Seeing is treated as a risk. The singer asks what you saw, and says that if you look, the thing perishes along the look. If awareness stays keen, the merest sign is Sivam. Looking and looking, and then stepping past even the gaze, leaves you matched to the opened flower and the unripe fruit, and that match is another birth. The verse wants the sharp sign. The hunting eyes are how birth comes back.

The teaching

A subtle and profound exploration of the hazards of dualistic perception and the path of the pure witness (சாட்சி சைதன்யம்). Sivavakkiyar questions the nature of seeing: what is it that you think you beheld? When one looks with ordinary outward eyes, the object of perception perishes along the gaze, trapped in the mutual illusion of seer and seen. However, if inner awareness remains razor-sharp, subtle, and concentrated (கூர்த்ததாய் இருப்பிரேல்), in that pure sign of inward recognition, Sivam is instantly realized. But if one repeatedly slips back into gazing at external phenomena, becoming entranced by transient forms and stepping away from pure awareness, one becomes bound once again to the natural cycle of the blooming flower and ripening fruit—drawn back into the karmic wheel of physical rebirth.

A blue lamp wanders, taking hold of the forehead. The singer tells you to stand with it, matching devotion to devotion, until the grasp is cut, and he calls that cutting the gain. Then he says to look from up close. There is a light above the inner light. The one who has known the place where the Father sat is the one without beginning. The printed middle of the third line is compressed, so the looking is given in that rough form.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar illuminates the esoteric mystery of the Ajna chakra (நெற்றி) and the vision of the subtle blue flame (நீலமா விளக்கு). At the eyebrow center, the radiant inner lamp of consciousness flickers and wanders. By meeting this subtle light with unwavering devotion and one-pointed meditative focus (பத்தி ஒத்தி நின்று நின்று), the seeker completely severs all worldly attachments (பற்றறுப்பது). Sivavakkiyar urges the practitioner to gaze deeply and intimately: transcending even this luminous inner lamp, there shines a supreme Light beyond all lights The enlightened sage who realizes this transcendent station where the Divine Father abides transcends mortal time, waking up to their own beginningless, eternal nature (அனாதியே).

Verse 165

Pouring water into water is named as the rite you had in mind, a labor that leaves the water unchanged. The singer asks whom you are thinking of while you dump all of it into the pit the line calls அவத்தி. Then the image turns. Think of the root and of the seed-art, and the sprout comes up in the seed. If you can hold that excellence in mind, the states of Siva are within reach.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar takes aim at externalized Vedic water rituals and ceremonial oblations (தர்ப்பணம் / சந்தியாவந்தனம்). Worldly ritualists stand in rivers, repeatedly scooping water with cupped hands only to pour it back into the stream, imagining they are pleasing ancestors or celestial gods. The Siddha bluntly asks: Whom are you actually contemplating while you wastefully splash this water into the void (அவத்திலே இறைக்கிறீர்)? Instead of this futile physical motion, he directs the seeker to an internal meditation: contemplate the primordial Root (வேர் = Muladhara), contemplate the causal Seed (வித்து = Bindu / divine spark), and observe how the glorious sprout of divine consciousness ascends from within. By anchoring the mind in this true internal excellence (சீர்), one effortlessly attains the sacred, immortal states of Shiva (சிவபதங்கள்).

The blue lamp is back, now flickering on the forehead, and the singer tells you to understand it through and look at the radiance that was already inside. People who stay with that in devotion are that supreme itself. The verse ends in a personal claim. The ones who remained in that place are his masters. Where the earlier lamp-song spoke of the beginningless knower, this one bows to the people who stayed.

The teaching

Returning to the radiant vision of the Ajna center, Sivavakkiyar commands the seeker to contemplate the shimmering blue lamp (நீலமாம் விளக்கு) that flickers on the forehead. Rather than being distracted by outer phenomena, the practitioner must pierce through with intuitive understanding (உய்த்துணர்ந்து பாரடா) to behold the supreme Radiance burning within the heart of their own consciousness. Those rare souls who pursue this inner light with unswerving devotion become utterly transmuted, losing their separate ego-identity to merge as the Supreme Reality itself (பரமயம் அதானவர்). Sivavakkiyar reverently humbles himself before these enlightened beings who permanently dwell in that exalted cranial realm, hailing them as his true spiritual Masters (நாதரே).

Three questions strip the story of a life back to the time before it had reasons. Before any conceiving, where did the body stand? Before any taking of form, where did the life-breath stand? Before grace took hold, where did desire stand? A gloss on this song gives திருக்கு as doubt. The last line tells you to cut that doubt and say the name Sivayam. The verse wants the name in place of a map.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar strips away all existential assumptions by posing three primordial questions regarding the pre-cosmic origins of the individual soul. Before the physical embryo was conceived in the mother's womb (கருத்தரிக்கு முன்னெல்லாம்), where did this body abide? Before physical form took shape (உருத்தரிக்கு முன்னெல்லாம்), where was the life-breath (உயிர்ப்பு) stationed? And before divine Grace dawned upon the soul (அருள்தரிக்கு முன்னெல்லாம்), where did the root of desire (ஆசை) dwell? Rather than getting lost in metaphysical speculation, the Siddha commands the seeker to cut through all intellectual doubt, confusion, and mental distortion (திருக்கறுத்துக் கொண்டு) by anchoring entirely in the primordial, beginningless sound: Sivayam (சிவாயம் என்று கூறுவீர்).

Verse 168

  1. 1Karuththarikku munnelaam kaayam ninradhu theeyuvil,
  2. 2Uruththarikku munnelaam kaayamninra theeyuvil
  3. 3Aruldharikku munnelaam aasaininradhu vaayuvil
  4. 4Thirukkaruththuk kondadhee sivaayam enru kuuruviir.

The Project Madurai table prints this gloss beside verse 169. It explains a word in this song:

This verse answers the questions of place. Before conceiving, the body stood in fire. Before the taking of form, the printed line speaks of the body again, standing in that same fire, so the breath asked about before is not given a separate seat here. Before grace, desire stood in air. The close repeats. Cut the doubt, for a gloss on the neighboring line gives திருக்கு as doubt, and say that it is Sivayam.

The teaching

Following the existential inquiries of the previous verse, Sivavakkiyar provides the esoteric Siddha cosmological answer. Before conception in the womb, the subtle potential of the body resided in the cosmic element of Fire (தேயு)—the primordial heat of karmic manifestation. Before tangible form crystallized, the embryonic essence was sustained within that same fiery matrix; and before grace descended to liberate the soul, latent desire and karmic vasanas were suspended in the subtle element of Air (வாயு / cosmic breath). The physical body and psychological cravings are thus condensed transformations of cosmic elements. Sivavakkiyar urges the seeker to sever all lingering doubts and conceptual entanglements (திருக்கு அறுத்து), realizing that both the macrocosm and microcosm originate from and dissolve into the five-lettered sacred matrix: Sivayam.
