Verse 116

  1. 1Illai illai enruniir iyambuginra eezhaigaal,
  2. 2Illai enru ninradhonrai illai ennalaagumo?
  3. 3Illaialla onrumalla irandumonri ninradhai
  4. 4Ellaigandu kondapeer inippirappadhu illaiyee.

Poor ones keep declaring that it is nothing, it is nothing. The song asks whether the one thing that stands as nothing can be dismissed with that word. It is not nothing, and it is not merely one: the two stand as one. People who have seen that limit and taken it are not born again.

The teaching

The transcendence of nihilism, naive materialism, and dualism in the non-dual Absolute. Sivavakkiyar reproves spiritual paupers and shallow skeptics (ஏழைகாள்) who mechanically assert that God or Ultimate Reality is non-existent (இல்லை இல்லை) simply because the Absolute cannot be perceived by fleshy senses or grasped as an objective phenomenon. How can one deny the existence of That which stands as the very conscious witness behind all negation? The Supreme is neither a void of nothingness (இல்லை அல்ல) nor is it an objective, quantifiable entity among entities (ஒன்றுமல்ல); rather, transcendent consciousness and immanent manifestation stand indivisibly fused as one non-dual Reality (இரண்டும் ஒன்றி நின்றதை). Those who perceive this ultimate boundary of consciousness cross beyond the cycle of birth and death forever.

Verse 117

  3. 3Maara maara maara maara marangaleezhum eydhasii
  4. 4Raama raama raama raama raama ennum naamamee.

Four drumbeats of sound lead into one name. Kara, kara, the guardian of the watching age; pora, pora, the meritorious one who stood in the war; mara, mara, the one who shot all seven trees, the Sri broken by the line end; and then Rama, five times, the name itself. The verse is a roll of that name and of the acts the lines hang on it.

The teaching

The thunderous incantation of the Taraka mantra and the spiritual conquest of internal obstacles. Through an electrifying, rhythmic cadence of percussive seed syllables (கார, போர, மார), Sivavakkiyar invokes the archetype of the primordial protector who guards the cosmic ages (ஊழி காவலன்) and stands undefeated in the battlefield of life. Esoterically, the mythic piercing of the seven sal trees (மரங்கள் ஏழும் எய்த) signifies the yogic piercing of the seven bodily chakras or the total destruction of the seven foundational layers of karmic illusion. By culminating in the fivefold repetition of the sacred name of Rama, the poet reveals that this sound is not merely an external epic tale, but the vibrant, internal Taraka fire that consumes all mental impurities and establishes eternal peace.

Verse 118

  1. 1Niidupaari leepirandhu neeramaana kaayandhaan
  2. 2Viidupeeri thenrapodhu veendiinpam veendumo?
  3. 3Paadinaalu veedhamum paarilee padarndhadho?
  4. 4Naaduraama raama raama raamamennun naamamee!

Born on the long earth, this body has come to its hour. Once liberation is known as gained, the song asks whether wanted pleasure is still wanted. The four Vedas were sung: did they spread over the earth? The command that remains is to seek your own name, the name that says Rama, Rama, Rama.

The teaching

The urgency of liberation and the radical inwardization of the sacred Name. Having obtained this exceedingly rare human birth upon the earth, the body's allotted time is rapidly ticking away toward death. Once the soul awakens to the supreme imperative of spiritual liberation (வீடுபேறு), can it still chase after the petty, fleeting titillations of the senses? The endless chanting of the four Vedas has echoed across the earth for centuries, yet what lasting transformation did it bring if inner stillness was never attained? Sivavakkiyar urges the seeker to abandon scriptural vanity and turn inward to seek their own true identity, perpetually vibrating with the sweet, liberating nectar of the Rama mantra.

Verse 119

  1. 1Uyirunanmai yaaludal eduththuvandhu irundhidum!
  2. 2Uyirudambu ozhindhapodhu ruupa ruupa maayidum
  3. 3Uyirsivaththin maayaiaagi onraionru konridum
  4. 4Uyirumsaththi maayaiaagi onraionru thinnumee.

Life's good is what takes up a body and keeps it here. When life and body are left, there is form and form. Then the song grows harsh. Life, become the maya of Siva, kills one with another, and life together with sakti, become maya, eat one another.

The teaching

The ferocious, predatory play of biological nature (Prakriti / Maya) and the transience of embodied existence. The soul assumes an earthly body due to the momentum of accumulated karma, but the moment life departs, the cherished physical form disintegrates into empty phantoms. Sivavakkiyar depicts the visceral, cannibalistic cycle of physical nature: life becomes the illusion of Shiva, locked in relentless struggle, while Shakti's creative and destructive energies perpetually devour one another (ஒன்றை ஒன்று தின்னுமே)—where organisms survive solely by consuming other organisms. By laying bare the brutal savagery and perishable horror of bodily entrapment, the Siddha violently shocks the seeker out of biological complacency, demanding that they seek the immortal essence beyond nature's jaws.

Verse 120

  1. 1Nettezhuththu vattamee niraindhavalli yoniyum,
  2. 2Nettezhuththu vattamonru ninradhonru kandileen
  3. 3Kutrezhuththil utradhenru kombugaal kuriththidil
  4. 4Nettezhuththil vattamonril neerpadaan namiisanee!

Long letters, their circle, and a yoni of the filled valli are set out like a diagram. The singer says the one circle of long letters standing as one was never seen. If horn and leg are marked because something is caught in the short letter, our Lord still does not line up inside one circle of the long letter.

The teaching

The transcendence of rigid geometric diagrams, yantras, and linguistic pedantry in divine realization. Practitioners of external occultism and formal Tantra often become ensnared in mechanical rituals—drawing long vowel characters (நெட்டெழுத்து), geometric circles (வட்டம்), and feminine generative diagrams (யோனி / சக்தி பீடம்), while obsessing over scriptural grammar and diacritical marks (கொம்புகால்). Sivavakkiyar boldly dismisses the naive belief that the Supreme Lord can be confined within a geometric drawing, a phonetic glyph, or an external yantric circle. Our indwelling Lord (நம் ஈசன்) completely transcends all physical alphabets, scribal symbols, and geometric boundaries; He can be realized only through formless, experiential meditation within the heart.

Verse 121

  1. 1Vinnilulla theevargal ariyonaadha meypporul
  2. 2Kannilaani yaagavee kalandhuninra thembiraan
  3. 3Mannilaam pirapparuththu malaradigal vaiththapin
  4. 4Annalaarum emmulee amarndhuvaazhva thunmaiyee.

What the gods in the sky cannot know is called the true substance, and our Lord is that substance standing mingled as the very pin of the eye. After birth on earth is cut off and the flower-feet are set down, the great ones too sit and live inside us. The line calls that a fact.

The teaching

The wondrous paradox of the Transcendent Absolute indwelling human consciousness as intimate inner light. The Supreme Reality (மெய்ப்பொருள்) remains completely incomprehensible and inaccessible to the celestial gods in the heavens who seek Him through outward rituals and mythic heavens. Yet that very same Transcendent Lord intimately permeates human awareness—residing as closely as the central pupil or radiant pin of the eye (கண்ணில் ஆணியாக). When the grace of the Satguru severs the relentless knot of earthly reincarnation and implants the luminous flower-feet of divine wisdom within the seeker's consciousness, the Supreme Master takes up permanent residence within the heart. Sivavakkiyar attests with unshakable authority that this inner indwelling is an absolute, undeniable reality.
