Every direction, and then every direction again, and rivers beyond number: people run, circle, and plunge the head. The singer asks who, by that bathing, becomes a pure knower, and he names no one. The address goes to sinners who will not bow, with devotion, at Hara's feet. Without liberation they sink in a wasted hell, they suffer, and they wander. The rivers were trusted as the purification. The line leaves them as the way into that hell.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar questions the efficacy of holy river pilgrimages and ritual water-immersion (தீர்த்த யாத்திரை). Seekers exhaust themselves running across every cardinal direction, circling numberless sacred rivers to plunge their heads beneath the water, yet the Siddha asks: who has ever become a pure, enlightened sage (சுத்த ஞானி) through mere physical bathing? Outer water can only wash dirt from the mortal skin; it has no power to cleanse the deeply rooted stains of ego and ignorance. Addressing those who refuse to bow the heart in genuine inner devotion at the sacred feet of Hara (அரன் பதம்), Sivavakkiyar warns that without internal liberation, their relentless pilgrimages are futile. Failing to find the divine stream within, they merely drift into the desolate currents of endless suffering and spiritual ruin.

Verse 520

Stone, silver, copper, and iron are heated, and the printed word for where they sit is tight, the pans of a scale or the fired place itself. If there you install the many forms of mighty gods and praise them, will trouble end and a great ease be given? You are told to answer. The answer in the song is four times no, and then an oath. By the Lord's own word, it is not so. Praise offered among heated metals receives that refusal.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar launches a fierce, categorical challenge against the casting and consecration of metallic temple idols. Metalsmiths melt silver, copper, and iron, or chisel stone, casting them into fiery crucibles and molds to fashion the diverse forms and weapons of formidable deities. The Siddha directly interrogates priests and worshippers: tell the truth—will bowing before these fabricated metal statues permanently eliminate human sorrow (தொல்லை அற்று) and bestow supreme, everlasting spiritual bliss (பெரும் சுகம்)? Answering his own question with explosive finality, he declares 'No!' four consecutive times, sealing the verdict with an unbreakable oath upon the Supreme Lord Himself True spiritual transcendence can never be cast from molten bronze or carved from rock; it is realized only through awakening to the Formless Supreme within.

Every line of this verse ends in the five letters, the அஞ்செழுத்து of Isan, the letters of Sivaya. This world, and whatever has settled in it, is placed there. What is praised, in a compressed opening word, and every being that moves or stands still, abides there too. The many fitting lives, in their rising, stand in the five letters. Certain true knowledge and awakening stand there as well. The letters are the place the line gives to each of these, one after another.

The teaching

In this majestic ontological hymn, Sivavakkiyar proclaims the Five Letters (பஞ்சாட்சரம் — நமசிவாய / சிவாயநம) as the primordial, all-encompassing foundation of existence. The manifest universe itself was birthed from the subtle vibration of the Lord's Five Letters (ஈசனை ஐந்து எழுத்திலே); within these five mystic syllables abide all animate and inanimate beings (சராசரங்கள்) across creation. The spiritual evolution, sustenance, and ascension of all living souls unfold entirely within the power of these sacred letters. Above all, definitive, undeniable transcendental wisdom and divine illumination (நிச்சய மெய்ஞ்ஞான போதம்) are firmly rooted in this fivefold resonance. In Siddha mysticism, the Panchakshara is not a ritual chant, but the living cosmic matrix and the subtle sound-vibration (Nada-Bindu) pulsating through the chakras, holding the key to universal consciousness and final liberation.

Looking at the sastras again and again is said to make a person blind. With the eyes already ruined, fools still offer a formal praise to the hot one, the sun. The other way is put as a condition you must be able to meet. If you know the vessel and practice silent devotion, then according to the rule everyone becomes pure, and the line closes on thus. Book-looking and sun-praise are the blindness. Silent devotion, once the vessel is known, is the purity the rule names.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar exposes the spiritual blindness induced by excessive scholasticism and mechanical ritualism. Endlessly poring over dry treatises, intellectual scriptures, and academic sastras does not illuminate the soul; it merely ruins inner perception, blinding the scholar with pedantic arrogance. Having ruined their inner vision, these intellectual fools stand outside, mechanically saluting and staring into the blazing physical sun with damaged eyes. The Siddha reveals the authentic path of transformation: one must recognize the true vessel (பாத்திரம்)—the human body and consciousness as the living chalice of the Divine—and engage in the communion of profound, wordless silence (மோன பக்தி / Mouna Bhakti). Following this esoteric principle (சூத்திரப்படி), every single human being, entirely liberated from caste barriers and academic dogmatism, is instantly purified and illuminated.

Verse 523

  4. 4Inamadhil palarumvaiyum inpam atra paavigal.

They are cattle tied at a post, and the tether is the point, because there is no firmness of mind in them. In anger they gather other people's goods and store them away. Every day they circle the whole town, and the circling is only for a meal. The last line is compressed at the word for the herd, then clear in the judgment: many of them, and the world with them, are sinners in whom joy is absent. Hoarding and hunger sit inside the same animal figure.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a biting psychological portrait of individuals who lack spiritual resolve and inner stability (மனவுறுதி). Devoid of mental discipline, they are like cattle tied to a hitching post (மட்டிப்பிணை மாடுகள்)—completely subjugated to their animal drives and conditioned habits. Driven by bitter envy and wrath (சினமுற), they plot and hoard wealth illicitly seized from others, yet live in such spiritual destitution that they wander endlessly through the town merely begging and scavenging for their daily feed. Despised and cursed by society as joyless, miserable sinners, their lives are caught in a tragic contradiction of hoarding and begging. The Siddha demonstrates that without inner self-mastery and ethical grounding, external cunning yields only social disgrace, spiritual poverty, and bitter suffering.

Verse 524

  4. 4Sivaayavasi enpadhee irudhalaiththii aagumee.

The text ends on one utterance, repeated until it fills the line. Sivayavasi can be heard as Sivaya and dwell, and even to say it and chant it is the condition every line sets. The first line names all this world and leaves the clause open. Chant it, and everything becomes attainment. Chant it, and one may rule the sky. The last line adds no further prize. The saying itself becomes a two-headed fire, and the song stops on that fire.

The teaching

In this magnificent, culminating masterpiece of the entire work, Sivavakkiyar unveils the supreme esoteric secret of Siddha mysticism: the sacred mantra Sivayavasi (சிவாயவசி). In the esoteric science of Vasi Yoga, the sacred breath (வாசி / Vasi) inverted becomes Siva (சிவா), revealing that the disciplined breath moving through the Sushumna is identical to Supreme Consciousness. Chanting Sivayavasi harmonizes the entire manifest universe (இச்சகம் எலாம்), effortlessly turns all yogic disciplines into supreme spiritual attainment (யாவும் சித்தியாம்), and elevates consciousness to sovereign mastery over the boundless celestial expanse (வானம் ஆளலாம்). Sivavakkiyar crowns the verse with the awe-inspiring image of the 'two-headed fire' (இருதலைத்தீ)—an intense yogic flame burning simultaneously at both ends, symbolizing the unified fires of Ida and Pingala ascending through Sushumna, incinerating all dualities, egoic identity, and cosmic illusion in the single, radiant fire of non-dual liberation.
