Temple and school are asked what they are. The mark that stands fixed is asked what it is. Mantras recited with the mouth, while one stands worshipping, are asked what they are. The turn is practical. If you bow in the right way in the school of knowledge, you may see God in the school of the body. The body is the school that can hold the sight. Mouth-mantras and temple buildings are the things put in question.

The teaching

One of Sivavakkiyar's most famous iconoclastic verses, radically redefining both the temple and the true seat of learning. What are external stone temples and religious schools What is the use of sectarian bodily marks? What is the value of mechanically muttering mantras with the mouth? The Siddha redirects the seeker to the authentic sanctuary: if you truly humble yourself and worship with sincerity in the school of intuitive Wisdom (ஞானமான பள்ளி), then right here inside the school of the living human body (காயமான பள்ளி), you will directly behold the Supreme Lord! The physical body is not an impure cage to be despised, nor are external stone structures the dwelling of God; the living body itself is the sacred sanctum where the Divine is directly encountered.

Metals are given numbers, as in a furnace count. Good silver is six, desired copper is four, the lead that kills is three, and the red gold that roams is two. With them is the one sound of the bow. If you can blow so that the work shines, you may turn, eightfold, the radiant one who matches the limit. Breath is the blowing. The metals are the inner work, spoken as a count down toward that light.

The teaching

Siddha spiritual alchemy (ரசவாதம்) and Vasi yoga veiled in metallurgical numerology. The metals represent progressive stages of internal transmutation: silver is six (the six chakras / lunar channels), copper is four (the four antahkaranas), killing lead/zinc is three (the three gunas / malas), and pure gold is two (the twin breaths of Prana and Apana, or Shiva-Shakti). When united with the singular twang of the mystic bow (வில்லின் ஓசை = the Pranava Omkara resonating at the eyebrow center), and blown intensely with the bellows of Vasi breath (விளங்க ஊத வல்லீரேல்), the base metal of mortal consciousness is sublimated. The yogi attains the boundless, supreme Radiance (எல்லை ஒத்த சோதியான்) and achieves the eightfold alchemical transmutation into pure divine consciousness.

Verse 186

  1. 1மனத்தகத்து அழுக்கறாத மவுனஞான யோகிகள்;
  2. 2வனத்தகத்து இருக்கினும் மனத்தகத்து அழுக்கறார்;
  1. 1Manaththagaththu azhukkaraadha mavunagnaana yogigal;
  2. 2Vanaththagaththu irukkinum manaththagaththu azhukkaraar;
  3. 3Manaththagaththu azhukkaruththa mavinagnaana yogigal
  4. 4Pinaththadaththu irukkinum pirapparuththu irupparee!

Silent-knowledge yogis whose dirt in the mind has not left are told the truth about the forest. They may live there, and the dirt in the mind still does not leave. A second kind of yogi is named with the printed word மவின, which is not the same as the silence of the first line, and its exact sense stays uncertain. Those who have cut the dirt of the mind have cut birth, even if they sit in the place of a corpse.

The teaching

A powerful contrast between external ascetic withdrawal and internal psychological purification. If the inner defilements of the mind—lust, greed, anger, and ego (மனத்தகத்து அழுக்கு)—remain unpurged, so-called yogis who observe vows of silence (மவுன ஞான யோகிகள்) will never be cleansed, even if they flee to the isolation of deep mountain forests (வனத்தகத்து இருக்கினும்). Physical geography cannot erase psychological impurity. Conversely, the true silent Jnanis who have thoroughly severed and dissolved mental impurities within their own awareness (மனத்தகத்து அழுக்கு அறுத்த) have permanently cut off the cycle of birth and death (பிறப்பறுத்து இருப்பரே). Even if such an enlightened Siddha resides in a repulsive cremation ground surrounded by rotting corpses (பிணத்தடம்), they remain forever immaculate, liberated, and untouched by samsara.

Verse 187

  1. 1Uruvumalla oliyum alla onradhaagi ninradhee
  2. 2Maruvumalla kandhamalla mandhanaadi utradhalla

  4. 4Ariyadhaaga ninraneermai yaavargaana valliree.

A string of refusals tries to clear a space. It is not form and not light, and it stands as one. It is not a stain and not a smell, and it is not something that happened to the slow channel. It is not large and not small, and it is not itself the speaking breath. What remains is a straightness that stands as the rare thing. The last line asks who is able to see it. The negations are the approach. The dare is the sight.

The teaching

A relentless Neti-Neti (not this, not that) deconstruction of the Ultimate Reality. The Supreme is neither physical form (உருவம்) nor perceptible light (ஒளி), yet it stands as undivided, non-dual Oneness (ஒன்றதாகி நின்றதே). It is neither a stain nor a fragrance; it is not an event bound to the slow, sluggish nadi channels; it is neither macrocosmic magnitude (பெரியதல்ல) nor microcosmic minuteness (சிறியதல்ல); it is not even the embodied, talking individual soul / breath (பேசும் ஆவி தானும் அல்ல). Sivavakkiyar asks with mystical awe: who has the rare, refined intuitive vision to perceive this peerless, unconditioned, straight Truth To realize the Divine, one must transcend all physical attributes, mental categories, and subtle energetic states, resting in the pure transcendent Void.

Verse 188

  1. 1Orezhuththu ulagelaam udhiththa atsaraththulee
  2. 2Iirezhuththu iyambuginra inpameedhu arigiliir
  3. 3Muuvezhuththu muuvaraay muundezhundha muurththiyai
  4. 4Naalezhuththu naavilee navinradhee sivaayamee.

Letters are counted up from one to four. In the one letter, inside the syllable from which the whole world arose, you still do not know the joy that the two letters utter. The three letters rose as the three, one form. What the tongue recited as the four letters is Sivayam. The verse climbs the count and lands the fourfold recitation on that name. It does not stop to spell the letters out.

The teaching

The ascending progression of cosmic sound and mantra theology. From the single primordial letter (ஓரெழுத்து = the Pranava Omkara), the entire cosmos emanated. Trapped in external distractions, human beings remain completely ignorant of the supreme, unitive bliss uttered by the two letters (ஈரெழுத்து = 'Si-Va', the union of Shiva and Shakti). The three letters (மூவெழுத்து = A-U-M / the Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra) manifested as the cosmic triad from a single supreme Form. And what the tongue continuously chants as the sacred four letters is none other than Sivayam Sivavakkiyar reveals that from the singular seed of cosmic sound to the manifestation of deities and languages, everything is crowned and perfected in the liberating vibration of Sivayam.

Verse 189

  1. 1Aadhiandha muulavindhu naadhamaindhu puudhamaay
  2. 2Aadhiandha muulavindhu naadhamain thezhuththumaay
  3. 3Aadhiandha muulavindhu naadhammeevi ninradhum
  4. 4Aadhiandha muulavindhu naadhamee sivaayamee.

The same four terms are sung four times: beginning, end, the root-bindu, and nada. First they stand as the five elements. Then they stand as the five letters. Then they are what abides, pervading. Last, the nada among them is Sivayam. Repetition does the work of an argument. Each return keeps the terms and changes what they are said to be, until sound and the name are one.

The teaching

A rhythmic, incantatory litany establishing Nada and Bindu as the foundation of all reality. The beginning and end of all things (ஆதி அந்தம்), the primordial causal seed (மூல விந்து / Bindu), and the unstruck cosmic vibration (நாதம் / Nada) manifested first as the five gross elements (பஞ்ச பூதங்கள்: earth, water, fire, air, space). That very same beginningless Nada-Bindu matrix crystallized as the sacred Five Letters (ஐந்தெழுத்து / Panchakshara). It is that same Nada-Bindu that permeates and sustains every pore of creation; and in the supreme mystical culmination, Sivavakkiyar reveals that this beginningless, endless Nada-Bindu IS nothing other than Sivayam! Sound, cosmos, elements, and divine consciousness are one unbroken, radiant continuum.
