The count is spoken again, now from the fine toward the gross, and the one who sat through it is named Nada. One in the inner sky, two in the moving wind, three in the red flame, four in excellent water, five on the fivefold earth. Then the same kind of question returns. The maya that grew clear in the mind — who is able to see it? Clearing is not the same as having a spectator.

The teaching

Tracing the cosmogenic unfolding from the subtle ether down to gross earth, Sivavakkiyar reveals the omnipresence of the Supreme Lord (நாதன்). God is the singular vibration of space, the dual nature of the moving breath, the threefold flame of digestive and yogic fire, the fourfold fluid of vitality, and the fivefold solidity of the physical body. When the mind pierces through the hypnotic veil of cosmic illusion (மாயை) and stabilizes in pristine stillness, it recognizes that the universe is not an obstacle to spiritual attainment, but the living body of the Lord Himself. Yet rare is the enlightened soul who possesses the inner clarity to perceive this truth beyond the distorting prism of sensory delusion.

The advice is plain and hard. If you can remain attentive once the mind's disturbance is gone, a jewel-lamp that has no thought will stand as the eternal. The Veda everyone recites is then suspected of babbling inside. Against that noise the verse sets two claims: what was seen as a dream is the truth, and what you have clarified is Sivayam.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar cuts to the core of Advaitic self-realization and mental quietude. Spiritual liberation does not lie in loud, ostentatious recitations of the Vedas, which often amount to nothing more than internal egoic babble and pride. If a seeker can purge the mind of its restless distortions, cravings, and dualistic agitations (மனவிகாரம் அற்று), a thought-free jewel-lamp of pure awareness (நினைவிலாத மணிவிளக்கு) shines forth effortlessly and perpetually. In that profound stillness beyond conceptual thought, the waking world is recognized as ephemeral as a fleeting dream, and the crystal-clear, unshakeable truth that remains standing is the non-dual reality of Sivaya(ma).

The questions are thrown like insults. What is the fire-pit you laid? What is the Rig Veda? What are the threads wound in a pot of baked clay? Then the verse points at a light that sprouted in a pillar standing jammed in the way, and asks what it is that keeps hold of that light. The address lands on titled scholars of the Nada. Outer tools are being weighed against an inner flame.

The teaching

In one of his most fiercely confrontational verses, Sivavakkiyar demolishes the pretensions of orthodox Vedic ritualism. Addressing the titled ritualist and scholar (பட்டநாத பட்டர்), he mocks the paraphernalia of external sacrifice: the carefully dug fire-pits (குண்டம்), the mechanical recitation of the Rig Veda, and the sacred threads draped over baked clay ritual pots. Sivavakkiyar points directly to the only altar that matters: the central spinal column (முட்டி நின்ற தூண் / Sushumna), within which the fiery light of Kundalini sprouts and ascends to illuminate consciousness. He taunts the priest: while you are obsessively occupied with dead ashes and clay jars, do you possess the slightest experiential knowledge of that inner fire, or what transcendent awareness holds it?

Verse 313

A single lotus leaf, sprung in the water, is allowed to touch the water and still not be the water. That picture is carried over to the earth. The supreme the learned speak of has sprouted here, among us. The verse asks you to stay and look at the character of standing joined with the earth. Nearness without soaking is the whole teaching.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar employs the classical Siddha metaphor of the lotus leaf (தாமரை இலை) to elucidate the state of Jivanmukti—living liberation within the physical world. A lotus leaf originates in muddy water and remains submerged in its current, yet water drops roll off its surface without ever soaking it. In the same way, the Supreme Reality (பராபரம்) has manifested within this earthly existence and embodied itself in the human form. The enlightened seeker does not need to abandon the world or flee into desolate caves; rather, they must master the sublime art of living in the world without being of the world—engaging in bodily life with full awareness while remaining entirely untainted by worldly attachments and karmic entanglements.

Verse 314

The speaker reports a state that fits none of the usual rooms. He is not in sleep, not in waking, and awareness has not gone off and shrunk. He then asks whether the five senses and the directions have become one, and how outside and inside ever fitted together as a body. The knowers who remain full, the verse says, think of nothing at all. Fullness here is the end of thinking.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar describes the transcendent state of Turiya and Turiyatita, where all conventional distinctions between waking, dreaming, and deep sleep dissolve into unbroken awareness. For the fully realized sage (நிறைந்திருந்த ஞானி), it is utterly inconsequential whether the physical body is awake, asleep, or in deep yogic trance (சமாதி), or whether the senses interact with the external world. The false dualism between 'internal' and 'external' has collapsed into a single, seamless continuum of pure being. Abiding in this infinite fullness, the sage has transcended memory, desire, and intellectual ideation; having become the living Reality, they abide in effortless, thought-free stillness (நினைப்பது ஏதுமில்லை).

Verse 315

Recitation is collapsed into a single letter, and that letter is the One. It proclaims itself as the body called the Veda, and it is not something else. Nada is one. The four-faced one, Mal, and the singer are one. The verse ends on the rightness of having known the one that stands with nothing beside it. Identity is stated, not argued.

The teaching

A stunning declaration of radical Advaitic non-duality and sound mysticism (Nada Yoga). Sivavakkiyar reveals that the ultimate essence chanted by true seers is the single imperishable letter (ஓர் எழுத்து)—the Pranava. This primal vibration is not an external mythological scripture; it is the living cosmic reality embodying all truth. In this transcendent realization, all theological hierarchies and dualistic separations vanish into thin air: the primordial sound-current (நாதம்), the Creator Brahma (நான்முகன்), the Preserver Vishnu (மால்), and the individual self (நான்) are discovered to be indivisibly One. Sivavakkiyar celebrates the supreme integrity of this awakening: directly knowing the Absolute which stands without a second, utterly self-sufficient and free from all external props.
