Three places are demanded, all of them before the usual story starts. Before conception, where did the body stand. Before form was taken up, where did the breath stand. In a mind packed with delusion, where did the confusion stand. Knowers who have understood desire are told to set the answer out at length.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar propounds three profound existential and metaphysical questions to puncture the arrogance of dogmatic theologians. He demands to know where the physical body existed prior to conception, where the vital breath was anchored before physical form crystallized, and where delusion itself resided before taking over the human mind. By pushing inquiry back to the unmanifest realm before birth and physical existence, the Siddha forces the seeker to realize that the mortal body and its psychological delusions are transient, emergent phantoms. Only the timeless, uncreated Consciousness exists prior to all manifestation.

Verse 458

  3. 3Maruvinaip piravimuunru kaalamum vaguththapin
  4. 4Uruvinaippayan idhenru unarndhagnaani sollumee.

In the womb, seven appearances are taken up as embryo. By the fruit of the two karmas, the good and the bad, a person is born, dies, and mills about. After the birth that leftover karma still owes, and the three times, have been portioned, the knower does not build a system. He points and says this is the fruit that has arrived.

The teaching

The soul traverses the seven classic orders of embodiment across countless lifetimes, relentlessly tossed between birth and death by the twin forces of karma—punya (merit) and papa (demerit). Sivavakkiyar points out that human incarnation within time (past, present, and future) is neither an accident nor an arbitrary decree, but the precise maturation of karmic seeds. The true Siddha Jnani does not construct convoluted theological apologetics; having pierced the machinery of samsara, he clearly discerns the exact workings of cause and effect, urging seekers to exhaust their karmic momentum through internal realization rather than generating new bonds.

Verse 459

  1. 1Vaayilechchil pogavee niirgudiththuth thuppuviir
  2. 2Vaayirukka echchilpona vaaradhenna evvidam?
  3. 3Vaayilechchil allavo niiruraiththa mandhiram?
  4. 4Naayinai arindhapodhu naadumechchil eedhugol?

The mouth is handled as a messy fact. Water is drunk and spat so saliva will leave, and the song asks, the mouth still being there, what path the spit took and where it went. The mantra recited is put back in that mouth: it is saliva. The closing நாயினை is compressed. Against the mouth just named it reads as the tongue, though the same form is the word for a dog. Once that is known, what spit is left to hunt?

The teaching

In one of his most biting satires against orthodox ritualism, Sivavakkiyar exposes the absurdity of ritual purity laws regarding saliva (எச்சில்). Brahmins and ritualists constantly rinse and spit water to cleanse their mouths of saliva, yet they fail to see that the mouth itself is an endless spring of spit, and the very sacred mantras they chant are drenched in saliva as they leave the tongue. The Siddha turns the concept of pollution on its head: bodily fluids are simply natural biological facts, not spiritual defilements. Once the seeker understands the true nature of the tongue and masters the inner consciousness, all superficial notions of ritual purity and contamination collapse into irrelevance.

Verse 460

  1. 1Thodakkadhenru niirvizhath thodanguginra uumargaal
  2. 2Thodakkirundhadhu evvidam? suththiyaanadhu evvidam?
  3. 3Thodakkirundha vaararindhu suththapanna valliireel
  4. 4Thodakkilaadha sodhiyaith thodarndhugaana laagumee.

People who cannot say where anything starts are already falling into water and calling the fall a beginning. The song calls them mutes and asks where that beginning stood, and where the thing they call pure actually is. If the manner of the start can be known and made pure, the light that never began can be followed and seen.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar lambasts superstitious pilgrims who plunge into holy rivers and temple tanks, foolishly believing that splashing water over their physical skin constitutes the beginning of spiritual purification. He calls them spiritually dumb (ஊமர்காள்) and challenges them to identify where defilement truly originates and where authentic purity resides. Water cannot wash away the deep stains of ignorance and ego. Only when the seeker understands the true source of consciousness and purifies the inner life-force can they transcend temporal origins and behold the beginningless, eternal Light of the Supreme.

The Project Madurai table prints this gloss beside verse 462. It explains a word in this song:

A buffalo, as the gloss names மேதி, and a cow, if they mate because they want to, are the picture of a body called caste-difference being put on. The same demand is then made of a man who chants the Veda and a woman the line brands புலைச்சி, an outcaste name. If those two join, speak the manner in which no difference is born. The birth is the argument.

The teaching

With unsparing logical brilliance, Sivavakkiyar dismantles the social myth of caste hierarchy using raw biological reality. If two distinct animal species like a cow and a buffalo mate, the offspring bears obvious physical markers of mixture. Yet when a high-caste Vedic scholar unites with an outcaste woman, the child born of their union possesses the exact same human form, organs, and blood, without the slightest natural marker of caste. Sivavakkiyar fiercely challenges orthodox hypocrites to explain this lack of distinction, proving that caste is merely an artificial, oppressive human construct with no basis in nature or the eyes of the Divine.

Verse 462

Printed in the source at the start of verse 462, this gloss explains a word in verse 461:

The people addressed name clan after clan and plead the case. They are told to seek the plain truth of those clans taken as one mass. What they have seen, the line says, is nothing other than a surplus of seed. The close is compressed: day after day they hunt a laughable way to burn Manu, the name tied to the old code of ranks.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar ridicules the endless disputes and legalistic bickering over caste superiority and noble lineage. He demands that people look directly at the biological genesis of humanity: stripped of societal illusions, every human being—king, priest, or outcaste—originates from the exact same drop of male semen and female ovum in the darkness of the womb. To assert divine superiority based on ancestry while sharing the identical visceral origin is utterly laughable. By exposing this undeniable biological equality, the Siddha incinerates the orthodox authority of the Manusmriti and its discriminatory social stratification.
