The title knower is now thrown back at the crowd. Dogs, crores of them, say jñāni, jñāni. Disputants, crores of them, speak of a rainy day that has no sky. Fools do not see the nature of an ocean that has no place. The last line is compressed. Without the sign the print calls மூன், crores say that this is what was known before. Saying the title is the opposite of the seeing the previous verse required.

The teaching

Following his description of the true sage, Sivavakkiyar unleashes scathing contempt against the rampant pretenders of spirituality. He compares the legions of self-proclaimed enlightened masters to barking dogs (நாய்கள் கோடிகோடியே) who mouth the sacred word 'Jnani' without a shred of experiential realization. These sectarian disputants are as absurd as fools describing torrential rain falling from a non-existent sky. Completely blind to the shoreless, spaceless ocean of pure consciousness (தானிலா சாகரம்), these ignorant charlatans lack the foundational three-fold inner realization (the balance of breath, mind, and Kundalini), yet boast arrogantly that they have already mastered the primordial mysteries. Sivavakkiyar warns seekers against mistaking these noisy, superficial pretenders for authentic knowers of the divine.

Sivayam is placed, not defined. On the subtle horn, in the flame at the whirl's tip, in a blown flower, at the door where the broad one rests, on the horn of shyness, in the temple where he dwelt, on the island that is initiation. What excelled in all those places is Sivayam. The verse is a tour of inner sites, and every site gives the same name.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar guides the seeker on an internal pilgrimage through the sacred geography of the subtle body. God does not dwell in stone temples fashioned by human hands, but atop the subtle cranial horn (சூட்சமான கொம்பு) and within the blazing flame of the Sushumna vortex (சுழிமுனைச் சுடர்). There, consciousness unfolds like a celestial flower, revealing the vast portal through which cosmic energy flows. In that sacred, delicate temple within the crown of the head, the indwelling Lord makes His eternal abode. This inner summit is the true island of divine initiation (தீட்சையான தீவு)—a realm where external rituals fall away and the radiant, liberating reality of Sivaya(ma) reveals its boundless supremacy.

Verse 339

  1. 1Pongininra monamum podhindhuninra monamum
  2. 2Thangininra monamum thayangininra monamum
  3. 3Kangaiyaana monamum kadhiththuninra monamum
  4. 4Thingalaana monamum sivanirundha monamee.

Silence is counted in kinds, and the last kind gathers the rest. Silence that surged. Silence packed tight. Silence that settled. Silence that wavered. Silence that is the Ganga. Silence that stood as a ray. Silence that is the moon. Then the line stops. All of these are the silence in which Siva abode. The verse does not ask you to pick one silence. It says he stayed in the silence they are.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a sublime symphony on the multiple dimensions of Mouna (மோனம் / mystical Silence). Silence is not merely the passive absence of speech; it is the dynamic, multifaceted texture of divine consciousness. There is the silence that surges with ecstatic pranic energy, the silence concentrated deep within the heart, the silence settled in absolute immobility, and the silence shimmering with sacred wonder. It flows as the celestial river of cranial ambrosia (கங்கையான மோனம்), radiates as the blazing ray of gnosis, and soothes the soul like the nectarine inner moon (திங்களான மோனம்). In this magnificent realization, Sivavakkiyar reveals that Shiva is not a dogma, an idol, or a concept, but the living, all-encompassing Silence in which the entire cosmos rests.

Verse 340

  1. 1Monamaana viidhiyil munaichchuzhiyin vaalaiyil
  2. 2Paanamaana viidhiyil pasaindhasegn sudarinil
  3. 3Gnaanamaana muulaiyil naralaidhangum vaayilil,
  4. 4Onamaana senjudar udhiththadhee sivaayamee.

The silences of the previous verse become streets, tails, and doors, and a red flame rises there. On the street of silence, on the tail of the tip-whirl. On the street that is a drink, in the red flame that clung. In the corner of knowledge, at the door where the hum rests. The red flame of union that arose is Sivayam. Place after place, the same arising.

The teaching

Continuing his inner itinerary of awakening, Sivavakkiyar describes the ascent of the yogic flame through the pathways of the subtle organism. Traveling along the grand avenue of silence (மோனமான வீதி), the energy tapers into the delicate, fiery tail of Kundalini (வாலை) at the apex of the Sushumna vortex. Along this path flows the sweet ambrosial nectar of spiritual intoxication (பானமான வீதி), feeding the crimson flame of yogic fire. In the innermost sanctuary of transcendent wisdom and at the threshold where the oceanic roar of Nada reverberates (நரலை தங்கும் வாயில்), the radiant flame of realization bursts forth. This self-luminous crimson light, awakening the practitioner to immortality, is the living presence of Sivaya(ma).

Verse 341

  1. 1Udhiththezhundha vaalaiyum uyangininra vaalaiyum
  2. 2Kadhiththezhundha vaalaiyum kaalaiyaana vaalaiyum
  3. 3Madhiththezhundha vaalaiyum maraindhuninra gnaanamum
  4. 4Kodhiththezhundhu kumbalaagi kuuvumgiiyum aanadhee.

Tails are listed the way silences were listed. A tail that sprang up, a tail that drooped, a tail that rose as a ray, a tail that has become morning, a tail that rose under regard, and knowledge that stood hidden. Then the list boils. Rising in a boil, becoming a pot, it turned into the call and the cry. Many ends of the flame gather into the two sounds.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar invokes the esoteric Siddha archetype of Balai (வாலை / Bala Tripura Sundari)—the virgin power of Kundalini-Shakti that resides as a subtle flame within the human body. He traces her multifaceted manifestations: sprouting from the base, standing languid in dormant potential, blazing forth like solar rays, and dawning like morning light across the inner horizon. When the practitioner gathers and boils this spiritual energy through focused contemplation and yogic breath retention (கும்பகம்), the hidden treasure of divine wisdom is unlocked. In this intense internal crucible, all diverse currents of Shakti coalesce into the primordial sonic vibrations of respiration and cosmic sound ('கூ' and 'கீ'), uniting energy and consciousness in a single pulse.

Verse 342

  1. 1Kuuvumgiiyum monamaagi kolgaiyaana kolgaiyai
  2. 2Muuvilee udhiththezhundha muchchudar virivilee
  3. 3Puuvilee naraigalpolap porundhininra puuranam
  4. 4Aavi aavi aavi aavi anparullam utradhee.

Call and cry become a silence, and that silence takes over the doctrine of doctrines. In the three, three flames rise and spread. Fullness stands there the way honey stands in a flower, joined and sweet. Then life is said four times, and the verse grows tender. That life has reached the hearts of those who love. After so many subtleties, the arrival is in the lover's chest.

The teaching

In this exquisite, deeply moving verse, Sivavakkiyar seamlessly bridges the esoteric rigor of Vasi yoga with the tender warmth of pure devotion (அன்பு). When the inward and outward pranic sounds ('கூ' and 'கீ') dissolve into profound, wordless silence, the seeker grasps the supreme doctrine beyond all scriptures. As the three inner lights (sun, moon, and fire) harmonize and expand, the divine Fullness (பூரணம்) permeates the soul just as natural fragrance and sweet honey invisibly saturate a flower. This supreme life-force (ஆவி)—the very breath of the cosmos—is not an abstract philosophical concept; it finds its true, ecstatic dwelling place in the tender, receptive hearts of those who love with unreserved devotion.
