A life wrapped up in three or four cloths is compared to bundles hung on a she-buffalo's neck. The image is rough on purpose. Those fools are told that their whole way of living is already finished inside the cloth. Against that small load the singer sets the three and four worlds and the form that has no end. Eating and eating is the only method he allows them, and he asks what truth a meal like that could close.

The teaching

With characteristically biting and earthy imagery, Sivavakkiyar exposes the absurdity of reducing the spiritual life to external dress, social codes, and bodily appetites. He likens those consumed by sectarian pretension and ritual habits to a she-buffalo burdened with crude bundles hanging from its neck—their entire existence petty, mechanical, and bound up in three or four changes of cloth (monastic robes, ritual vestments, or worldly garments). Such deluded minds boast of knowing the Supreme Being (முடிவிலாத மூர்த்தி) who encompasses all the three and four worlds, yet their entire spiritual practice amounts to nothing more than anxiously stuffing and preserving the physical belly (ஊணி ஊணி நீர் முடித்த). Sivavakkiyar scoffs at the delusion that feeding the mortal flesh or wrapping the body in sectarian attire could ever touch the infinite, shoreless Reality.

Verse 152

  1. 1Saavalnaalu kunjadhanju thaayadhaana vaarupol
  2. 2Kaavalaana kuuttilee kalandhusandai kolludhee!
  3. 3Kuuvamaan kizhanariyak kuuttilee pugundhapin
  4. 4Saavalnaalum kunjadhanjum thaan irandhu ponavee!

A small beast-story does the teaching. Four cocks and five chicks, in the manner of their mother, quarrel inside a coop that was meant to guard them. Then an old fox, named in a compressed phrase with the pit, gets into that same coop. The last line does not rescue anyone. The cocks and the chicks die. A guarded house cannot save what spends its safety on a fight.

The teaching

Through a sharp allegorical animal fable, Sivavakkiyar lays bare the fatal distraction of human psychology and the suddenness of mortality. The guarded coop (கூடு) represents the physical body; inside it, four cocks (the four inner faculties / அந்தக்கரணம்: mind, intellect, memory, and ego) and five chicks (the five senses / ஐம்புலன்கள்), mimicking the primordial ignorance of Nature (தாயதான வாறு), spend their precious lifespan in ceaseless internal friction, petty bickering, and sensory strife. But while they are absorbed in their selfish squabbles, the cunning old fox—representing impartial Death (காலன் / Yama) or the pit of mortality—slips into the pen unhindered. In an instant, the four cocks and five chicks are slaughtered; the entire household of the senses and ego drops dead. Sivavakkiyar warns that if one does not transcend internal discord and realize the Self, Death will strike without warning, rendering all worldly strife tragically pointless.

Verse 153

  3. 3பாலனாகி வாழலாம் பரப்பிரமம் ஆகலாம்;
  1. 1Muulamaam kulaththilee mulaiththezhundha koraiyai
  2. 2Kaalamee ezhundhirundhu naalugattu aruppiireel
  3. 3Paalanaagi vaazhalaam parappiramam aagalaam;
  4. 4Aalamunda kandarpaadham ammaipaadham unmaiyee!

A source-tank grows a stand of sedge, and the singer tells you to deal with it at the root. Rise at the right time and cut the four bundles. Two results are offered side by side: you may live as a child, and you may become the supreme Brahman. The verse ends on a hold, the feet of the one whose throat drank the poison, and the feet of the Mother.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers an explicit instruction in Kundalini and Vasi yoga. In the primordial pond of the Muladhara (மூலமாம் குளம்) at the base of the spine, coarse sedge grass (கோரை) has overgrown—symbolizing the tangled weeds of karmic impressions (வாசனைகள்), sensory attachments, and the fourfold mind. The Siddha commands the practitioner to awaken at the dawn of spiritual awareness and sever these four bundles at the root through the fiery ascent of the breath. When this root obstruction is cleared, a miraculous transformation occurs: the yogi attains both the pristine, immortal innocence of a child (the Siddha state of Bala/rejuvenation) and direct identity with the Supreme Absolute (பரப்பிரம்மம்). This liberation is eternally anchored in the ultimate reality of the cosmos: the non-dual union of Shiva—the Blue-Throated Lord who absorbed the world's poison—and the Divine Mother Shakti.

Verse 154

  1. 1Sembinil kalimbuvandha siidharangal polavee
  2. 2Ambinil ezhudhonaadha aniyaranga sodhiyai
  3. 3Vembi vembi vembiyee melindhumeel kalandhida
  4. 4Sembinil kalimbuvitta seedhieedhu kaanumee!

Copper grows a green crust, and that crust is the likeness for a life that still needs fire. The light in question cannot be written in water. A note beside this song calls the beautiful hall the little hall. If you heat and heat, burn, grow thin, and merge above, you come to see the news that the verdigris has left the copper. The work is that burning.

The teaching

Employing the classic Siddha metaphor of spiritual alchemy (ரசவாதம்), Sivavakkiyar reveals how the embodied soul (சீவன்) is transmuted into pure Divine Consciousness (சிவம்). Just as raw copper is naturally encrusted with green verdigris (களிம்பு), the human soul is innately obscured by the three primal impurities (மும்மலம், chief of which is the ego-veil of ஆணவம்). The effulgent Light that dances in the exquisite inner hall of consciousness (the Chidambaram within) is subtle and cannot be recorded in water or grasped by ordinary intellect. To attain it, the seeker must kindle the yogic fire of tapas and breath-control, heating and purifying the inner vessel until worldly desires burn away and the ego thins out to merge in the transcendent realm above When this alchemical fire completes its work, the tarnish of ego permanently falls away, revealing the pristine gold of innate divinity.

Verse 155

The search turns inward. If you can seek and seek within us and see with love, the one who runs out and runs back will settle inside you. That restless coming and going is the breath, or the mind that will not stay. Even Death, who arrived already looking, stands bewildered and leaves. What remains is a stay through vast time. For crore upon crore of ages there is no lack.

The teaching

A sublime revelation of Siddha Vasi yoga and the conquest of death (மரணமிலாப் பெருவாழ்வு). Sivavakkiyar instructs the seeker to search within the subtle nadis (நாடி நாடி) and lovingly behold the Divine residing within the interior sanctum. The restless life-breath (வாசி / பிராணன்), which habitually rushes outward through the nostrils and scatters into worldly phenomena, is arrested through focused awareness and brought to rest within the central Sushumna channel (உம்முளே அடங்கிடும்). When the breath dissolves into internal stillness, the biological timer of mortal decay ceases to tick. Even Yama, the Lord of Death (காலன்), who arrives on his scheduled errand to harvest the soul, stands bewildered and empty-handed, finding no trace of outward breath to seize. Transcending the clutches of mortality, the realized yogi abides without lack across infinite cosmic aeons.

Verse 156

  1. 1Pinanguginradhu eedhadaa? pirakgnaigetta muudaree?
  2. 2Pinangilaadha peeroli piraananai arigiliir.
  3. 3Pinangumor iruvinaip pinakkarukka valliireel!
  4. 4Pinangilaadha periyainpam petrirukka laagumee!

The quarrel itself is the problem. Fools whose discernment is gone are asked what they are fighting about, and told they do not know the great light that never fights, the life-breath. The tangle worth cutting is the pair of deeds, the good and the bad. If that quarrel can be cut, a great joy that does not tangle is there to be had. The gain is that joy.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a stinging rebuke to sectarian dogmatists and theological disputants who squander their lives in intellectual warfare. He calls them senseless fools (பிரக்ஞைகெட்ட மூடரே) who scream and bicker over abstract doctrines while remaining entirely ignorant of the great, unconflicted Light (பிணங்கிலாத பேரொளி) embodied in their very life-breath (பிராணன்). Humanity remains trapped in the chronic antagonism of dualistic karma—the endless clash of virtuous and sinful deeds (இருவினை)—which perpetuates the wheel of suffering. The poet asserts that if one can sever this fundamental conflict of duality through the unifying practice of inner awareness, all disputation dissolves, bestowing the peerless, unalloyed Bliss (பெரிய இன்பம் / சிவானந்தம்) of non-dual consciousness.
