Four rhyming calls open these lines, and the printed verbs are too compressed to pin to one ordinary action. What sits under them is clear enough. One thing stands as the beginning of every living being. It seized you, kissed you, and let you go. Being born and dying, dying again and again, is how it goes. The singer then stops the riddle and says that what he has made known to you is the truth.
The teaching
Through visceral, rhythmic folk exclamations Sivavakkiyar delivers a startling existential shock to wake humanity from its spiritual slumber. The primordial Reality that stands as the beginning and ground of every living creature is immediate and intimate; it took hold of you, breathed conscious life into your form, and set you in this world. Yet, blinded by worldly illusion, human beings squander their rare incarnation, endlessly dying and being reborn (பிறந்து இறந்து மாண்டு மாண்டு போவது) in a meaningless cycle of suffering. Sivavakkiyar casts aside all polite theological euphemisms, confronting the seeker with the raw urgency of mortality and declaring that awakening to the indwelling Divine is the only absolute, undeniable truth of existence.
