Those who recite the four Vedas are told they do not know the step of wisdom. The image for what they miss is ghee mixed into milk: present in the milk, and lost if one looks for it as a second object beside the milk. The one whose throat drank the poison is already within, and still they speak of Yama. The last line cancels that fear. Even in a dream, that death is absent. Inner presence and the death they keep naming are set in one frame.
The teaching
The tragedy of intellectual scholasticism without experiential awakening. Reciting the four Vedas is entirely futile if one has never taken the essential step into experiential wisdom (ஞானபாதம்). Sivavakkiyar employs the classic Siddha metaphor of milk and ghee: just as butter is invisibly and completely permeated throughout milk, the Supreme Lord who consumed the cosmic poison (Shiva) already indwells the seeker's very heart. For one who awakens to this intimate, immortal presence, the dreaded lord of death (Yama / காலன்) is exposed as a complete phantom that has no existence even in a dream.
