Oil already sits inside the sesame seed, and in that same way the Lord is already within, spread through every place. The fools addressed here still swing and sway, as if he were elsewhere. The test that follows is domestic and hard. A snatching dog's tail keeps its crook; if that nature can be spoiled, the generous light can be seen, and that seeing is called the truth. Sight is tied to a changed habit, not to a new opinion about God.
The teaching
Using the classic Indian philosophical metaphor of oil invisibly pervading every grain of sesame (எள்ளகத்தில் எண்ணெய்), Sivavakkiyar affirms that the Supreme Lord is utterly omnipresent, intimately seated within the sanctum of the human heart. Yet foolish seekers swing back and forth like agitated pendulums, endlessly running to distant pilgrimage sites and temples while ignoring the indwelling presence. To diagnose their spiritual blindness, the Siddha uses a rustic folk image: the proverbial crooked tail of a scavenging dog. The crooked tail symbolizes the incorrigible, grasping mind and the deep-seated vasanas (habitual tendencies) that perpetually bend consciousness toward external duality and worldly craving. Only if a seeker can break and eradicate this stubborn, crooked nature of the mind will the boundless, self-giving Light of Divine Grace (வள்ளலாகி நின்ற சோதி) spontaneously shine forth as the ultimate Reality.
