The people addressed have learned mantras and are lost in them. The singer asks whether, at the time of death, they will still be able to say those mantras. The mantras are inside them, and they themselves, who prized the mantras, are inside as well. What a mantra actually comes to is the five letters of the mind. Learning stored in the mouth is measured against a death in which the mouth stops, and against letters that live in the mind.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar establishes the seamless correspondence between the macrocosm (அண்டம்) and the human microcosm (பிண்டம்). The vast universe is continuously animated by the beginningless Source (அனாதியான மூலம்), just as the physical body is sustained by the subtle resonance of the singular vital breath (பிராணன் / Vasi). The throat center (கண்டம் / Vishuddhi) vibrates with unstruck sound; but once the yogi penetrates beyond it to discover the celestial mansion of the cranium (கபால வீடு / Sahasrara), the upward journey through the spinal column (தண்டம் / Merudanda / Sushumna) reaches its divine culmination (சமைந்தது). All cosmic structures, bodily conduits, and mental efforts dissolve into the living, self-existent realization of Sivayanama.

Past the three sides, the line enters the deed of the three-eyed one. Inside the consciousness-supreme, a rising flood is Sivayam, and Sivayam is the five letters. After the self-supreme has risen and become the pillar everywhere, this side shrinks and runs, and what it becomes is the linga everywhere. The letters, the pillar, and the mark are one spreading. The question about shrinking answers itself in the same line.

The teaching

Transcending the three cities (முப்புரம்)—symbolizing the three gunas, the three states of consciousness (waking, dream, deep sleep), and the three bodies (gross, subtle, causal)—the practitioner enters the realm of the Three-Eyed Lord (முக்கண்ணன் / Shiva), who annihilates all illusion. Within the supreme space of pure consciousness (சிற்பரம்), the sacred Five Letters (Sivayanama) spring forth as an inexhaustible, surging fountain of divine life. When the transcendent Self (தற்பரம்) dawns, it stands as the immovable, cosmic Pillar of Light (தாணு / Lingodbhava) sustaining all existence. All external distractions and dualities collapse on this earthly plane, leaving only the omnipresent Linga of pure Being filling the entire cosmos.

Verse 378

  4. 4Viidugandu vindidini vettaveliyum aanadhee.

The life that stands dancing is questioned, piece by piece. Is it one five, the five elements? Is it the light that stands joined, or the root that stands sporting? Did it stand because it had seen a country, or is it the learning a tongue studied? The questions are a strip-search of the usual answers. If the house is seen and then left, that life has become the bare open as well.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar subjects the nature of the embodied soul (சீவன்) to radical spiritual inquiry, systematically stripping away false identities. Is this dancing life-principle merely a composite of the five material elements? Is it a congregated light, or the primordial root sporting in matter? Did it attain reality by travelling to distant lands and holy pilgrimage shrines, or is it merely the scholastic book-learning repeated by the tongue? Decisively dismantling all physical, geographical, and dogmatic definitions, the poet reveals that once the soul discovers its true spiritual abode (வீடு) and renounces all attachments, it directly becomes the vast, limitless, unconditioned Open Space (வெட்டவெளி)—the absolute Void of pure awareness.

When the life takes a form, a truth stands level with it. In anything that has rightness in it, that truth is Sivayam, the five letters. After a firm standing, a pressing, a subsiding, and a becoming of the one enjoyment, what rises from thought is the lord who carries the skull. The skull-bearer is placed at the end of an inward sequence, so the figure comes up out of the mind's own movement.

The teaching

From the very moment the soul assumed physical embodiment, an immutable Truth stood co-present with it. In everything that possesses genuine righteousness, harmony, and perfection, that living Truth is nothing other than Sivayam—the sacred Five Letters. By establishing the body in firm posture, subduing the wandering senses, and merging all dualities into the singular enjoyment of non-dual oneness (ஏகபோகம்), the seeker touches the transcendent. Out of the deepest sanctum of this purified consciousness (கருத்து), the supreme Lord who bears the skull (கபாலம் ஏந்தும் நாதன் / Bhairava)—the fierce destroyer of ego and mortal limitation—emerges to confer absolute liberation.

Verse 380

The same moment is said four times: when conception arose. In that moment it became the lotus seat. In that moment it became the causes. In that moment, look, it stood as the two eyes. And what arose from thought is again the lord who carries the skull. Seat, cause, eyes, and the skull-bearer are one birth from the mind. The repetition refuses to let them be four separate events.

The teaching

When divine consciousness first stirs and takes conception in embodiment, it manifests as the sacred lotus throne (கமலபீடம்)—the subtle chakra pedestal of the heart and crown. In that same creative emergence, it unfolds as the underlying metaphysical causes (காரணங்கள்) governing phenomenal existence. Look closely: it takes form as the twin perceptual eyes of the body, and esoterically as the inner solar and lunar channels (Pingala and Ida). Yet all these manifestations—lotus seats, cosmic causes, and physical organs—arise from the movement of thought and awareness. At the culmination of spiritual awakening, the skull-bearing Lord Himself rises from the purified mind, demonstrating that God is not an external ruler, but the innermost essence of one's own consciousness.

Fire, a three-cornered figure, and the numbers six, two, and eight are set down together. The life that came to be, the five letters, and a blooming after the letter a was placed come next. Then the truth of the light that came to be, and the truth that has no beginning. The close is a hiding: as what it became, as itself, and as distress, it disappears. Even the beginningless truth is said to vanish by turning into misery.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar weaves esoteric yantra geometry and Siddha numerology into a profound meditation on the concealment and revelation of Truth. He invokes the fire triangle (முக்கோணம் / Muladhara or Yoni yantra) and the subtle governing principles of six chakras, two nadis, and the eightfold subtle body (ஆறிரண்டு எட்டு). The embodied soul blossoms into its divine potential through the Five Sacred Letters (அஞ்செழுத்து) when vitalized by the primal seed-sound 'A' (அகாரம்). Both the manifest light and the beginningless unmanifest truth are present here. Yet when consciousness identifies with the egoic self (தானதாய்) and becomes ensnared in worldly desires, the divine reality appears to conceal itself in existential misery (அவலம்). Transcending egoic identity alone unveils the eternal truth.
