After the guard, the singer bows toward a dark face he sets beside the wish-granting tree, so that arts, books, and wisdom may rise in the heart. The tone then drops into a plea. Every name he has learned, the great ones and the small ones, he recites as a man who has become a ghost, and he asks that this fault be borne. Worship and apology share one breath before the teaching grows hard.

The teaching

While ostensibly opening with homage to the elephant-faced archetype of wisdom (Ganesha as the wish-fulfilling tree), Sivavakkiyar immediately subverts conventional pride in learning. He acknowledges that human scholars, whether revered as great masters or novices, merely hoard superficial book knowledge and academic titles. In contrast, when an awakened mystic directly perceives the boundless reality beyond dogma, his uncompromising words sound wild, disjointed, or insane to conventional society—like the raving of a madman or a ghost (பேயன்). The poet's request for pardon is a profound expression of mystic humility: acknowledging that the infinite cannot be neatly codified in mortal syllables, and preparing the reader for truths that will shatter conventional orthodox pieties.

Verse 2

  4. 4Aanaagn sezhuththulee adangalaava lutradhee.

This verse gathers what it names into the five letters. The cosmos and the boundless, the three who stand as the beginning, the sounds A and Ma, and whatever can be contained at all, each line sets them inside that same five. The printed lines space the name of the five oddly, but the sense is containment. Repetition does the proving. Later songs will ask why anyone still searches outside a house this complete.

The teaching

This verse serves as the ontological foundation of Siddha mysticism (அக்ஷர நிலை / the science of primal sounds). Sivavakkiyar asserts that the Five Letters (Na-Ma-Si-Va-Ya) are not an arbitrary religious phrase, but the structural vibration of the entire cosmos. Within these five subtle syllables are encompassed both the manifest universe (அண்டம்) and the infinite unmanifest void (அகண்டம்). Even the classic theological trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra (ஆதியான மூவர்)—are merely cosmic functions arising within this primal resonance. Furthermore, the seed-sounds 'A' (creation/source) and 'Ma' (dissolution/silence) are folded within it. To master and inhabit the Five Letters is therefore to realize that the entire cosmos and all its gods already reside within one's own subtle consciousness.

Just like the previous verse, this song highlights the tragic irony of human ignorance. Sivavakkiyar heavily criticizes people who spend their entire lives traveling to distant lands, climbing mountains, and searching externally for God, completely blind to the fact that the divine light already resides within them.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers one of the most celebrated and scathing critiques of externalized religion in Tamil literature. He exposes the tragic paradox of the human condition: men and women relentlessly wander across continents, scale sacred mountains, and circle countless temples seeking an external God, completely blind to the fact that the supreme divine radiance (உட்கலந்த ஜோதி) is already intimately woven into their very breath and soul. In this exhausting, outward pursuit, youth evaporates, vitality withers, and death claims them before they ever awaken. By repeating the verbs four times in each line, Sivavakkiyar underscores the endless, mechanical repetition of worldly religious striving that has claimed countless millions across generations without granting a single glimpse of the inner truth.

Verse 4

  1. 1Uruththariththa naadiyil odunguginra vaayuvaik
  2. 2Karuththinaal iruththiyee kapaalam eetravalliireel
  3. 3Viruththararum paalaraaviir meeniyum sivandhidum
  4. 4Aruldhariththa naadharpaadham ammaipaadham unmaiyee.

The running stops, and a practice is given. Breath draws inward in the channel that has taken form. If attention can settle that breath and raise it to the skull, the old become children and the body reddens. The verse leaves the result at a pair of feet: the feet of the lord who bears grace, and the feet of the Mother. Those feet, it says, are the truth one comes to when the breath has been lifted.

The teaching

Following his critique of futile outer pilgrimages, Sivavakkiyar reveals the esoteric path of internal yoga (வாசி யோகம் / Vasi Yoga). True spiritual attainment requires withdrawing the scattered prana from the peripheral channels (Ida and Pingala) into the central spinal channel (Sushumna) and, through focused mental intent, raising this fiery life-force up into the cranial vault (கபாலம் / Sahasrara). This internal yogic ascension initiates a total biological and spiritual alchemy: the aging physical form is rejuvenated, cellular vitality is restored, and the body takes on a luminous flush. At this zenith of inner consciousness, the seeker realizes the indivisible union of Shiva (the Father of Grace) and Shakti (the Divine Mother)—not as statues in an external shrine, but as the living, ecstatic ground of their own being.

Verse 5

The verse turns to the body people guard most fiercely, a woman's form taken as one's own. If another man desires her, the holder will not let him go; he says the rival must be cut down first. The caller who comes next is Yama, the middle-one. When that caller summons, this good body, already smelling, is carried only to the burning ground and given to the cemetery worker. Ownership ends at that handoff.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar violently tears away the veil of bodily infatuation and sexual possessiveness (தேக நிலை). In the throes of worldly attachment, a man jealously clings to physical beauty, ready to commit murder if another person merely looks at the woman he considers his possession. Yet when Yama (நடுவன், the impartial lord of death) arrives with his unyielding summons, that very same body—once intensely desired, scented, and defended—instantly becomes a foul-smelling corpse that terrified relatives cannot wait to remove. It is carried to the cremation ground and unceremoniously abandoned to the cemetery worker. Sivavakkiyar uses this gruesome contrast to awaken the seeker from the hypnotic trance of lust and material ownership, pointing toward that which outlasts the funeral pyre.

Verse 6

  1. 1Ennilee irundhaonrai yaanarindhadhu illaiyee
  2. 2Ennilee irundhaonrai yaanarindhu kondapin
  3. 3Ennilee irundhaonrai yaavargaana vallaro?
  4. 4Ennilee irundhirundhu yaanunarndhu kondanee.

Four times the singer speaks of the one that was inside him. At first he had not known it. After he knew it, he asks who else is able to see it. The close is quiet: it remained and remained in him, and he understood. Recognition happens in one person, and the thing recognized is kept from onlookers. The verse offers the fact of that knowing, and it leaves the method unspoken.

The teaching

This verse captures the quiet, ineffable breakthrough of Self-realization (ஞான நிலை). Sivavakkiyar reflects on how the Supreme Reality was dwelling within him all along, yet remained utterly unseen due to the obscurations of ego and ignorance. Once the veil drops and this inner presence is recognized, a profound mystery emerges: it is so intimate, subtle, and self-contained that no external observer can perceive it, nor can it be transferred through second-hand explanation. By abiding continuously in that inner stillness ('என்னிலே இருந்திருந்து'), the seeker stabilizes direct, unmediated knowledge. Realization is not an acquisition of something foreign from without; it is the silent, settled recognition of what was always present at the core of one's own being.
