Four times the singer speaks of the one that was inside him. At first he had not known it. After he knew it, he asks who else is able to see it. The close is quiet: it remained and remained in him, and he understood. Recognition happens in one person, and the thing recognized is kept from onlookers. The verse offers the fact of that knowing, and it leaves the method unspoken.

The teaching

This verse captures the quiet, ineffable breakthrough of Self-realization (ஞான நிலை). Sivavakkiyar reflects on how the Supreme Reality was dwelling within him all along, yet remained utterly unseen due to the obscurations of ego and ignorance. Once the veil drops and this inner presence is recognized, a profound mystery emerges: it is so intimate, subtle, and self-contained that no external observer can perceive it, nor can it be transferred through second-hand explanation. By abiding continuously in that inner stillness ('என்னிலே இருந்திருந்து'), the seeker stabilizes direct, unmediated knowledge. Realization is not an acquisition of something foreign from without; it is the silent, settled recognition of what was always present at the core of one's own being.

Verse 7

  1. 1Ninaippadhonru kandileen niiyalaadhu veerilai,
  2. 2Ninaippumaay marappumaay ninramaayai maayaiyo?
  3. 3Anaiththumaay agandamaay anaadhimun anaadhiyaay
  4. 4Enakkulnii unakkulnaan irukkumaara thengnganee.

The one found within is now addressed as you. The speaker has seen nothing he might think of apart from that you. Remembering and forgetting both stand there, and he asks whether that illusion is itself illusion, a maya named until the name fails. Then the you widens: all, the boundless, beginningless before the beginningless. The last line asks how you can be in him while he is in you. The printed close is compressed, and the sense is that mutual indwelling.

The teaching

The peak of Advaitic non-duality and mystical immersion. Beyond the fluctuating dualities of memory and oblivion, awareness and ignorance, the seeker perceives that absolutely nothing exists separate from the Divine Reality. God is not a distinct being situated in a distant heaven, but the beginningless, boundless infinity that encompasses all manifestation. The apparent mystery of 'You inside me, and I inside You' (எனக்குள் நீ உனக்குள் நான்) completely shatters the subject-object divide of conventional religion, dissolving the illusion of an isolated individual ego into the undivided expanse of supreme consciousness.

Verse 8

  1. 1மண்ணும்நீ அவ்விண்ணும்நீ மறிகடல்கள் ஏழும்நீ;
  2. 2எண்ணும்நீ எழுத்தும்நீ இசைந்தபண் எழுத்தும்நீ;

  4. 4Nannumniirmai ninrapaadham nannumaaru arulidaay.

The you just addressed is now said across the world. Earth, sky, and the seven beating seas are you. Number, letter, and the syllable of a melody that came into tune are you. The eye, the pupil, and the small image dancing in the eye are you. After that roll of names the voice changes and asks a favor: grant the way to draw near the feet that stand as the very nature of approaching. Praise becomes a plea to be let close.

The teaching

An ecstatic vision of divine immanence throughout the cosmos and the human organism. God is not separate from creation; He is the tangible elements—earth, expansive sky, and the surging seas—as well as the subtle architectures of human cognition: numbers, language, and harmonic melody. Most intimately, God is the very seer within the eye: the pupil and the living reflection dancing within it (the witness consciousness). Sivavakkiyar moves from identifying God as the cosmic whole to an earnest prayer for grace, yearning to dissolve into those divine feet that represent the true nature of spiritual communion.

Verse 9

  1. 1Ariyumalla ayanumalla appuraththil appuram
  2. 2Karumaisemmai venmaiyaik kadandhuninra kaaranam
  3. 3Periyadhalla siriyadhalla patrumingal patrumin
  4. 4Thuriyamum kadandhuninra thuura thuura thuuramee.

What those feet belong to is now set past the familiar gods. It is neither Hari nor Ayan, and it is the beyond of the beyond. It is the cause that has crossed black, red, and white. It is neither great nor small, and the singer tells the hearer to hold it, twice. Then he moves it past turiya, the fourth state, and leaves it far, far, far. The verse keeps withholding the thing, even from the highest rung of experience, and still says: hold.

The teaching

A radical transcendence of sectarian theology, mythic forms, and the three gunas The Ultimate Reality cannot be confined to the sectarian identities of Hari (Vishnu) or Ayan (Brahma), nor is it bound by the primordial colors/qualities of nature (Tamas/black, Rajas/red, Sattva/white). Defying physical categories of magnitude or minuteness, it transcends even Turiya—the fourth state of superconscious awareness. Yet Sivavakkiyar urgently commands the seeker to grasp and hold fast to this fathomless reality (பற்றுமின்கள் பற்றுமின்), not through physical hands or intellectual concepts, but through immediate, radical intuitive surrender.

Verse 10

  1. 1Andhimaalai uchchimuunrum aaduginra thiirththamum

  3. 3Sindhaimeevu gnaanamum thinamsepikku mandhiram
  4. 4Endhairaama raama raama raama ennum naamamee.

A long list of religious work is gathered and then reduced. Dusk, evening, and noon, the holy waters where people bathe, the offerings at the day's junctions, austerity, muttered prayer, the wisdom that enters the mind, and the mantra said every day all stand in the list. The verse gives them one identity. They are the name of the father, Rama, said over and over. The name is treated as the substance of those rites.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar boldly internalizes and transcends orthodox ritualism. The mandatory three daily ablutions (Sandhyavandanam at dawn, noon, and dusk), sacred pilgrimages to holy bathing ghats, ancestral water oblations (tarpana), ascetic austerities, and whispered japas are all superseded and contained within the continuous chanting of the name 'Rama.' In Siddha esoteric science, 'Ra-Ma' is not merely an epic figure; 'Ra' is the Agni (solar/fire) seed and 'Ma' is the Soma (lunar/nectar) seed. Their internal fusion in the breath balances the subtle nadis, rendering all external ritual mechanics entirely redundant.

Verse 11

  1. 1Kadhaavupanja paadhaganga laiththurandha mandhiram
  2. 2Idhaam idhaam adhalla enru vaiththuzhalum eezhaigal
  3. 3Sadhaavidaamal odhuvaar thamakkunalla mandhiram
  4. 4Idhaam idhaam raama raama raama ennum naamamee.

Poor people are shown thrashing, each one insisting that this is the mantra and that one is not. Against that scramble the song sets those who recite and never drop it, and says the good mantra for them is the name Rama, again in the words 'this is it, this is it.' The opening calls that mantra one that has left the five great sins behind. The first words of the line are compressed, and the clear claim is the sins abandoned, then the name.

The teaching

A sharp rebuke to dogmatic religionists and sectarian disputants who squander their lives arguing over which mantra is genuine and which is counterfeit. While dogmatists thrashed about in mutual intolerance and intellectual confusion, true mystics anchor their awareness in the unbroken internal vibration that neutralizes the five cardinal sins (பஞ்ச பாதகங்கள்). Sivavakkiyar celebrates the sacred name not as an exclusive sectarian label to divide humanity, but as a universally accessible, living current of liberation that cleanses the heart when recited with ceaseless devotion.
