Numbers arrive in a rush: three and thirty, with six, three and three, then three liberations and threes until the line is all mystery. A light appears, spoken of as three mothers and as a lamp without glare. The last line is compressed at the start. It most naturally says our Lord entered inside the tongue, and asks what form that entering has. The surface is a count of letters and states. The subject is the one who got into speech.

The teaching

A rhythmic, mystical synthesis of Saiva Siddhanta cosmology and internal divine speech. The thirty-six fundamental principles of reality (tattvas) replicated across the three cosmic planes, the classic Trinity of creator, preserver, and dissolver, the nine stages of spiritual fruition, and the three primordial Mother-powers (Iccha, Kriya, and Jnana Shaktis) all unite as a single, indivisible flame of consciousness (சுடர்). Sivavakkiyar reveals that this entire vast architecture of cosmos and scripture finds its living culmination when our peerless Lord takes up residence within the seeker's own speech. When the divine enters the tongue, the adept's mortal voice is transformed into the direct, unmediated utterance of eternal Truth.

Verse 267

Five and five and five: the number can mean elements, senses, and sheaths, and the line does not pause to label them. That fivefold one also becomes what the fives are not. Five and three become one, the primal God who stood. You stood established as all of this. Who is able to see you, you who became five and five? The count is the hiding. Sight would have to see through it to the one who wears it.

The teaching

A meditation on the divine immanence and radical transcendence of the Supreme Lord through the science of tattvas. The cosmos is woven of fives: the five gross elements, the five subtle senses, the five organs of perception, and the five sheaths of the body The Divine pervades every single particle of these fivefold structures, yet remains entirely beyond them (அல்லவற்றுள் ஆயுமாய்). The eightfold constituents of nature (the five elements plus mind, intellect, and ego) resolve into the unified presence of the Primal God (ஆதி தேவன்). Sivavakkiyar asks with profound reverence: when the Lord conceals His infinite splendor behind this dense cosmic tapestry of fivefold matter, who among sense-bound mortals possesses the subtle vision to pierce the veil and behold Him as He truly is?

Verse 268

Six and six and six, then five and five and five, then the bull's excellence, two and three, seven and six and eight. The numbers are recited and left unsolved. They become knowledge of separate kinds, joined to the true and to the false together. Seated in the midst is a sound that wells up, addressed as mystery itself. The verse keeps no tidy chart. Truth and falsehood both enter this knowledge, and its person is the rising sound.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar gathers the dizzying enumerations of cosmic and physiological categories—the six chakras, six philosophies, six seasons; the five elements and senses; the nadis, tastes, and spiritual arts—and reveals their singular inner source. While scholastic intellectuals fragment these numbers into rival philosophies, dialectics, and dogmatic truths mixed with untruths (மெய்யினோடு பொய்யுமாய்), the Supreme Enchanter (மாயன்) sits enthroned at the very core of being as the ever-welling unstruck sound (ஊறும் ஓசை / Nada). The ultimate truth is not found in cataloging categories, but in attuning awareness to that living, subterranean river of soundless resonance vibrating eternally within the spiritual heart.

Verse 269

  1. 1Ettum ettum ettumaay oreezhum eezhumaay

  4. 4Ettezhuththum odhuvaargal allalniingi nirparee.

Eight and eight and eight, then seven and seven, then eight and one and three: the count keeps changing, and the one inside it is the primal God. Bowing is tied to feet that are eight, and the manner of standing bowed is the picture. Those who recite the eight letters stand clear of suffering. The line never spells those eight letters. Set against the pile of numbers, that recitation is what loosens pain.

The teaching

Cosmic numerology is synthesized into the liberating power of the sacred Eight Letters (Ashtakshara / ஓம் நமோ நாராயணாய / the esoteric Siddha synthesis of Shiva and Vishnu). The Divine manifests through the eight directions, the eightfold subtle body, the eight forms of nature (Ashtamurti), and the cosmic order. When the seeker surrenders egoic will and bows before the boundless feet of the Primal God, meditating inwardly upon the mystic Eight Letters, the entire knot of existential suffering and karmic grief (அல்லல்) is instantly dissolved. Sivavakkiyar shows that authentic surrender transcends dry metaphysical arithmetic, bringing immediate release from the anguish of mortal existence.

Verse 270

  4. 4Paththargat kalaadhumuththi muththi muththi yaagumee.

Ten with ten, and seven with nine, open another count. Then comes a land that stood inside the ten and four directions, and the good of gaining that land. A cluster of ten is added. The place that follows is compressed in the print, something like that spot and a great beginning. For devotees the close piles liberation on liberation. One phrase there is uncertain and may set this liberation apart from mere learning, or it may simply press the word three times. The song counts the devotee into release.

The teaching

The complex counts of subtle physiology—the ten vital winds (vayus), ten cranial nadis, and bodily apertures—govern mortal life within the fourteen directions of the cosmos. Trapped within these dense clusters of physical attachments and karmic knots, humanity struggles in vain to attain freedom through intellectual cleverness or ceremonial pride. Sivavakkiyar proclaims with resounding finality: true, irrevocable liberation (முத்தி முத்தி முத்தி) cannot be purchased through ritual bargaining or dry scholarship. It is bestowed solely upon sincere devotees (பத்தர்கள்) who melt in unconditional devotion and surrender to the Beginningless Supreme Lord (ஆதி மால்).

Breath comes first. Become the moving breath, make love one, and say what came and stood in the way. The day roams as love, among faults that have good mixed in. The next line is compressed: a shoulder lifted and waving, an anklet, and a you who made that something into nothing. Desire stays, and must be remembered. From that, becoming deathless is said to arrive. Yoga, fault, and longing stay knotted in the print.

The teaching

An exalted proclamation of the Siddha path to immortality through Vasi yoga and supreme love. When the vital breath (வாசி) is regulated and fused with undivided divine love (நேசம் ஒன்றி), what karmic adversary or existential obstacle can dare oppose the practitioner? As the sanctified breath circulates harmoniously through the body, it burns away both worldly merits and accumulated sins, shattering the haughty ego and the boastful swagger of physical pride. By tethering the heart in unceasing yearning to the ankleted feet of the Divine, the yogi transcends physical decay and mortal vulnerability, awakening directly into the deathless, immortal state of the Siddhas
