Seeing is treated as a risk. The singer asks what you saw, and says that if you look, the thing perishes along the look. If awareness stays keen, the merest sign is Sivam. Looking and looking, and then stepping past even the gaze, leaves you matched to the opened flower and the unripe fruit, and that match is another birth. The verse wants the sharp sign. The hunting eyes are how birth comes back.
The teaching
A subtle and profound exploration of the hazards of dualistic perception and the path of the pure witness (சாட்சி சைதன்யம்). Sivavakkiyar questions the nature of seeing: what is it that you think you beheld? When one looks with ordinary outward eyes, the object of perception perishes along the gaze, trapped in the mutual illusion of seer and seen. However, if inner awareness remains razor-sharp, subtle, and concentrated (கூர்த்ததாய் இருப்பிரேல்), in that pure sign of inward recognition, Sivam is instantly realized. But if one repeatedly slips back into gazing at external phenomena, becoming entranced by transient forms and stepping away from pure awareness, one becomes bound once again to the natural cycle of the blooming flower and ripening fruit—drawn back into the karmic wheel of physical rebirth.
