Silence is counted in kinds: the silence of Mal as he comes to rest, the silence where Hara sits, the silence of elements being brought to readiness, the silence that has been worn, the speed held in the blink, and the shining silence at the crown. The list is a map of stillness through god, element, eye, and head. Then the line turns on the people who know themselves. Their knowledge shows in this: they do not keep their gaze fixed on the corpse.
The teaching
Sivavakkiyar employs classic agricultural and Advaitic imagery to describe radical spiritual purification. Just as a diligent farmer painstakingly weeds out invasive tares from a flourishing crop to ensure an abundant harvest, the Siddha systematically purges the seven illusory bodily constituents (dhatus) and karmic modifications that choke the soul. He invokes the celebrated metaphor of the rope and the snake: cosmic illusion (மாயை) possesses no independent reality, appearing real only through ignorance like a snake perceived in a coiled piece of rope. Severing this phantom snare as decisively and effortlessly as slicing a single strand of hair, all false dualities, egoic claims, and mortal fears perish, leaving only the pristine, self-luminous reality of Sivayanama.
