onri onri ninradhul onindhadhee sivaayamee.

Place and time are both refused as limits. Go on to every spot, and the excellent hall of red gold is there. It stood yesterday and today, and it is without beginning. It remains for ever and ever, and it is the end. Inside what stood by joining and joining, the printed ஒனிந்ததே, what lay hidden there, is Sivaya. The hall is not a shrine reached by travel. Beginning and end are both given to it, and the mantra is what lies in the joining.

The teaching

The resplendent Golden Hall (செம்பொன் அம்பலம்) is not a physical monument located in a single geographical town. Wherever the awakened seeker turns, in every dimension and particle of space, this immaculate Hall of Consciousness is fully present. It is beyond the tyranny of time—it stood before the dawn of the universe (அனாதி), endures throughout the present, and remains as the ultimate reality when all forms dissolve. By continuously aligning and merging the inward breath and focused attention with this timeless presence (ஒன்றி ஒன்றி நின்று), the seeker discovers that which has been secretly veiled within the heart: the self-effulgent, all-pervading vibration of Sivaya.

Verse 415

  4. 4Endhainii iraivannii ennai aanda iisanee.

The address turns tender and leaves nothing out. Father, right order, and every deity are you. So are the stream, the clarity, and attainment and liberation themselves. So are the bindu, the ripening, and the Veda as what stands above. The last line comes close: my father, the Lord, the Isa who ruled me. Nothing in the list is offered as a figure to decode later. One person is being named as law, seed, scripture, and release, and then spoken to directly.

The teaching

A majestic, intimate hymn of Advaitic surrender and universal identification. Sivavakkiyar addresses the indwelling Lord not as a distant mythological monarch, but as the totality of existence: He is the loving father, the cosmic moral law (தருமம்), all celestial deities, the flowing river of life, the clarity of spiritual intuition, occult mastery (சித்தி), and final liberation (முத்தி). He is the primordial seed of creation (விந்து), the cosmic harvest of all experiences (விளைவு), and the transcendent truth soaring beyond scriptural verses. Transcending dry intellectual negation, the poet rejoices in an unbroken relationship of love: the Divine is the eternal Parent, Sovereign, and Supreme Master who has intimately conquered and possessed the seeker from within.
