The questions are thrown like insults. What is the fire-pit you laid? What is the Rig Veda? What are the threads wound in a pot of baked clay? Then the verse points at a light that sprouted in a pillar standing jammed in the way, and asks what it is that keeps hold of that light. The address lands on titled scholars of the Nada. Outer tools are being weighed against an inner flame.
The teaching
In one of his most fiercely confrontational verses, Sivavakkiyar demolishes the pretensions of orthodox Vedic ritualism. Addressing the titled ritualist and scholar (பட்டநாத பட்டர்), he mocks the paraphernalia of external sacrifice: the carefully dug fire-pits (குண்டம்), the mechanical recitation of the Rig Veda, and the sacred threads draped over baked clay ritual pots. Sivavakkiyar points directly to the only altar that matters: the central spinal column (முட்டி நின்ற தூண் / Sushumna), within which the fiery light of Kundalini sprouts and ascends to illuminate consciousness. He taunts the priest: while you are obsessively occupied with dead ashes and clay jars, do you possess the slightest experiential knowledge of that inner fire, or what transcendent awareness holds it?
